So honestly how will you feel if Payton eventually ends up coaching the Cowboys? (1 Viewer)

Cowher was a winner but I don't think he had the same spark as Payton did when he retired. I'm sure he could have still had a job somewhere if he wanted one, but I believe he was viewed as a coach that needed to go.
Maybe, idk. But I'm pretty sure Cowher has rejected multiple offers to coach again in the last 10 years. He's turned them all down as far as I know.

I wish I could trust to this. Them allowing Payton to take a year off is going to reduce his trade value, even though it shouldn't because we all know what he's actually worth. I feel like they're setting this all up to make it easier for the next team to trade for him.
This right here. Anyone expecting a kings ransom will be disappointed. If he had gone straight to another team, yes, they could have demanded a few picks, like the Jets got for Belichek or the Raiders got for Gruden.

But after he sits out a year -- during which time the Saints will have hired a new coach -- they won't be able to do that. We'll be lucky to get as much as a third round pick, if that.

Maybe the Chargers if they don't get Herbert to the playoffs soon.

The difference here I think is that Payton would be far more valuable to the Cowboys than Arians was to the Bucs at the time. I think the Saints have enough leverage to get some substantial compensation.

I don’t care. He was a great coach for us and did an outstanding job this year. He may get back into coaching. Hopefully, we can beat him if he does.
My thoughts exactly. Who am I to hold it against a former Saints coach or player if they choose to further their career elsewhere? These people don’t owe us this undying loyalty to disclose their future plans or design their plans around whether or not some folks who cheered for them at one point are going to be upset.

TBF the Cards ownership are the same people that have unjustly claimed the 1925 NFL championship over the Pottsville Maroons despite the latter's victory over the Cards in what was billed as the "championship game." I worry that Gayle Benson and Mickey Loomis might not have the same desire to wring every advantage out of the situation that the Bidwills do.

He's definitely more valuable, the problem is that the leverage will be diminished once the Saints have a new coach in place.

Say in a year Payton says, "Okay, I'm refreshed and ready to coach again." The Saints will have his rights, but with another coach under contract (and potentially a whole new staff) it seems their options would be to either (1) say to Payton "you have to come back to us" and dump the new coach (and pay off the rest of his contract) to force Payton to return against his wishes or (2) to honor Payton's contract to retain the rights to him but effectively pay him $15 million a year not to coach.

Either way you're looking at paying a lot of money, all in the interest of throwing up a roadblock against the greatest coach in team history to prevent him from moving on with his life and pursuing future opportunities. I just don't see that happening.

Exactly. They'll work out compensation, but it will likely be underwhelming.

I get what you're saying, but the Saints can always take their ball and go home so to speak. They could simply not let Payton off the hook until 2024. I don't know that they would do that, but they would still have some leverage. Certainly less than now though.

I do think Patyon taking a break for 22 is legitimate and that it's a definite possibility he's done with coaching. Time will tell I suppose.

Just putting this out there. What If McCarthy somehow takes the Cowboys to an NFC Championship game next season (very possible) then this is all a mute point and time to move on to other options.

If it's because he has a new much younger wife who might want children and doesn't like New Orleans, and might not want him coaching, I get it. TV is a much easier gig for a man with young kids, and Payton knows because he's been there ... On the flip side, I won't be surprised if and when he coaches there. I'll hate the Cowboys even more if he coaches them, but if it's going to happen, let it happen now and get a No. 1 and No. 2 for him and move on to trying to become a better team in both the short- and long-term future.

That feeling when your high school sweetheart leaves, saying she just needs a break from relationships to think about her future, then later goes and marries a doctor. That would probably be a similar feeling. Lol.

I would feel so much better if he was taking a year off and coming back to us. Not quite ready to let him go yet. Also, truth be told I don't think he's 100% ready to leave coaching for good.

I think that's true as well. I think he gave everything he had and is ready for a break and honestly doesn't know how he will feel in a year. He may get the itch back, but he also may find that he likes getting away from the grind and enjoying the fruits of his labors.

Either way, it was a great ride and I wish him well!

If he has ulterior motives to take a year off just so he can go coach another team after next year, if basically he wants out of the Saints orginization, then he needs to Man up. If thats his goal is to coach after a year off then i am glad he left because he obviously didn't want to be here.
Just Like with Les Miles and Coach O at LSU, thanks for the wins and the Championship, but don't let the door hit you in the arse on the way out...
Hopefully i am very wrong and he'll be an analysts or a broadcaster and be happy there...
