Saints at the top of Davante Adams’ wish list [Raiders trade Adams to Jets for conditional 3rd ; Jets paying Adams’ entire remaining salary] (2 Viewers)

I don't think you understand how shallow this team is. Every draft pick we lose is the loss of a potential 3-5 year player, not the 10-11 games we'd get out of Adams. And every dollar we add to future caps is a dollar less than we can spend on free agent depth. We've played that game for a while now and the team we're seeing on the field right now is the result. There is no need to compound those issues for a 10-11 game rental on what is looking more and more like a lost season.

Serious question - How much depth do you think other teams have, especially good teams with top of the line type starters?

I mean some teams may have depth at certain positions, but most teams are top heavy these days and are crushed when a position group sees injuries.

I just feel like you have a vision of an absolutely perfect roster that isn’t realistic regardless of how much cap space you hold onto.

The key is drafting and developing well…we have been subpar there lately. It’s more about the people we acquire and less about how we manage our financial budget IMO.

Do you happen to know if his agent has been given permission to discuss that with potential trading partners or if it's like when Carr was being shopped and they had to have trade parameters in place before they would allow him to talk to other teams?

Good question. Nothing like that has been reported that I know of. It’s honesty just my own conjecture based on the tea leaves we know and how these things tend to work.

That's a good question and definitely relevant to Adams' situation. Good call. I have no idea and curious if that's been made known.

If our entire future hinges on a single second round pick then we may as well go ahead and close up shop now, call up Ian Book and just have him start the rest of the season and tank…..

Giving up a single second round pick is not selling the future, or even close to it.
A 2nd rounder is a pretty steep price for a 10-11 game rental. Especially when your team is 2-3 facing the starting QB being out multiple weeks along with several other key players. I would not give up anything more than a 3rd or 4th.

Without Carr it's possible the wheels come off here. I never wanted to give a 2nd for Adams. And now I feel even more strongly about it. That could be a high pick. I was warming up to a 3rd. But now I'm feeling solid at a 4th. Maybe 4th and 5th or two 4ths. But I don't think I want to go higher under our current circumstances.

Season aint over, we got 2 qbs that are mobile and that will help cover holes in the oline and give us a chance on offense.
They aren't miracle workers. If they were automatic solutions, they would have already been on the field. We should not set our expectations too high for either.

It might be a little premature, but by the time an Adams deal would be done we will play one if not two more games and we have no interior OL and we are either going to start a rookie QB or a 2nd year QB with no starting experience in those games. There is some chance they could win those games, more likely Denver because they are not good and are starting a rookie QB, but they could easily lose both in this situation. So, by the time trade could happen there is a very real possibility of being 2-5. At that point, maybe your best hope is 9 wins and that would take a major run and major turnaround. It's possible if everyone gets healthy, but IMO it's not likely.
Fair enough. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

If we trade a 2nd round pick for him, I’m pretty confident in saying that it would be under the condition that we will have him more than the remainder of this season. We would not be trading a 2nd round pick without a commitment beyond 2024, no way. This probably shouldn’t be an argument basis.

Absolutely. I'm not even sure I'd want any trade involving a 2nd, even with a longer term agreement. Adams is still on the wrong side of 30 and for all we know, he could retire in a year or two. For me it's 3rd or 4th or walk away.

What y'all are failing to realize is you’re not giving up the 2nd for Adams alone. You give up the 2nd for Adams and LV eating around 16 million dollars that we don’t have to pay and further hamper our future cap. We are not getting a team to eat 16 million dollars for a 4th round pick, they would just take a 5th from someone else and keep that money.

And again, if a single pick is what kills our future, then we have no future, trade everyone you can and start the rebuild today, probably even look into relocating the team 🤷‍♂️

I’d be willing to give a second in a deal like I laid out earlier, where we get the financial
help we need and a decent pick packaged with Adams signed up for beyond 2024.

I’d also be okay with it if we did something conditional based on how our season ends. I.E. if we make it to the Championship Round and Adams has played more than 50% of the snaps, the pick upgrades from a 3rd to a 2nd, or something to that effect.

We can get very creative with this thing. Based on the financial help we need to make the deal, we probably will HAVE to be creative like this.

Just my opinion, but declaring the season lost when you're 2-3 and about to play a division rival seems way premature. You may ultimately wind up being right, but if the Saints win this week, they're right back in the mix for the division.

Yup, totally agreed. Just as silly as folks declaring us contenders after 2 games……

The NFL season is long and unpredictable, anything can happen…..

I think many teams have superior quality depth than the Saints do at many positions. We are consistently filling out our roster 4-6 weeks after free agency starts taking on 3rd tier guys. I don't need day 1 guys, but how about a few more 2nd tier players as depth. Something more than league minimum vets and UDFAs? We started 3 league minimum guys on the line on Monday night in Saldiveri, Patrick and Young. Lemieux and McGovern are minimum guys as well. I don't believe for a minute those are the guys we wanted. Those are the guys we could afford because of our cap management strategy.

Yes, we haven't drafted well recently that is a problem. But it's compounded by our lack of ability to bring in serviceable players.
