Saints planned to interview Mike McCarthy; McCarthy didn’t garner enough interest from Saints and will take a year off (8 Viewers)

The cap went down ~$15 million. All other teams had to deal with it as well. Only one still has it as an excuse 5 years later.
Go ahead and ignore the point then, which was that Covid hurt that strategy more than other teams. That is a fact. They were already committed before Covid hit and the cap going down hurt teams making full use of the cap more than those who weren't.

I'm not addressing what happened after, which is a different discussion.

It's not really a different discussion. It hurt the strategy because it wasn't / isn't a good strategy and it's never even benefited the team in any meaningful way. The Covid shortfall was much smaller than what we've had to eat sitting on Ram's contract. We took on $17m in dead money to cut Galette. That $15 million should not be an excuse in 2025 and we certainly didn't learn from it because we're still doing it.

I feel Loomis plays the salary cap like a central banker printing money. Its all fun and games until inflation shows itself.

If this has been posted already my apologies .

He holds all the leverage here. I can only imagine he wants total control. Especially when we have been so dysfunctional the last few years. Loomis isn’t giving anyone that. He’s facing the same issues that he had in the meetings with the cowboys. Thing for Mike is, he holds all the cards. He’d be fine with going home to Wisconsin and hanging out at his house I’m sure.

Wouldn’t surprise me if Loomis is still salty that MM chose GB over us in 05, even though it worked out great for both teams.

He only holds all the leverage if McCarthy is the top pick of the team and I'm not sure he is. I think right now, Moore is the top pick and he may have been ever since Glenn took the Jets job. If McCarthy was the top choice, it seems they would have interviewed him long ago and according to Underhill, it has been McCarthy's people lobbying to get him the job. If he sits out a year at his age, he may keep getting passed up for younger coordinators and never get another HC job.

And now it's hard for the team to afford eggs, much less a decent free agent.
Exactly, Some in here I know are in finance and you hear these CEO's sell you these projections for next quarter. The problem is all these projections are in a vacuum, a perfect world. When a hiccup happens , a good CEO prepared for this day and can sail his people out of the storm with no issues into calmer waters.

Then you have some CEO's that allowed a minor hiccup to cause a tremendous amount of damage. I see the man's vision and it worked for a while. Then covid came and said hold my beer.

Now we are at a point where we see if this GM can fix it or be forced into retirement forever known as the guy nobody wanted to come work for due to his mishaps. I am truly pulling for the guy as we all are. We all want the Saints to be successful. Its why we are die hard fans.

Disagree.

He holds all the leverage in his eyes. What I mean by that is I don’t think he would be too sad to not coach this year. So he holds all the cards from that angle. I didn’t mean all the cards to like leverage more money or anything. However, he absolutely can go in with the attitude of we are going to do it my way, or not at all. Which is likely exactly what happened.

He still going sign free agents , just like this

Year 1. 1 Mil towards cap
Year 2. 2 Mil Towards cap
Year 3. 15 Mil Towards Cap
Year 4. Void Year 50 Mil Towards cap

Man If they sign I dont care how they deal structure long as they ballin. Even if you sign to regular contract you still going have dead cap if they not good. More Cap dont = Better players. Its just more expensive players til they hit the field I seen alot big name players be trash and low level players ball out

What happens when they still aren't ballin in year 2 and they still have $65 million on the cap over the following two years. Well of course, just add some void years because we all know they can't afford to cut them and replace them with better players.

Maybe. But if he does not coach this year, he runs the risk of being a 62 year-old who has sat out a year and could get passed by for the hot young coordinators. Payton pulled it off, but he had the advantage of having resigned his job. McCarthy wasn't fired, but Jerry is going to spin it that way in NFL circles. Maybe people buy it. And even Payton had to settle for a job without a promising young QB. Denver wasn't a great job, outside of its ownership, until Payton turned it into a great job.

And even if he really is my way or I'm not taking it, he still has no leverage if Moore is the Saints' top choice. But I don't know if that's the case or not.

You really don't want to be a coach in your 60s sitting on the couch. One year becomes 2 years or more and all of a sudden you are watching "young" coordinators with a fraction of your experience and success get all the jobs while you are considered out of touch.
