N/S Kirk Cousins May Be More Hurt Than Thought (1 Viewer)

You need more than 1 play to determine if his rehab didn't go well but in order to throw any kind of ball with any velocity you need to be pushing off the ball of your rear foot...

I've never really looked at his mechanics before but you should also look at his pre-injury throws to see if he is one of these people that don't use their lower body very much.

He isn't push-driving off of that back foot at all...
I personally do not think that clip shows anything but poor footwork

Saw this is another thread, but it's worthy of its own discussion. It does look like he can't set his feet and push off the right leg.

Anyone have any thoughts on if this is the Achilles still giving him issues?

I mean he might be injured, but that one play looks more to me like he realized at the last instant that the pass was going to get picked off so he turfed it/didn't follow through

But it doesn't make sense if they're going to wheel Kirk out there every week even though he can't move instead of playing Penix.

Could be as simple as buying as much time as possible for Penix to pickup the playbook, plus, letting Kirk play his way off the field makes it a lot less controversial to put Penix in. It is a very real possibility that Atlanta is winless going into the Carolina game, and that would be the perfect time to make a QB change and ease Penix in against a cupcake instead of the cream of the crop. Penix and the alcons runover the helpless kittens, their ten fans are hyped again, and their rookie has some confidence.

And it doesn't make sense to give Cousins $100 million guaranteed and then draft Penix. Unless you knew that Cousins' injury wasn't going to heal. In which case, they should not have singed Cousins in the first place.

I hope he is ok. A) he is a good bloke B) NFL played with backup QBs is a poor and uninteresting product.

It makes me wonder if they found out something about Cousins between signing him and the draft.

If Cousins has not recovered from his injury, maybe that he why they took a QB in the first round? The Saints took a chance on Brees after he was seriously injured, but he was a much younger player. The fact they gave Cousins such a huge contract with an uncertain recovery from a serious injury, and considering his age, is very Falconesque. But one game does not a season make.

Look at the clip that shows all of his drop backs. Never gets out of the pocket. All quick passes. He’s not right.

It could just be that he's not fully healed but he's going to play because he knows he has Penix breathing down his neck. That's yet another reason that you don't pay a guy $100 million guaranteed and then draft his replacement with a high first round pick that you traded up to get.

The Penix pick has to be separate from the Cousins contract when considering things.

Q1: Is 36yo Cousins coming off a mid-season Achilles tear worth 100M guaranteed for 2yrs plus 35M dead cap in 2026 or 135M over 3yrs.? Nope. Rodgers and Carr are the top/bottom range for Cousins and ATL over-paid (15-30M). That injury at that age should have resulted in a better contract for ATL.

Q2: Was drafting Penix at 9 a reasonable pick? Yes. ATL just signed a 36yo QB coming off an injury to a 2yr or 3yr deal. They likely won't finish worse than 7-10 which keeps them out of the top QB draft range. We have seen terrible years for QB talent over the last 4 drafts. If you like the pick, you take it. Nobody would question this ATL move if we traded up to 9 in 2017.
