2022--The Year We Move Up for a QB (4 Viewers)

This is my prediction. In the 2022 draft, the Saints will trade up in the first round to pick a quarterback. And if there is a quarterback Payton really likes, they will pay whatever price they have to pay to move up. My own favorite is Matt Corral of Ole Miss. Other quarterbacks listed as first-round possibilities are Carson Strong of Nevada. Malik Willis of Liberty, Sam Howel of North Carolina, and Spencer Rattler of Oklahoma.

But there are two types of teams in the NFL: Those that have a franchise quarterback and those that don't. The Saints currently fall in the latter category. Come 2022, we will fall in the former category.
Great idea, let's trade up for a rookie QB and have him throw to our wonderful group of receivers. I'm sure that will work wonderfully!!

Ideally we’re able to trade for someone like Russell Wilson. But if we can’t and Payton really likes one of the draft prospects we could make the move.

WR is the biggest need on the team right now. I’d love to see our first two picks used on WRs for a change instead of relying on post-draft FA rookie WRs to turn into serviceable receivers every single year. Drafting another QB to develop with the first pick doesn’t fill the hole at WR and won’t make the current active receivers better. We have a injury-prone superstar WR with no WR1/WR2 level playmakers behind him. WR is stalling the offense and should be the biggest priority next offseason.
Sorry, but I ain’t got the time to EVEN start looking at next year yet! 😂 Yeah, we’re ALL butthurt about losing a very winnable game yesterday. But we’re 2-2, with lotsa football, n at LEAST another 13 games, left to play! Let’s see what happens!

For example, one of the biggest complaints about our receivers so far this year was their inability to get separation. IMO there was some solid improvement in dat area yesterday, n it was a big reason why Jameis easily had his best passing day as a Saint so far! But it was only one game.

So IMO, one of the big “look fors” this week against Washington is to see whether their play against NY was jus an anomaly, or are Jameis n his receivers finally starting to jell a lil bit!

We’ll see!

Jameis Winston is on pace (my ballpark numbers) 3500yds 28TDs 12Ints. In his current state he is worth 25 to 30 million next year if he doesn't take another snap. We will be drafting a qb next year because simply we can't afford him. We need to start over at the position and continue to rebuild. This team is playing really well in a de facto rebuild year.

There's the voice of reason.

No Qb in next year's draft is a better prospect than Winston.

WR will Most likely to be filled with a free agent before the draft.

I expect that the usual suspects of injury prone players like Armstead, Peat, and Davenport will be the positions they try to add depth to in the draft.

Another middle linebacker to replace Kwon and possibly defensive end to replace Jordan and or Davenport.

And so why would Payton move up for a QB? Because you think so? Payton has had ample opportunities to move up in the draft, the past 3-4 years to draft a QB and didn’t. And those QB’s you mentioned, none of which are what one would describe the type to move up for. Especially, Rattler. Good grief.

Corral? What did he do against a high caliber defense, in Alabama? He probably is the Heisman front runner, but he “ain’t” all that, as far as being a high NFL draft prospect. We’ll see.

You are probably going to get cut up for this. 😂

Not a single QB has even close to Winston potential. Winston has looked good this year so far.

Would like to know who you consider the franchise QBs. I would hope Mathew Stafford is on that list. This is his 13 year in the league but has had a similar till Winston at this Point.
One thing almost every franchise QB has is a good deep ball. Not many QBs have a better deep ball than Winston.
Yes we have not been passing much but this week winston showed what he can do. 1 nice long ball to Calloway and another Deep TD that got taken off the board due to the Holding on trautman.

Everyone thinks Sean doesn't trust Jameis. He may not but no one really knows. He may not trust the banged up o-line or the fact we lack receivers. Think it has more to do with the line. A few times in the patriots we had 7 or 8 guys stay in to block.

What people don't understand yes 30 int is alot but that is 30- 50 bad decisions to fix. If Sean is half the coach we think he is he can fix that.

The guy is just 27 now. If Sean gets him to be the player he wants him to be over the coarse of the season, He could be our qb for years to come. Of course we would have to resign him.
Its puzzling isnt it? You have a number 1 draft pick, that led his team to a National title, with all the tools and can throw for miles accumulating season leading TD passing.

Kwon is not a MLB. And Peat, Armstead and Davenport, all may be gone this off season via trade. I would not be upset with this. For one, Hurst is very adequate in Armstead’s absence. And Peat, Clapp is ready to take his spot, and or Throckmorton, once McCoy returns and Ruiz moves back to right guard. The money the Saints will save will allow them to sign Marcus Williams and CJGJ long term. Jordan may be his last year. Davenport should not be paid big money. Sorry, he has the physical presence, just not reliable for a full season of games.

Given the nearly universal acclaim the original post has received, I wish to remind all that this is a forum for robust discussion, within defined bounds, and that I welcome dissenting views.

If you look at the media draft books at this time, the quarterbacks are not listed high. You may see Corral and occasionally Willis or Strong in the top 10 selections. But as the draft approaches, there might be two or so quarterbacks in the draft who will move up. And my premise is based on my assumptions (1) that the Saints will conclude after the 2021 season that they do not have on the roster a quarterback who is good enough to win a championship, and (2) that there will likely be at least one quarterback who has physical assets greater than Book's and whom Sean Payton really likes.

I currently do not know a great deal about Carson Strong at Nevada or Malik Willis at Liberty. Howell at North Carolina has not had a great season. Rattler at Oklahoma does not seem to have the physical attributes that would warrant high first-round selection. I do believe that Corral will be a very high pick. He does not have great size, but he has a really good arm, mobility, and the type of athletic arrogance Aaron Rodgers has. I do believe there will be teams looking to trade up in the first round to pick Corral. To say he will have an Aaron Rodgers career would be absurd because Aaron Rodgers may be the most physically talented quarterback, and is arguably the best quarterback (he never had the talent around him that Brady or Manning in particular had) of his generation and Corral is still taking snaps in Oxford. But except for size, there are similaries between the two.

If there's one thing we know about Payton, it's that he will rarely take a chance at drafting a QB. Since he came on, we have drafted 4 guys:

Sean Canfield (7th, 2010)
Garrett Griffin (3rd, 2015)
Tommy Stevens (7th, 2020)
Ian Book (4th, 2021)

Canfield was a camp body, Griffin was a waste, and Stevens was picked to play another position mainly. Book has a chance to be on this team for the long haul. He played three years in college and is very underrated. There was a reason we kept him on the roster instead of the practice squad. In reality, if we wanted to invest in a QB, we would have done so over the last few years with the abundance of talent that has been developed.

New angle on this topic...

If we end the year having won enough games that we'd have to move up in the draft to get a QB, we won't move up to get a QB.
If we end the year having lost enough games to NOT need to move up to get a QB, we might draft a QB... probably won't, but we "might".

It all depends on our record. 5-12, picking ninth? yes we move up for a QB.
Winston can still turn this thing around though. He had a good game against the Giants. I don't think he's done improving. Week 15 is probably when we can start having this conversation not week 5
