Let's Make a Run at Mike McCarthy (29 Viewers)

How is Aaron Rodgers going full “Simple Jack” MM’s fault?

Yeah I've been wanting him here all year, I think outside of Detroits OC, he is the best candidate out there. He just simply wins everywhere he goes.

Can he return the Saints to Conference championship games. I don't know. But it'll be better than what we have had to endure since 2022 started

People don't want a retread or a guy who has obviously reached their ceiling. No Super Bowl-winning coach has won a ring with another team. But hey, let the post-Sean low expectations continue.

Who do you want?

If the ceiling is 12-5 seasons and a Super Bowl win, what ceiling is high enough for you? Only Belichick?

And it doesn't matter if no coach has won a Super Bowl with two different franchises. It hasn't happened until it does and it's a nonsensical reason not to hire a coach.

And, I'm not sure McCarty is the right choice, but a .608 career win percentage (only 1% worse than Payton), 4 NFC Championship Game appearances (1 more than Payton), and 1 Super Bowl win (same as Payton) isn't close to low expectations unless you consider a 12-5 record in 3 of the last 4 years, consistently being in the playoffs, 4 NFC Championship games, and a Super Bowl win as low expectations. And if you do then I don't know that any coach is going to meet your expectations.

So what hire is not a low expectations hire?

That's because winning a Super Bowl is a difficult feat, let alone winning multiple. The coaches that do accomplish that tend to be in situations where they are working with an exceptional QB / producing exceptional QB play.

Few coaches ever get close to winning a championship and most coaches don't succeed at a high level. Odds are strongly in favor of a coaching hire not working out longterm.

Fan expectations don't foretell results.

And most coaches that do win Super Bowls with that QB and with great synergy with the front office don't tend to go to other teams. They stay as long as they can and then retire.

A fresh face not a retread, I've said that several times.

History says it will not happen, and I want us to get another ring. Shouldn't that be the goal? I don't find his time in Dallas impressive, considering their talent.

Shooting down every candidate as lazy, low ceiling, low ambition, etc. is easy. Naming a guy that is not those things who will be a better HC than McCarthy is not. I personally would like to see Kingsbury or Brady get the job, but I know that both are a much higher risk than McCarty and that both are more likely than not to flame out while McCarty would more likely than not result in a playoff appearance in 2 or 3 years.

Every single coach has negatives but we have to hire one of them.

So, who is your pick?

History also said no QB can win the Super Bowl with two different franchises. And then Payton Manning and Tom Brady did it.

And there are few coaches that even attempt to do it. Most stay with the team that they won it with as long as possible and those that leave are often at the end of their career and don't have the time to build a team again before age catches up with them. Not to mention the fact that few HCs win Super Bowls in general.

If you want to argue that McCarty is too old or the game has passed him by, that's a valid argument, but the counter is that he is the same age as Payton and younger than Andy Reid and he has a 12-5 record in 3 of the last 4 years.

I feel like all the complaints about this coach or that QB not having a SB pedigree ignores the fact that two QB's won half the Super Bowls played in the last two decades. It's pretty hard for other coaches/QB's etc. to book a bunch of SB wins when there are only 10 to go around for the rest of the league in the last 20 years.

I've always liked McCarthy and I think he could do well with the franchise. I also like the idea of taking a shot on some younger candidates with fresher ideas. I really don't know if McCarthy could win a SB with the Saints. Yes, he did it in Green Bay, and Dallas is a dumpster fire and doesn't count. But I don't really care. I think he could help a great deal in the upcoming rebuild - which is likely to take 2-3 years - after which McCarthy might get a few more years to reap the benefits.

While I do like the other candidates, my concern would be that either they, the players, and/or the fans would get frustrated before the full turnaround happened.

Finally, and this is probably the best argument for McCarthy, this is the guy that was the Saints OC when Aaron Brooks won our first playoff game. If he could make Brooks look decent (and, IMO, he did), I dare say what he could do with Rattler or whoever comes along.

Except he's not a Sean Payton 2.0. At all. Mike McCarthy has always underachieved in Dallas after Aaron Rodgers who caused a mutiny against Mike McCarthy in Green Bay. Sean Payton is overachieving in Denver after Drew Brees who retired loving his coach.

Can Mike McCarthy build a team? Yes. Can he out coach opposing coaches? No. Dallas has been silly stacked with talent the last several years and still got him basically nowhere in terms of super bowl competition.

I feel like people are so desperate just to compete for a wild card they're willing to settle for it in hopes that luck will show up to make a positive difference. I'd rather get a coach who can build a super bowl competitor and out coach the opposition. Swing for the fence.

Mike McCarthy should be viewed as a last resort.
What do you mean he is not? Explain. Because from a numbers standpoint they are mirror images of one another

Sean has been a HC for 17 years, Mike for 18 years

Sean is 170-105 as a HC, Mike is 174-112

Sean is 9-9 in the playoffs, Mike is 11-11

Sean has been to the NFC Championship 3 times, Mike 4 times

Sean is 1-0 in the SB, Mike is 1-0 in the SB

Sean has had a top 10 scoring offense 12 times, Mike has 11 times

Sean has had a top 10 scoring D 5 times, Mike has 6 times

He literally is Sean Payton 2.0 or Sean is Mike McCarthy 2.0

And do not act for one second like Sean did not underachieve in New Orleans a few seasons. Love everything about SP and appreciate him to my core, but come on....
