Ian Rapoport: Saints to make a decision on Taysom Hill; hard to imagine Hill returning (258 Viewers)

I haven’t even thought of him playing Taysom as a full time quarterback, but you can certainly do worse than use Taysom in the Philly “tush push” situation better than you can Derek Carr.

I just think with so few weapons on this team, jettisoning one of your most versatile ones probably makes as much sense as smoking crack with the Mayor of DC.
Definitely just wondering if he does cut Carr, and you have Taysom for whatever we're paying him this year that it could be an option. Darnold played on what a 10 mill dollar year for Minnesota? something similar to what we could look at. Just something to throw out there, as smart as Moore is I can see him studying everyone and looking back at when Taysom was playing. He can utilize him just like Hurts. Would hate to waste a pick on a Dart, or Milroe when we got so many positions to fill. Everyone kind of chalking up this season as a loss, that it's gonna take time and if you can't land a Darnold, or a Fields in free agency then roll with what you got, while cleaning up the cap and starting a rebuild. Besides 26 is the year we land our QB in my opinion.

Maybe. I could certainly see this injury being too much for him. Not sure if he'll be healthy enough to even play his last year of his contract (he's owed a new 10m in salary). I have trouble picturing him signing a new contract. Seems like it's this year or done. He's not your typical 35yo though, so who knows.

If he retires he might do the Drew Brees deal which could save around 9mil I believe this year. That's on him though and leaves money leftover in 2026.

A straight cut (retirement) without manipulation is "even" on the books and clears it all this year. Certainly doable as well if we don't need the money now.

So you have options if he can't make it. I'm wait and see with a lot of these aging guys. Would be tough to see for him particularly because the injury. Dude was still going beast mode.

He might be a cap casualty. If you want to build a younger team through the draft these are the type of tough decisions that have to be made.

I can see him coming back in a reduced role, but if we draft TE and RB high, there may not be enough touches for him given the price tag.
Absolutely

We got $40 million in dead cap from void years in 2027. In 2028 it's still $24 million. The overwhelming majority of it is going to players in their 30's. Allen's love affair for vets is going to be like anchor for the next 2-3 years.
Those aren’t real. The contracts listed void earlier than that. All of them this year or next.

I think Taysom is a prime candidate for a pay cut to stay on the roster. With his injury he won’t sniff a new contract for a while. It would be far preferable for him to get paid a few million dollars to rehab with us.

They void earlier than that but my understanding is they still affect the cap for that year. So we have $40 million wasted on players not on the roster in 2027 and $24 million in 2028.

No, all of those void years accelerate to the year the contracts actually void. Chase Young, Tanoh, and Juwan will be this year, the rest are 2026.

At some point we're going to see him struggle in his role due to age. I honestly don't know when that will be. There's already hints that its begun, for example often being injured this past season. He played 8 out of 17 games.

As much as I hate to say it, his contract was awful. If the goal is to cut a player before you owe them a bunch of money and they struggle to contribute due to age, we should be moving on from him.
At the time it seemed fair, because noone even considered that he wouldn’t succeed. So it seemed like a slam dunk. If he gets cut then it’s a disaster fail. However, I don’t think it’s necessary over for Carr and the Saints, perhaps he has a redemption year this year under Moore. Will Moore waste effort on Carr? Sean gave it his all to work with Russ and JW to try and win with him in those years. So I’d expect Moore to do the same working with Carr in 25. We know that Carr can learn an offense, as he learned them all already.

I think the team may reach out to Hill about renegotiating that $10m base salary. They could guarantee a portion of it and replace some of the dollars with incentives so he can earn it back if he returns healthy. It would be a win for both sides, as Hill is unlikely to have a big market in free agency due to his age and injury.
Agree with this.

Although we know there’s one team/coach who will likely want to get him and maybe even overpay.

When he got here, one of the things people were saying about him is that he struggles in the first year of a new offense. I don't know that we saw that here but we also never saw him in year two with either coordinator he's had here. If he's still year, this will be his 5th coordinator in 5 years.
