How Much of the Severity was Personal between Goodell and SP? (1 Viewer)

Of course it's personal. Goodell said as much.
Payton didn't want to disclose that his team was still using the 'bragging rights' program to motivate his team.

Goodell is sore that he was lied to about the matter. Roger is using Sean to show everyone that NO ONE lies to him!

Roger loves New Orleans.

I agree. We may never "know" how much, but past actions indicate he doesn't take being lied to lightly, just ask Mike Vick. IIRC, he flat-out stated that if Vick had been truthful from the beginning on the dog-fighting issue, the suspension would have been lighter.

I think ANYONE takes being lied to personally. If I lied to my mom about something as a kid about something I was potentially in trouble for, the punishment was way worse than what it would have been should I have been truthful and accepted the consequences.

Companies are the same way. In the hiring process if you aren't upfront or totally truthful on the background check and education/employment history, that's grounds for termination and ineligible for re-hire. They'll work with you about some things if you're honest but if not, you're gone. For example, if you have a DUI conviction, even if it's a misdemeanor, the background check only asks for felony convictions - but you better believe you have to disclose it or you most likely won't get hired.

He was lied to about Spygate. It spanned over half a decade of wrongdoing. The Pats denied it at first. They didn't heed the warnings given.

Yet, they get no suspensions for actually cheating. They lost a single draft pick and Belichick got off with only losing $500,000 (that compared to the 7 million Payton is going to lose).

This was more then just being lied to. This was a combination of him taking it personally, while having no personal connection to our franchise and no real value for it. If this were a major market or Robert Kraft's team we'd of gotten exactly what spygate got. Guaranteed.

Goodell is a huge hypocrite.

I'm sure that ALL of this is personal, all the way from the top on down, including all of the BS from the sports media. It seems that a lot of our own local media don't like Sean Payton either, with Jeff Duncan leading the pack of hypocrites.

First, let me say that I am absolutely shocked, like most, by the severity of the punishment on Coach Payton and Mickey Loomis. Frankly the length of suspension and the impact on Payton, the team AND the fans was outrageous. Having said that, I also believe that the Saints hierarchy needs to accept a large share of the responsibility for letting this get out of hand. The apparent lying to investigators IMO was only the straw that broke the camels back in terms of the NFL deciding on the level of punishment. It appears that they were warned about this all the way back to 2010 and the undisputed accounts are that this behavior/bounty continued into the 2011 playoffs a few months ago. That was shear stupidy or arrogance or both, but clearly the Saints held the cards to minimize the NFL's involvement and the penalties. They apparently did nothing or little and then tried to conspire to get their stories straight.

I am very angry that the Commissioner has decided to emasculate this team for 2012 and in doing so are absolutely penalizing the paying fans of this team. I am also angry that the Saints front office allowed this to continue, minimally by turning a blind eye or possibly by utter arrogance. POX to both!!!

Yep. Same reason why a school like SMU got the death penalty and Miami's violations have thus far been swept under the rug.

It's not right. I'm not saying it's right, but that doesn't mean you forget the way things really are. It's not a fair NFL. If you think that you're someone that can't get away with a violation the same way another organization might be able to, just don't do it in the first place. Just keep your nose clean.

Like they said in the SMU documentary on ESPN, if you're going to cheat, and you're not a traditional power, you better be good at it. Whoever's cheating needs to be a tight knit group. There were too many people involved in this and that leads to people running their mouths about it.

The punishment was too much. But Payton didn't do anything to get out of his own way either.

Did anybody else notice in the Goodel/Schefner Interview he said he had many sleepless nights over deciding this punishment? To me it sounds like he is worried about this coming back to haunt him. I say we keep complaining, call the NFL office, and participate in the scheduled rallys around town. This may sway him to reduce the sentence after the appeal. According to the NFL code of conduct, Payton can appeal.

Well Goodell is expecting GW to inform on the Saints players. If he doesn't, then it will be bad for him. With his quick admission and "apology", I suspect he has already agreed in hopes of salvaging his career.
whats there to tell other than alot of people in the locker room were talking smack. noone ever did anything blatantly wrong except Roman Harper hit on Steve Smith.
