I dont get the BPA (1 Viewer)

Here are picks 23-31 in 2001 when Deuce (BPA) was drafted:

23 23 Deuce McAllister Saints RB Mississippi
24 24 Willie Middlebrooks Broncos DB Minnesota
25 25 Freddie Mitchell Eagles WR UCLA
26 26 Jamar Fletcher Dolphins DB Wisconsin
27 27 Michael Bennett Vikings RB Wisconsin
28 28 Derrick Gibson Raiders DB Florida State
29 29 Ryan Pickett Rams DE Ohio State
30 30 Reggie Wayne Colts WR Miami (FL)
31 31 Todd Heap Ravens TE Arizona State

IIRC, the Saints were interested most in Todd Heap (pick #21 or #22) and Reggie Wayne that year, but Deuce fell into their laps...

Also backing up what Widge has said...

FA addresses immediate needs, draft covers long terms needs much more cheaply...who knows what our "needs" will be three years from now? But if you draft BPA, three years from now the guy you drafted will, hopefully, be in a position where he either has the position locked down or can step up to replace an aging starter who is becoming a problem cap-wise...

As such, I'm quite philosophical about the vicarious nature of being a supporter of a team...nothing I can do will change what happens so I'll support whatever they do (doesn't mean I won't b***h and moan if I think they're being stupid though)

The above obviously excludes moving to LA...instant revocation of Saints fandom (They're the NO Saints...fudge it! And I've never even been to the US!)

Finally, there is no reason to ever reach for a player. If the guy you really want is not rated near where you pick then you trade down and get more picks. There is no reason not too. You trust your scouts to do their job and move around as appropriate. Sometimes it means a trade down, sometimes it means a trade up.

You make the best point. "VALUE" has nothing to do with how good a player is or will be. It's a gauge of where evaluators perceive you to be. The perception was that Colston was a late round to FA talant. To draft him in the first round would have been a reach based on where you could have gotten him.

Was/Is he worth a 1st round pick? Absolutely. If the Saints or any other team would have drafted him in the 1st (based on the info that was available back then) they would have been criticized and rightfully so no matter how well it turned out. Because if you would have drafted him in the 2nd round, that means you could have spent your 1st round pick on another talanted player.

To pick a player a little higher then they're projected is ok if it means you're sure to get the player you really want but just because you reach for a player and they perform highly does not make you a good evaluator. Cuz you could have had both players if you played your cards correctly.

A bunch of jibberish to say, projection has nothing to do with what you will eventually do in the league. To many low pick play and to many high pick flop. You have to play it like the stock market and get your value to try to increase your chance to land more good players.

reggie bush didnt turn out to be the impact-offense-turnaround player .... smith is very pitiful since he take the starterjob .... deuce is injured again and jammal brow wasnt bpa , he was a need AND we traded up for him.

Bush was a huge part of our offensive turnaround in 06. Smith minus this year were everyone struggled, had a great year last year and has been a good DE since the day he was drafted.

All RB's have a shelf life. Deuce is at the end of his. But when we did pick him he gave us 3 probowl esque seasons (he did make it 2 times I think) before becoming hobbled. He had a good season in 06 also.

While I agree there are overwhelming pluses to the BPA strategy, I think common sense should be considered.

Take for instance Detroit....they utilize the BPA strategy and have drafted a WR with their first pick in 4 of the last 5 years. Based on previous years, I would expect in 2008 with the 15th pick they wouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger on a WR if he's the BPA.

Looking at the next 5 draft picks they passed on some pretty good players:

2007, Calvin Johnson and passed on Joe Thomas, Gaines Adams, Levi Brown, Laron Landry and Adrian Peterson. The jury is out on whether this was a good/bad move.
2005, Mike Williams and passed on: Demarcus Ware & Shawn Merriman.
2004, Roy Williams and passed on DeAngelo Hall & Ben Rothlesberger.
2003, Charles Rogers...passed on Terrence Newman (the other 4 were terrible).

The Lions have lots of problems--poor drafting is just one of them. However, in my book they are "Exhibit A" that drafting BPA in the first round without consideration of needs is a strategy fraught with peril.

In the case of the Lions, they just need to do better player evaluations...

I can't imagine they would, because I'm so hungry for defense, but they very well might.

Bpa is a good way to go if your in need of that position. If you don't need that position on your roster than you better be willing to trade the player that he will be replacing.Assuming that said player would actually bring some value other than a 3rd-4th round pick because everyone in the league knows that your trying to dump them and a pretty decent sized salary for another player/high second to maybe late 20's in the first in hopes of improving your team.

Gm's are cold natured beasts and you be very lucky to actually get a good deal on a player trade.
