The MCU Fantastic Four (1 Viewer)

Who says he doesn't die in Secret Wars which is also supposed to reset everything and THEN we get the real Dr. Doom? Or rather the one that will stick around for 10-20 years?

Even if that were the case, it would still underscore two major issues with the MCU right now: undercutting characters with variants and multiverse nonsense before they have a chance to establish themselves, and a total inability to move on from past successes.

I hate everything about this casting. Many other people do, too. The MCU has faced obstacles but I thought they might be able to right the ship. Then they do this as a panic move in the face of the Jonathan Majors fiasco. This may be their shark jumping moment. It's bad.

But, isn't Doom basically an evil Tony Stark? He's a genius, right? On the same level as Richards and Stark.
Intellectually yes but not personality wise

I meant playing the character full of Stark snark (ha!) and constant quips

I pictured Doom with a calm, calculating coldness (that actually a young Christopher Lee would have been perfect for)

Also Shawshank era Clancy Brown (who played lex Luther in Superman animated series)

Not really.

I mean, in terms of powerset/abilities he's basically a mashup of Iron Man and Doctor Strange. A technological genius on the level of Stark (probably higher, actually. He's more on Reed Richards level) and has a mastery of magic that has him as a potential candidate for Sorcerer Supreme.

But in terms of character and personality, no, they're not remotely similar at all.

An ambiguous euro aristocratic melancholy is central
There’s dozens of actors out there who would slip into that character effortlessly- RDJ is not one
And it’s why the move smacks of desperation

Yeah, it's the definition of a stunt born from panicked decision making.

Doom has been bungled every time they've tried to adapt him. People were finally excited about him getting a good adaptation and then they do this.

It has not resulted in the hype levels they thought it would. It's catching flack all over the place.

I'm genuinely perplexed by their thought process in this decision.

Bringing back the Russos? Great.
Swapping out Kang for Doom? Awesome.
Casting the face of your franchise for the better part of a decade as Doom instead of letting him be his own character? Dumb.

It's just perplexing. Even if we never see his face, we'll still hear his voice and think, "That's Tony Stark in there." on some level. Unless they modify his voice a bit, but then we come back to why do RDJ and not someone else? Which brings us back to stunt casting. And please, please, please don't come with a "twist" that he's an evil Tony Stark from another part of the multiverse and took on the name of Doom.

They actually went out of their way at the panel to say he's not an evil Stark variant, he's specifically Victor Von Doom. Which makes the casting even stranger.

2 out of 3 ain’t bad. :hihi:

And while I completely understand the apprehension about the casting choice, I’m not gonna write it off either. I think RDJ has a wide enough range and acting chops to play Doom. Since it appears they’ve already made their decision, I’m gonna wait and see what they do with it.

I mean, he wouldn’t be my first choice either, but it appears they’re gonna ride or die with him.

Honestly, I’d rather they revive Iron Man in a multiverse fix than have him play Doom. But it is what it is and Feige has more than earned the benefit of the doubt, although I’m sure people have wavered a bit, or even a lot, in their confidence in the franchise since Endgame, but I have no doubt they can recapture some of the magic that made them the juggernaut they are.

I don’t think anyone is arguing that RDJ will do a bad job - he’l do a fine job
It’s more about what this says about the overall tenor of marvel behind the scenes- and clearly it’s a panic move
It was like when Jameis got hurt any many clamored to resign Drew - Drew would have been fine for a few games, but it would have further stymied the transition the team desperately needed

It may be a panic move, or it may be that they wanted to get butts in the seats and RDJ would be an easy way to do it. And who knows, it might work. They have the team to pull it off with, so I’m gonna hold off judgement until we see what they come up with.

The difference is Brees’ shoulder was pretty much shot and wasn’t going to be the same QB. RDJ still has a decade if not more left in the tank in terms of acting. I get the comparison but they’re different.

Turns out his role in The Sympathizer was just prepping him to play every MCU role
