Rumor- "samuel Said To Be A "done Deal"" (1 Viewer)

The world isn't divided between Cover-2 CBs and "lockdown cover corners"

Very true, nobody does one or the other. You may lean one way, and have your personel built towards man/man or coverage...but these guys have played CB in different systems and athletically can adjust.

I wouldn't pick up a guy in a deep cover 2 scheme like Kelly or Barber though. Those guys have been in a very complex cover 2 scheme for such a long time that it would be hard to get out. Get this deal done....get some help up front and take the pressure off our secondary.

I'm in the minority here. He's very good. He deserves the money as much as any other CB. Throw in the fact that the Saints have the worst CB group in the NFL. With all that said, I don't want him as a Saint. That's too much money and I don't like his punk attitude. The 49ers proved that one guy, no matter how talented, that is paid like two or three guys, isn't enough to get the job done.

If we sign him we'll regret it, as fans at least. The moment he gets beat in week 1 this entire board will turn on him. Its not gonna be pretty, especially for a guy at his salary.

After the earlier discussion about tampering and dealing before FA starts, I thought this article was timely :)

If everyone's doing it, free-agent tampering is OK

ESPN said:
One of the biggest half-truths about the NFL scouting combine is that it's all about the upcoming draft. Sure, there are 300-plus prospects and even more coaches and scouts in town. What happens in the workouts will be a factor in the April draft, but it won't do nearly as much in shaping the immediate rosters of teams as what's happening just outside the walls of the RCA Dome.

That's where front offices and teams have started the process of free agency, even though that process doesn't officially start until Friday morning. With lots of winks and nods, visits are being scheduled and some negotiations have begun.

Sure, it all violates the NFL's rules against tampering. But nobody cares.

If we sign him we'll regret it, as fans at least. The moment he gets beat in week 1 this entire board will turn on him. Its not gonna be pretty, especially for a guy at his salary.

And then the moment in week 2 when he returns his first pick 6 will turn everyone back around on his side.

That's life in the fast lane. :D

I for one am very excited about this. Samual/MM/Young is the way to go!

Can you imagine if we do draft DRC or McKelvin and and teams try to pick on them all the time to stay away from Asante? :hihi:

Still need good LB's if they cant put preasure on the Qb alot of CB's will look bad, even the best ones!!!

..... but in all seriousness if the deal happens(better be true) there is no way a single sober saints fan can knock this move....
Playing devil's advocate - how many poked fun at Nate Clements contract last year and wondered why anyone would pay a CB that amount of money?

If they sign Asante, it's a good sign McKenzie won't be back due to injury, salary, and/or age.

I dunno bout that. I think it's more or less a safety blanket move in case MM can't come back for awhile. Looks like they're preparing for worst case scenario which is good. Anything else is a bonus.

The 49ers proved that one guy, no matter how talented, that is paid like two or three guys, isn't enough to get the job done.

Crazy statement. LT's contract in 04 made him the highest paid RB in the history of the game, did he "get the job done"? Other players on huge contracts include Brian Urlacher, Peyton Manning, Ray Lewis and now Bob Sanders.

In fact I like the Sanders comparison. As we've all said, the $100m bit isn't the scary thing about the proposed contract because he'll never finish it. The bit that makes you gulp is the $24-30m (depending on what you read) guaranteed money. Well Sanders is on $20m guaranteed for his 5 year contract. Like it or not, as you've already pointed out, that is the going rate for a top DB these days. So if we're really serious about becoming a perennial playoff contender, then that's the kind of money we're talking.

Now you can say you don't think he's worth it. You can say you don't think anyone is worth it (although market forces would obviously disagree). But to say that if you pay him that much he won't get the job done is ridiculous.

I don't think anyone here believes that signing Samuel would instantly transform our Defense - he is just one part of a very complicated puzzle. And obviously he's going to have a lot of pressure on him, wherever he goes. But I hope he does come to NO. I hope he takes his place as a starting Corner and continues the excellent play we've seen from him in New England. If he does that, as far as I'm concerned, he's earned his money, however much it does eventually turn out to be.

I still say get DRC @10... he and Samuel, with Usama and JD... :scared:

Yes. If MM isn't good ta go at the beginning of the season, Asonte :)hihi:) and David will be our CBs and we all know how that went last year with David.:covri: . Now, if we still draft a CB @ #10, then we will be set. The safety blanket will be a CB @ #10, not Asante.

Thats the problem with some people, samuel will be a BEAST but you can't get down on him if he gets beat Bailey gets beat, Blye gets beatm, NNDSFLDSF from Oakland gets beat. Guys you have to understand that he will get beat at least once

Asante is the consummate shutdown corner/bonafide starter. Rarely does a rookie CB come in and dominate the way an Asante type CB will. If ARC can contribute immediately great but my money will be on Asante. All of our young CB's can learn a great deal under Asante as well as MM from the sideline till he gets back on the field.
