But he was essentially the main character for over a decade. This is weird gimmick casting.

You have a chance to make a new and unique big bad in Doom and its immediately undercut with stunt casting.

What's lazy about hiring a great actor? They're going to have to explain why he looks like Iron Man, so to me that's the opposite of lazy. They're creating more work for themselves by hiring RDJ for a role that's not Iron Man.

Imagine the scene when Peter Parker sees Dr. Doom and he looks like Iron Man. And the jokes from Deadpool.

Except Doom's face never has to be - nor should be - seen. If we go with the comic version of Doctor Doom where he was disfigured in an explosion, that can simply be referenced and the mask never comes off.

I don't have any problem with that because that's how it was in the comics. I don't remember ever seeing his face and I don't believe they ever showed it. Even in the Fantastic Four comic from 1964 where they gave his origin story, his face was never shown. In the couple of panels featuring him before the explosion, we only saw the silhouette of his face in shadow.

He's been walking that back for the past year or so. Most people thought it meant he would appear as a Stark variant in Secret Wars, not...whatever this weirdness is.

And for what it's worth, I do not think this was the home run announcement they thought it would be. Most reactions on the various MCU subreddits I follow are either perplexed or outright hostile to the idea.

Actually, the perfect person to have played Doctor Doom would have been Christopher Lee, if he were still with us, but it took too long to get Doctor Doom and the Fantastic Four into the MCU.

And for the record, the lines to get into Hall H for the Star Trek, The Penguin, and MCU panels were insane. They had canopies outside that were completely packed and started to go around the back of the convention center. Just insane.

The Penguin looks great. Can't wait for that.

Who says he doesn't die in Secret Wars which is also supposed to reset everything and THEN we get the real Dr. Doom? Or rather the one that will stick around for 10-20 years?

I'd like to think that some of the language used here should assuage at least some concerns about the casting choice.
