Easy to armchair qb (center back?) this now, but surely the insane number of minutes played pulse Salah and Mane’s travel had to have an effect

And being on the doorstep of a quad and then getting 2 minorish ones, that’s gotta be🫤

Tends to usually lead to very bland finals due to the amount of games these players play.

Which this now has piqued my thinking for the WC.

Historically, playing in June/July, just weeks after most major leagues conclude, has players pretty fatigued mentally and physically. Leading to very tentative, low scoring matches.


This year, playing in November, which is usually 2 months into league play, fresh minds, fresh legs, may very well lead to some of the best soccer we will see.

Another thing I thought of after match - wonder what effect the 30 minute delay had - Liverpool came out like a house afire in the first 20’ and then flattened noticeably. Would they have had 5-10 more minutes of juice if they started on time?
They still might not have gotten anything passed Courtois, but I have to wonder

The sheer number of games had to have taken a toll - out of the 63 games theoretically possible to play, Liverpool played 63 this season. Still only lost four!

As for it being a bit of a letdown only winning the two domestic cups after the potential of four trophies, sure, but not as much as could be. Liverpool, and its supporters, tend to be pretty cheerful regardless of circumstance anyway. Plus there'd been a bit of a trophy drought recently - until the 2018/19 Champions League, it was just the league cup in 2011/12 since... 2006? So that puts it in perspective.

And generally, I think Liverpool supporters are just loving it at the moment. Winning the quad would have been ridiculous. But just being that good to make it that far and winning a double? Still fantastic. There was a parade on Sunday (for the two cups, and for the Championship for the Women's team, but also a bit for the league win in 2019/20 when a parade wasn't possible), and you wouldn't think it was for a team that lost one final the night before (https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/pictures-liverpools-end-season-city-parade).

That said, the final match itself was a bit of a weird one, for reasons outside the game. I used to go to a fair few games at Anfield before our first child was born, and I still follow a fair few other supporters on Twitter, and some other LFC and football related accounts. So in the build up to the game, I was seeing a lot of tweets about crowd organisation problems, turnstiles not being opened, supporters being tunneled through narrow passages, people with legitimate tickets not being let in, people being mugged, then tear gas and pepper spray being used on crowds including children. So that was a real damper on the mood for the game itself. Then afterwards, more accounts of assaults and muggings.

By all accounts (including general media ones, not just LFC ones), with the exception of certain French authorities who are blatantly trying to cover their own arses, the organisation was a shambles that could have been a disaster. A few examples of many:

This guy had his ticket and phone stolen on the way to the stadium:


The Mayor of Liverpool was also robbed:


The wife and son of Jason McAteer (ex LFC player) were assaulted and robbed:


The game itself was basically Liverpool vs Courtois, with Courtois winning of course. And speaking of class from Courtois, with regard to the above, I thought this was a nice touch:

What a game from Courtois. I thought for sure Liverpool would have had at least 2 in the first half alone with the way things looked early on.

I didn't like the offside call on Benzema either but guess it's how the rules are written. Read a breakdown of how VAR looked at it. There were actually 5 different aspects of the play they had to examine, so that's why it took so long.

Benzema has to win the ballon d'Or now, right?

Kinda curious to see how Brazil handle things on their RW spot now with Vini Jr coming on so strongly this season. When does he supplant Neymar?

RM's run to this UCL title has to be up there with the most difficult. PSG, Chelsea, Man City and then Liverpool? All while many were doubting their quality. Ancelotti did a great job managing the various pieces. And I think the veteran guys like Benzema, Modric, Kroos, Carvajal, Courtois just relied on their experience from past UCLs.

After seeing some of the tweets re: Paris pickpockets, i went on and told the wife n kids when we go to paris July 1, no watches, no phones on person. Ill carry as i ordered this cross-body carryall that i will wear under my shirt.

Granted, we shouldnt be standing in throngs of people, but i certainly am taking no chances.

What a black eye for an otherwise supposedly fun-filled, once in a lifetime event for some.

The really sad part is this wasnt some 2nd tier stadium- this was THE Stade de France- How UEFA and French authorities didnt have a plan to have a massive presence is beyond me. However, reading that one story, for them to conduct a raid the very next morning and be successful, they knew who the perps were. ( prior to event )

Admittedly I haven’t seen a lot of Brazil in competition, but hasn’t he been a super-sub lately?

Interesting thing about the Benz non-call is that I don’t think that’s what the flag went up for
It’s something I wish both NBA and NFL would do - if you see an infraction on video, even if it wasn’t the exact play in review- call it

I hadn't kept up with Brazil's national team lately.. Just thinking aloud that they've got a good problem to have.

that'll be good for commutes but what sort of commie schedules this over mardi gras - Napoli celebrates (not sure about RM)??

anyway, this might be Napoli's year - they're curb stomping Serie A while others like Bayern, PSG and RM are in actual battles in their leagues

I think it always starts the second Tuesday of February.
