Saints players and other key sports and public figures are angry at Drew Brees for his anthem comments (5 Viewers)

This is unrelated to the topic and I apologize in advance. But it goes with my point that people can't have their own opinion without getting so much backlash or losing their livelihood just because of their own stances or opinions. It is ridiculous.

But it’s important that people show empathy and love toward others. You have to be a little bit more sensitive when people are suffering emotionally. And who is suffering? We all are. In the past few months we’ve endured a historically unique challenge with COVID, then witness a horrific display of police brutality (which shook up America, and especially the African American community), then we have to live through countrywide riots. It’s just exhausting, and it’s completely reasonable for African Americans to be absolutely spent at this time. So why unnecessarily pile in? I’m not saying that the flag debate should forever be forgotten but there is a time and place for everything. I’m a bit disappointed that Drew decided to comment on the topic...it’s just not the time. But I don’t hate Drew, nor do I hate police officers, nor do I hate those who are rioting/looting. I’m a veteran, I love my country. And I believe that our country deserves a moment to breath and just develop a better understanding of everyone and more love.
Empathy and love goes two ways. My heart is filled with both. All I'm asking is to not do it during the anthem...and I'll stand (or kneel) with you. If you really want to unite people, you find compromise and consider the other side. In my case you're asking me to give up the one thing I find sacred. The one thing that I believe can be a rallying point. Just think if we all stood arm in arm, hand in hand, during the anthem, and kneeled, or cried,, etc., for the other 10,078 minutes of the week. Instead, the focus is fighting over 2 minutes. Let go of that 2 minutes and I'll bet you get what you are looking for....unless forcing people to accept kneeling during the anthem is the real goal.

Brees needs to say something else. Now.

It's kind of an unfortunate situation to be in for him. He has his opinion, and seems to be sticking to it.

He seems to be stuck on this flag thing and thinking it is disrespectful not for everyone to share his perspective of what 'unity' looks like.

What if unity looks like acknowledging our black brothers and sisters whose people still endure unspeakable discrimination?

Are people terrified that we may have to think about the fact that our country still has problems while engaging in an anthem that says 'we are all in this together'? I guess I'm starting to think this is more a hangup on ritual than actual history or 'respect'.

Serious question, why do people consider it disrespectful to kneel during the anthem? Kaep said it was actually an ex marines idea to kneel because it’s peaceful. Can you still kneel and love America? Once again this question is genuine curiosity, anyone who turns this into an argument other than a polite discussion to answer my question will just be ignored.
I served in color guards and honor guards throughout my navy career on base color guards, multi branch honor guards along side marines and airmen, the most prestigious of which was "The Admiral's Own" which was one in DC and we were assigned to perform at ceremonies the the Surgeon General of the Navy assigned us to (not to be confused with the Surgeon General of the U.S.). All that to say that I AM a subject matter expert, and I can tell you that their were MANY times we would do a rifle maneuver and end it by going to a knee for the National Anthem. The one I particularly remember was called the Queen Ann Salute, but there were others. SO, as a veteran, I have no problem with someone taking a knee during the National Anthem, its better than sitting.

I also wonder for those who think taking away the whole national anthem before games thing is unthinkable -- are they just as adamant about making schools stand for the pledge of allegiance again?

I don't know, man. I love this country more than any other, but I get a sense of contrived nationalism sometimes from all this.
That's another good point. Having players on the field during the anthem wasn't even a thing until 2009. The song itself is problematic for the hireling and slave content. I love this country enough to be critical of her and want her to be better.

Drew thought he was doing a Yahoo Finance piece and ish boiled over deep into football, and they knew his stance on the flag and what it was, that's why the question was specific about the kneeling...they go hand in hand on this issue in this instance. Either way Drew walked right into gave them what they wanted. The team already knew Drew's stance on the kneeling topic but I believe cantguardmike didnt expect Drew to be re-iterating that at this time. Ooof!! with Covid setbacks and now the protest questions, retirement anyone?!??:bandg:

D**n Drew and Drew Brees are trending on twitter...not the publicity we want

Man I want football without race. Seeing my QB trending because of his love of country shows whats wrong. Drew doesn't like racism, we know this. But drew is also very patriotic. The problem is that we are so divided as a nation that Patriots often get so caught up in patriotism, that they miss the point of civil unrest. Why can't we live in a world where people can not like each other but coexist under equal rights? I don't like looting and riots but I also don't like 3rd degree murder being the charge for 1st or 2nd degree murder when there is video backing it. I'll kneel to make that point and anyone who opposes it can kick rocks. I am a Patriot as well and have the scars of war to prove it. I love this country and would die for it which I damn near did. But I don't believe that the United States lives up to its values, if so, this wouldn't even be a topic of discussion.

I am not seeing the issue here. Where the disrespect of the flag is brought in here, is based on what he said. Did anyone actually listen to it? He said when he stands for the flag, he pictures his grandfathers and their sacrifice. Also (and this is the important part) the lives sacrificed during the civil rights movements. Drew feels that not standing for the flag is disrespectful to all those who sacrificed to keep it waving, in essence saying that, to him, if you don't stand for the flag, you are disrespecting all those who died in the civil right movement (as a part of a greater whole). He is saying that black lives that were sacrificed for freedom are also symbolized by the flag. Sounds a lot like he's saying black lives matter to me. I think lots of people are caught up in this social media/ TLDR world and didn't really listen to what he was saying.
Me personally, I am cool with kneeling prayerfully during the anthem. Not what I've seen in many of the games where people are on one knee but they have this look of disgust or nonchalance on their face....or maybe even worse, that look that says, "f this. hurry this s... up. I hate that I am forced to even be here." Before it's mentioned, yes, I also hate when people are talking or walking to their seats during the anthem, but maybe that's just me.

You don’t have to abandon your beliefs. Stand and put your hand on your heart during the anthem. But let others do what they may...convince them that your beliefs are also worthy of empathy through understanding and love.

Drew fell for it. You gotta stay out of this drama.
I disagree with you, It's not drama, its a problem that has been a issue since the ships arrived here in America. If everyone doesn't come together it's only going to get worst. Fitting how something that makes people feel uncomfortable is called "drama" or the " find another way" quote. lol
