Marquez Callaway (2 Viewers)

It was an iffy call at best, but I can see why it was called if the ref wasn't looking directly at them when it happened. Sucks for Callaway, who should have had two TDs and over 100yds if not for circumstances that were out of his control.
This is one of my MAJOR problems with the NFL officials. So often, there are anticipatory calls in lieu of actually SEEING infractions occur.

Be it DPI, OPI, roughing the passer, or any other penalty, instances of anticipatory calls are totally out of control. If you don't see it, don't call it! Without the ability to review many of these calls, referees can't be impacting games as severely as they do based--in many cases--on assumption.

BRING US THE INDEPENDENT SKY JUDGE!

It looked more of a traditional ankle roll (inside), as it got rolled up on. High ankle sprains usually happen when the ankle is bent outwards.

Sucked to see him leave the game cause he was playing so well and should of had a TD if not called back for a crappy OPI.

The way he left it seemed pretty bad but hopefully it's just an sprained ankle.
He’s fine. Said so in an interview after the game

So what happened on that OPI that wiped out Callaway's TD? It looked to me like TQS was just running his route -- I didn't see a pick. Am I wrong?

Payton said a call like that could go either way. He said TQS could've done better to ensure it wasn't called.

What an impressive player. His two biggest plays from last week didn’t show up in the stats book. 1) he made a huge block on one of Kamara’s TD runs. He’s already a great blocking WR. 2) He save Brees from an INT by breaking up a poorly underthrown pass. If that gets picked off who know what happens in that game.

3) The next play after 2) he records a first down catch. I believe it was a 12 yard out....

I think this kid has a bright future, he already knows how to play the position in the NFL and will only get better....just stay healthy.....

Callaway is just so well rounded. Most of the work he puts in doesn’t translate to the statbook. I was happy to see that he was finally used down the field. That’s his biggest attribute.

I'm getting a man-crush on Callaway. He's got hands, size, speed, blocking, elusiveness and gets open.

If our 7th round rookie deserved his own thread, I think that Callaway should definitely also have his own thread.

I had Callaway as my #31 WR prospect in the draft, but had him as 4th-5th round prospect. I haven’t been this excited about a late round/UDFA Saints player since Marques Colston (who dominated the Shrine game the year he came out).

I asked one of the most respected draftniks that I know about about Callaway. He actually had Marquez Callaway as his #2 WR on his big board. He was higher on Kamara than anyone I knew. Before the draft said he would be the best RB. Pretty ballsy, but gave very good reasons for his very optimistic ranking.

“As perfect as Alvin Kamara. What is it with the Saints picking up undervalued Tennessee players recently? First it was Alvin. Then last year they signed Shy Tuttle as an undrafted free agent and he started several games for them. And now they get a guy who I think is gonna be one of the biggest steals in this draft.

With Callaway think DeAndre Hopkins when it comes to skill set. He's got AMAZING hands. And when I say amazing I mean it. He makes one handed catches in the redzone on jump ball fades look easy. This guy is not a body catcher. He's a guy who high points the football well. He's great in the redzone on jump ball fades despite being just 6'2". He consistently makes contested catches down the field Mossing defenders despite his relatively average measurables. He's not the biggest or fastest guy like Hopkins but he just knows how to play receiver.

Given how successful players with similar skill sets to Callaway have had in Sean Payton's system (i.e. Marques Colston/Michael Thomas), I personally couldn't think of a better team for him to go to. If I were a Saints fan I would be celebrating. He's going to be a steal.”

Well done.

That 27 yard snatch down the sideline was a thing of exquisite beauty and should have Saints fans giddy about this young man's future.

And the capper is he's an excellent blocker!

Yeah I agree with you this is Marques Colston level steal.

He definitely takes some of the sting away from Colston retiring.....finally. I'm strongly rooting for this young man to be our next long term great receiver.

Hes just work, work ,work.

One of the best blocking WRs since Hines Ward.

A great add to the team.

You really have been dead on with him from the beginning. Props.

Only concern I have with him long-term is durability. But if he stays healthy, he’s an awesome compliment to CGM.

Here's a recent article of Callaway and how he compares to prior Saints rookie WRs throughout history. I think that it is pretty notable that the Saints didn't bring in a FA or draft a WR until the 7th round. TQS only has one year left on his rookie deal. Harris will likely continue to be focused on special teams. That really leaves Callaway as a big time contributor.

With Michael Thomas down (and possibly on the out) and TreQuan Smith being nicked up (yet again), Marquez Callaway has ran with the opportunity. Currently looks like the Saints WR1. Not sure that changes any time soon, even with Smith returns.
