By Rod Walker

Typically, it’s all about football around the Brees household. That’s what you’d expect when the man of the house is one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history.

But as Drew Brees found out last week, football is apparently starting to lose a little ground to fútbol.

A trip to the barbershop last week proved it.

“My son went to get a haircut a couple days ago and he told the lady, ‘I want it to look like Cristiano Ronaldo,’ ” Brees said. “So we have Cristiano Ronaldo running around the house right now. One of them wants to be (Lionel) Messi and one wants to be somebody else. So we have the World Cup well-represented in our house right now.”

So expect Brees, as well as some of his teammates in the New Orleans Saints locker room, to tune in Thursday when soccer’s Super Bowl — the World Cup — begins. ...

The New Orleans Saints running back room again featured practically only Alvin Kamara in terms of production in 2024. Kamara had his most productive year since 2020, as he set a career high in rushing yards and had his most rushing touchdowns and best YPC in the last four seasons. Kamara also caught 68 passes for 543 yards and 2 TDs, proving once again that he is one of the best all-around running backs in the NFL, and has been since his rookie year.

Sadly, Kamara’s season ended on a down note, as an unfortunate injury cost him his first career 1,000 yard rushing season as he was forced...

What DT Davon Godchaux brings to the Saints

Last season, the New Orleans Saints ranked almost dead last in run defense. Opponents would control games with their respective rushing attacks, and because the Saints had to focus so much effort on stopping this, the pass defense was being exposed. Having a league-low run defense will prevent a team from winning many games, and if New Orleans wanted to win games in 2025, this needed to change. In addition, the Saints needed a nose tackle for Brandon Staley’s scheme, but before today, that player was not on the roster. The Saints knew this, and before the legal tampering period opened, New...

Saints extend defensive tackle Nathan Shepherd

The New Orleans Saints have not made any contract agreements with free agents so far, but other moves have still been made. Dante Pettis has been re-signed, Davon Godchaux was traded for, and now, per Josina Anderson, the Saints have given DT Nathan Shepherd a 1-year extension.

Shepherd may have not have the best season last year, so this may be a bit surprising, but keeping him as a depth piece is wise. Also, with Shepherd’s previous cap number slated to be around $7 million next season, an extension should bring down that number. It will be interesting to see Shepherd’s role in Staley’s...

The New Orleans Saints have agreed to a deal with defensive end Chase Young, keeping him in New Orleans, per Jordan Schultz. It’s a three-year contract worth up to $57 million with $27 million at signing.

Young was signed to a one-year prove-it deal with the Saints in 2024. The 25-year-old edge rusher outplayed his $13 million contract, ranking top-10 in the league in quarterback pressures and top-five in hurries. Young ended the season with 5.5 sacks and appeared in all 17 games.

The Saints remained interested in extending Young after hiring defensive coordinator Brandon Staley, who...
