Saints at the top of Davante Adams’ wish list [Raiders trade Adams to Jets for conditional 3rd ; Jets paying Adams’ entire remaining salary] (2 Viewers)

Fair enough. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I think if you somehow win the next two, or at least win one of the next two, some kind of deal for Adams might make sense. But I don't want to give up more than a 3rd or 4th and I'd like them to be careful about how an extension or reworked contract would be done.

Serious question - How much depth do you think other teams have, especially good teams with top of the line type starters?

I mean some teams may have depth at certain positions, but most teams are top heavy these days and are crushed when a position group sees injuries.

I just feel like you have a vision of an absolutely perfect roster that isn’t realistic regardless of how much cap space you hold onto.

The key is drafting and developing well…we have been subpar there lately. It’s more about the people we acquire and less about how we manage our financial budget IMO.

I don't expect the Saints to have All Pros and Pro Bowlers as backups to All Pros and Pro Bowlers, but no one can deny this offense died when McCoy and Hill got injured. They couldn't overcome two players getting hurt. That to me is unacceptable and why while I don't like the idea of trading critical future assets for Adams, at the same time it is clear why it makes sense to want to get Adams.

However after the additional injuries Monday, I think it would be downright stupid for the Saints to go get Adams right now. They should wait until the trade deadline, see what the record is and get Adams for as cheap as possible if the Saints still have life. If the Jets with no Head Coach and no future at QB want to beat the Saints to the punch and trade their future assets for a soon to be 32 year old WR, they can go right ahead. If a team like the Vikings or Commanders feel Adams will put them over the top, it is what it is. If the Saints are 4-5 at the deadline, sure, I'd absolutely make a play for Adams even if it involves a 2nd. But if this skid continues and the Saints show up at the deadline with a 3-6 record? No way.

And again, if a single pick is what kills our future, then we have no future, trade everyone you can and start the rebuild today, probably even look into relocating the team 🤷‍♂️

The Saints with Ireland have been phenomenal in the first two rounds of the draft. A 2nd round pick for the Saints is drastically more likely to be an 8 year starter than a bust. That's not something you just casually brush off for a WR who will be 32 before the season ends.

What y'all are failing to realize is you’re not giving up the 2nd for Adams alone. You give up the 2nd for Adams and LV eating around 16 million dollars that we don’t have to pay and further hamper our future cap. We are not getting a team to eat 16 million dollars for a 4th round pick, they would just take a 5th from someone else and keep that money.

They're the ones who signed him to that dumb contract. They should eat it. He's about to be a 31 year old receiver. 32 next year. How many 32 year old receivers are playing at level that you would want to give up a 2nd round pick and 30mil/year for them?

I'm looking at the top receivers now. Diggs 7th turns 31 about the same time as Adams. Evans 19th just turned 31. Tyreek 20th turns 31 in March. Lockett 25th is 32. So there we go. One receiver in the top 25 is 32 years old.

I'm not sure Davante is a good investment even for just a couple years.

Not sure he even has $16 million remaining this year.

Okay now ask yourself this…Is this because we didn’t have cap dollars for better veterans, or is it because we drafted poorly over multiple years and didn’t have anyone ready to step in?

How many teams have OL depth that isn’t recent draft picks or veteran minimum, 1 year deal types? Probably not many.

We just have the wrong people.

The Saints have consistently drafted well in the first two rounds. However since 2016, they have drafted just two players in total out of WR, RB, and TE in the first two rounds. Hence why in that very quote I state it is clear why it makes sense to make a move for a guy like Adams.

Yeah, overall depth on the OL in the NFL is bad. Which is why you just have to hit on your OL picks but we didn't hit on Saldiveri or Young and IMO we don't use enough mid to late round picks on developmental OL. Part of that is they spend too many picks moving up and more or less refuse to move down. They just weren't ready when Armstead, Hurst, and Peat moved on to replace them with guys that were drafted and developed in part because they missed on some guys and in part because they don't really value draft picks. It's a hard way to operate if you also use up most of your cap on your high priced veterans. You cut your margin of error way down if you also then trade away picks that you need to have depth at every position, especially the OL.

For years this team had the depth where they just needed true impact players in the draft. But, we haven't really been in that position for 3 or 4 years but they haven't really adjusted the way they value draft picks. They did some of that this year, although they still traded up for Kool-Aid, but they need to do better accumulating and keeping draft picks until they have depth and are ready for a run.

Everything is happening like it needs to.

Losing these last two games + Derek going out should cause some pause on how much effort we're putting into trading for him. Meanwhile the Jets firing their HC also works in our favor. The Raiders are motivated to move him because they're paying him to sit, so the slower we move on it, the better for us, and the lower the compensation they'll be willing to accept. Also the $ on his contract goes down.

If possible waiting until after the Thursday game would be the best time to snag him and get him assimilated into the offense and team w/ the mini bye.

I don't think we should trade for anyone other than OL. We need to establish our identity first as a team. We played two good games, and then we underperformed and played sloppy vs. KC.

Trading for an aging player with a high salary is not ideal for Saints future and team management.

What legit OL out there is on the trade block? Until there's someone actually being named and a real possibility, it's a waste of time suggesting this.

We've already laid out what a possible trade would look like, so I'll leave it at that.

That isn't what he said though. He said we shouldn't be trading for any who isn't an offensive lineman. Not either or, just not another position other than OL. I tend to agree.
