Saints and Carr deal released $150M over 4 years $100M fully guaranteed (5 Viewers)

All in all, I’m very happy with this signing. He’s not Brees (who is?) and I’m not sure he’s going to get us to a Super Bowl (especially with this coaching staff) but he’s definitely an upgrade.

As has been said over and over, we’re instantly the team to beat in the NFC South. That alone makes this a good signing. I also think the money part of this was pretty well done. Loomis really did his job on this one.

Now the QB distraction is over, we need to give Carr the protection he deserves with a beefed up O-Line.

Next season isn’t in the bag, but it sure as heck looks a lot better than it did yesterday.

At $50M in his 4th year, I think he'll either only play 3 years, or we'll renegotiate in his last year, unless he becomes a top 5 QB. I think we'll draft a QB, and if he's ready in the 4th year, then the rookie will take over.

still cant get over how much these QBs are making 37.5 mil a year I guess Lamar was right to turn down his last deal.....

I think if you take off the 44mil of fluff that he’s not going to get in year 4, it puts him right between Goff and Cousins. But with the fluff he’s got the 9th highest average. That’s about to drop to 12 real quick when Burrow, Lamar, and Hurts get their extensions.

Even lower than 12 probably. Carr's contract is 33M/yr for the first 3. Tannehill counts as 36M this year. Daniel will likely average 35M. Cousins will make 38-40M. Burrow, Lamar, and Hurts will eclipse Carr. Geno Smith might average more at 3yr/105. Heck, Matt Ryan costs 35M in cap this year. I think he ends up 15th on the list which is really fair value for the player.

I said with the fluff. So that’s at the 37.5 average. I saw on one of the TV shows Tannehill listed at 29.5 so that’s why I have him below Carr. Even if you take out the 44mil of fluff. That takes his contract down from 4/150 to 3/106. Geno is 3/105 so he’s barely ahead of Geno.

Not a sarcastic response: when has this strategy worked lately successfully?
Bengals when they dumped a whole bunch of salary and then drafted guys like Burrow, Chase and Higgins. Then they had enough money to sign key pieces to their defense away from cash strapped teams with a ton of dead money. Guys like Trey Hendrickson and Von Bell.

Bills also dumped mediocre QB play and salary, sucked it up and accumulated draft picks to rebuild through the draft.

Who did Mahomes replace in Kansas City?

The Eagles did a reset after dumping Wentz. They had a good young core at the time, kept those guys and then built around them.

Name the last time a vet QB with a losing record was paired with a head coach with a losing record on a team with a 25% of their salary dedicated to dead cap went on to do anything.

You (conveniently) picked the teams that hit on the 4 best QBs in the league today.

How about every other team that struck out?

There’s no perfect way to do it. Bottoming out and taking a QB with a high pick doesn’t guarantee anything. In fact, odds are that you whiff and end up in the same place later.

I’ll take it.

I think we’ll follow the KC model. They were contenders with Alex Smith and when the opportunity presented itself, they got their young QB. We can get out of this deal with Carr after two years. We can get out of it after 3 years. But I’m excited to see what he can do with a decent defense. He never had a top 20 defense. I believe we had half a dozen 7-9, 8-8 seasons with Brees and Payton and a bad defense.
