The Taysom Hill deal was for 21 million dollars! (2 Viewers)

It really isn't a lot. It's a 2 year deal, and it's a good price considering he'll more than likely be our starting QB in 2021.
He has ZERO career touchdown passes. This makes him the second highest backup in the league. This is also a terrible for a WR/RB with 9 career touchdowns. Also good to remember that the guy will turn 30 this year. Awful deal.

Taysom is the 6th highest paid Saint now and the third highest guaranteed per year. He is also the 21st highest paid QB in the NFL.

If no other teams were interested then how did he leverage the Saints into paying him $17,000,000 for one extra year?

I don't think he "leveraged" the Saints...I don't think the Saints are desperate enough to be at the mercy of Hill and his "potential" especially when again a franchise QB drops in their hands in Winston, if anything is say the Football gods keep smiling on the saints by having Franchise ready QB in their prime becoming available as they trasition from a franchise QB in Drew Brees, the only team I can see as fortunate were the 49ers from the 80's (Montana to Young) and the Packers and Colts respectively from Farve to Rodgers and Manning to Luck.

Hate all you want but Jameis is going to light it up in NO and people are going to be upset because they wanted Taysom to be the guy but just like Bridgewater, Winston will prove to be the better man under center despite Hills physical talent ...Bridgewater like Winston will prove to be the better man for the job.
You can’t even consider Hill the backup QB. Brees goes down last year and there was NO doubt who was going in... same deal this year. This is a waste of cap space in Drew’s (potential) last year.

Talk about negotiating against yourself.

I disagree. Those are minimum type contracts. He was the 8th lowest snap count last year and now the 2nd highest paid skill position player.

For this to be worth the money he either needs to start at QB in 2021 or be on the field a ton more.

Snap Counts:

Michael Thomas

Josh Hill
649
Alvin Kamara
626
Ted Ginn
607
Jared Cook
502
Tre'Quan Smith
458
Latavius Murray

Taysom Hill

Let's be fair, not many people on the planet that have ever lived can run the offense like Drew... that's why he's Drew. The offense will be different when Taysom takes over... and will have the possibility to be even more dynamic because of what Taysom brings as a threat to run or pass, and his ability to extent plays / makes plays when something breaks down and ad-lib.

The signing of Winston is for this season... There is no sense in making Taysom the #2 this year with Drew here.... It's pretty simple, if Drew has to miss a few games for any reason... You have a 2 QB system where Taysom and Winston split the duties, and you can still use Taysom is the role hew had last season... If Drew is out for the year for some reason, Taysom is your starter and Winston is your backup.
That is a WILD take.

He's worth what we are paying him just to play TE, H-Back, special teams, and run the Read Option, even if he had no skills to be a QB. So, I would just ignore those guys.

well if you average it out it comes to 10-11mil/yr. What kind of production would you expect out of someone for that kind of money? He had less than 400 total yards and 7 touchdowns last year. As a comparison a guy like Mark Ingram made half of that last year and has 1600 yards and 16 touchdowns. I’ll add in that in his media availability he said he was going to be cutting back on his roles. He probably won’t be playing special teams. He’s going to focus on quarterback more and work into the offense more.I think he needs to be an every down offensive player to justify 10mil/yr.

Forget getting in 10 or so plays a game. That kind of money means he's gonna be playing a whole lot more.

Again, Taysom Hill answered this question during his media availability. He said that the plan was to use him the way the was used in the Minnesota playoff game.

Um he did it all in that game? The real question is in what ratio?

He got 7 touches in that game. 4 carries 50 yards, 2 receptions 25 yards 1Td, 1 pass 50 yards.

I mean it's an average of $8 million per year guaranteed so I think that's the fair number to really look at. We don't really know if the other $5 million over two years is salary or bonuses that he won't reach unless he ends up playing full time QB in year two. And, yeah, Mark Ingram was a great value for his production that year. It's why he wanted a lot more money.

But, what he said in his media availability is that his work load this year would look a lot like it did in the Vikings playoff game. I don't have any issue paying a guy that does that much per game what he is getting. Add to that the fact that he can also play QB and it's potentially a really great value for the team. But, even if he never plays full time QB in the next two years, it's still not a bad deal for the team. He's basically being paid like a good TE which he probably could be if he concentrated on that position. But, he's also a guy that can give you 8 to 10 carries per game in the read option.
