Saints The Saints signed S DJ Swearinger and released S T.J. Green (1 Viewer)

From a bleachereport article that I try to link to but the link shows up as blank media: The Arizona Cardinals have reportedly released starting safety D.J. Swearinger, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

The 28-year-old had started all four games for the team this season after being claimed off waivers late in 2018, but the organization decided to make a change Monday. The Cardinals fell to 0-3-1 on the season with a 27-10 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 4.

The Cardinals enter Monday ranked 29th in the NFL in points allowed and 30th in yards allowed.

Swearinger had played every snap for the team defensively in the first three games but allowed a 141.3 passer rating on 11 throws his way, according to Kyle Odegard of the team's official site. Despite his early struggles, he expected to turn things around Sunday.

Swearinger was signed to the roster after Karl Joseph was lost to the season with a Lisfranc injury that required surgery. He debuted in a 17-10 win over the Cincinnati Bengals where he generally played well, but was less effective in the three-game losing streak that followed, games in which he logged 35, 47 and 51 snaps.

I don't know about this guy, but he can play safety, has a lot of experience and it looks like we need one for now. I saw some criticisms of his vocal drawbacks (including criticizing teammate's effort, etc.) and drawing a lot of untimely penalties. It seems that he is a talented ballhawk, but his resume', at least this season, doesn't look so good.

In 2018 before we played the Redskins, Brees needed 200+ yards to break the passing yardage record. The Skins were giving up the fewest passing yards at about 180+ per game. One of their secondary players was talking about not letting the record happen on their watch. Was that Swearinger? Maybe Josh Norman?

Of course, that record dropped in the second quarter with the pass to our rookie T. Smith.

Yep that was Swearinger. Told the media Brees wouldn't get the record. Brees didn't get the memo.

I can only speak for myself that the problem is, at a glance, that's a lot of initials all at once -- S DJ and S TJ -- to decipher.

But also, I had no idea we had a player named, apparently, T.J. Green.

Hence, my first thought was, Huh?

Well, let me mansplain it to you, little lady...

[ducking for cover]

:hihi:

He's been good but he's also been known to get a 15 yard penalty just at the wrong moment.

I keep hearing he's a "dirty player" "penalty machine" or like you said, "he's been known to get a 15 yard penalty at the wrong moment"

And my first thought is: It doesn't matter... he's a Saint now. Those penalties are going to come regardless. FIRST DOWN OTHER TEAM!

The only thing I see in common with most of the teams he's been on is they've consistently been bottom-tier teams with shaky or questionable leadership at best, whether it'd be at the HC position or front office.
  • 2013: Texans (2-14) - started 10 games
  • 2014: Texans (9-7) - started 12 games
  • 2015:
    • Buccaneers (6-10) - primarily played special teams with 21.7% of ST snaps to only 10.1% defensive snaps
    • Cardinals (13-3) - promoted from practice squad after Tyrann Mathieu went on IR, only played in four games and started 1
  • 2016: Cardinals (7-8-1) - started 12 games, had 3 INT and a FF
  • 2017: Redskins (7-9) - started all 16 games, 4 INT and a FF
  • 2018: Redskins (7-9) - started 15 games, 4 INT and 3 FF
  • 2019:
    • Cardinals (4-9-1) - started 4 games before being released, Cardinals went 0-3-1
    • Raiders (6-8) - signed when the Raiders were 5-4, started 3 games, played in 4, Raiders went 1-3 after signing him
If I were him, I wouldn't have been very happy on struggling teams either. Thankfully we're presently in a far better position than every one of those teams above except maybe the 2015 Cardinals which were a solid unit that year.

I also notice that like Janoris Jenkins, he's never played in a playoff game. Something we can provide both of them with.

Oh yeah? well what does PFF say? lol

One thing is for sure. Coach P don't put up with no crap. But even if Sean don't get him in line, one of our locker room leaders will whack him with their crutches.

I hope he plays great and makes us better, like we all do.

Hahaha, I don't have access to PFF but I do remember him making a handful of plays against us. Enough for him to be mildly annoying. :hihi:

And absolutely, how strong our leadership under Payton is the reason why I think we're making these moves that in any other year we'd likely never even consider. They were frustrated with their situations and grew tired of losing and we could use players of their skill sets with the recent rash of injuries we've had.

Same with Suggs who we also put a claim in for and Kansas City got, although he's never really been a "problem child" and could've used a veteran presence at off that weak side end with Davenport going down. Another crazy thing is Davenport and Okafor both went down the same week and us and the Chiefs both went after the same player to play in their absences.

One funny thing about us claiming Janoris Jenkins though is the day he was waived, I was listening to Strief and Deuce on WWL and a few callers were asking about the likelihood of us claiming him and Strief was very adamant that there was no possible way we'd claim him due to character concerns. I understood where he was coming from (and I was a bit doubtful myself) and I love Strief but he definitely has a little egg on his face after that one. But there's nothing wrong with that, we're all wrong from time to time... unless you're a married man, then you're wrong all the time. :hihi:

Im good if he’s considered a dirty player, better on our team than the team we play. Tired of seeing saints players getting taken out in important games by dirty hits. Maybe we can turn the table on the other team, sweep the leg.

This could be what Payton's thinking too.

From what I’ve read so far, he was pretty good last year but not good this year. He wasn’t on a team long enough to really get settled in though.

Either way, I think it’s just a depth signing and I like it. It’s not like he’s going to come in and ruin the team.

He better not and I don't think he will. I don't like what he said about Mike Thomas but I understand he was upset about being beaten badly and being on a bad team but he needs to come in and apologize to him for that. Our locker room is great and I don't think Payton would allow anyone to mess it up esp after what we dealt w/ before. Plus, we just signed him so it's easy to get rid of him if he becomes a distraction.

Now, he is a good player but I hope we don't really see much of him b/c CGJ and Vonn Bell will be back where we won't need him that much unless the dude just balls out at practice and you have to have him on the field.
