[Merged] N/S- Henry Ruggs car accident in Vegas (update from old thread) (3 Viewers)

With so many services like Lyft, Uber, and taxi cabs, I’ll never understand getting behind the wheel while intoxicated
Agreed. What's more is that there is a professional track in Vegas where you can drive your super sports car as fast as you want.... Want to drink? Get an Uber. Want to go superfast in your Corvette? Go to the racetrack.

Want to do both? That's a terrible idea but I bet that racetrack will let you sign a waiver for enough money...

And while there's no excuse for drinking and driving, Ruggs is 22 years old. This is going to be a hard, life changing event for him too. He's likely going to be suspended from the league for a year and he's probably going to face other consequences, litigation and possibly lose a lot more, all for making the decision to drive while intoxicated.

The victims family will be traumatized and this whole thing is sad all the way around.
It's just tragic. I really do hope that Ruggs comes out of this a better man.

Really? Nah, the vehicles aren't the issue, it's the decision making. I don't care what kind of car they drive as long as they're being responsible about it.
That's why I qualified my post as a "side note"!!! Ruggs is going to jail for his stupid decision to drive drunk.

I was just making the point that these kids (and yes, he's a kid) have so much money available to them, they end up buying more than they can physically and mentally handle.

I agree. And while he's been charged with DUI, I don't think that's the end of the story. I'm not sure I want to trust the police report until all of the facts are out. Let's remember this is less than 24 hours ago. Maybe there's more to it. It looks really bad for Ruggs right now, and it should. We'll see.

My prayers are for all involved, the victims and Rugg. Horrible situation. I have zero mercy for Rugg but I feel for him. Not many people are in his situation, money and fame at this age. I don't think he deserves to lose his career, but for sure he should get some jail time and lose a lot of money in a civil trial.
I do have concern for this rich and talented young NFL player, but it does not come close to the sadness I feel for an innocent victim robbed of his/her life and dreams. Ruggs made a terrible judgement mistake for driving after drinking and he needs to pay a steep price for taking a life, including jail time that maybe, just maybe, will be a lesson for the talented and rich young men who come into professional sports. Just take an UBER, how easy should that be!!

There is a lot of hypocrisy in this thread. I would say it's safe to say that 90% of us have messed up and driven home impaired. We all got lucky that we did make it home unscathed. Yes, there is a lot of options to get home safe now, but alcohol doesn't care about all of that. It makes you forget all of that. Most of us live in Louisiana and in this case Las Vegas where it's really easy to go out and get drinks. This young man made a huge mistake and he will have to pay for it for the rest of his life. He pays tribute to one of his best friends who died the same way. I'm sure the pain he is going to feel for this happening is gonna haunt him the rest of his life.

He was driving drunk? What a loser, I hope he gets to feel the full power of the legal system from prison. I don’t care for drunk drivers one bit. They can rot for all I care.

Having lost a loved one due to a stupid drunk driver, I find it hard to show stupid people mercy. Get a Lyft you loser.

My mom once got up at 4.30 in the morning and drove from Pearl River to New Orleans to get me because I was drunk. I was 21 and home from boot camp. She always said to call. She was not happy and didn't talk the entire ride home but she was happy I didn't drive.

She clearly raised you right as you took the time to call. We did that on a couple or three occasions with our son and while not happy with their drinking we were very very happy they would call. Of course after boot camp you would probably take 'orders' from anyone not a PFC!!!

I've never once gotten behind the wheel after having any amount to drink. Not one time and I'm 50 years old. There's no excuse for it.

I'm not saying Ruggs shouldn't have the chance to learn from this and recover. But he's going to have to deal with the consequences pretty much for the rest of his life. But those consequences are a direct and justified result for getting behind the wheel while intoxicated. He's 100% responsible for that.

I'm not trying to justify him doing what he did at all, I'm just saying there is a lot of judgment going on by a lot of people that have made the same mistake he did and luckily didn't kill anybody. You, unfortunately, are the minority IMO to have never drunk and drove.

While i understand your sentiment, its just not that simple to make comparisons like this.

First off, Ruggs is fully capable of affording a host of services to transport him in any situation. Second, his "career" comes with certain responsibilities. Now, an argument could be made regarding a 23 yr old shouldering those responsibilities, but thats a different argument for a different day.

So yeah its a mistake. A huge mistake that, as you said, will affect him til he dies. The point most are making here is that he had a choice. He made it and now suffers the consequences not only financially and personally, but socially as well. There are PLENTY of folks here and elsewhere that have NEVER driven drunk.

At this point, if im one of 32 NFL teams, I give every player, from rookie to 15 year vet a card. A card that has a preferred method of conveyance ( lyft/uber etc ) and install on phone and USE IT. Shoot, we will foot the bill and you pay us back.

but your equating his choices to ours when the "situations" are not remotely the same.

Therefore, it appears you are "defending" him.

That’s love.
