Doesn't look like the federal government learned much since 2005. It is crazy how this country with all our resources cannot properly respond to disasters.

I can promise you, they could be doing way more. They could be far better prepared and they are going to botch the response at every turn. Then when the private side saves the day they will take all credit. They learned plenty-
It ends up being the State to handle logistics - not the FEDS. Hence the North Carolina National Guard now with over 500 men and 200 vehicles on the ground in the affected region. The airlifts have already begun ( supplies ) and they have been performing search and rescue operation since Saturday.
What else would you like the Federal Government to do actually? You want them to send in 2500 people ( who also needs supplies - food/water/gas ) that dont know the area as well as "local/regionals" do and take up resources that would otherwise go to affected residents?
You have 20 small helicopters operating out of Hickory NC....think Hickory NC air traffic control is equipped to handle the air traffic of 20 small helicopters and all the other small planes in the area?
The Federal government approved disaster relief for NC the day of storm. ( and it has to be requested by Governor ). Furthermore, that gives the State a "blank check" ( if you will ) to bring all it can to bear.
But the FIRST item of business is to ASSESS the damages, the infrastructure that remains and figure out where you gonna land cargo planes? Smaller planes? Helicopters? How to traverse the landscape? Where is best spot to set up 'base camp" to unload and distribute supplies ? how to access higher elevation residents who are all but cut off ?
100s of other issues need resolution before you just go slamming an area with massive amounts of supplies while you have no way of distributing, reaching the affected. Then you would have photos circulating the internet of "FEMA supplies JUST SITTING"
Im curious as to what you think the Federal Government should have done? ( and if it gets political- which im sure it will at some point- feel free to start a thread on the MAP board to discuss )
here is a twitter thread regarding exactly what is happening with NC Nat Guard since storm -

This is disaster response and that is how it works. Thinking this time will be any different is insane.
At least they haven't gone full Florida yet by shutting down airspace and blaming the media.
No, I'm saying that FEMA and most charity groups are a giant grift and tax shelter creating a massive ecosystem of waste and fraud without adequately serving the population it was designed to help.are you saying the Federal Government should take the lead in each state with regards to the entire operation?
Maybe we should create, within FEMA, a designated "lead" for each state- someone familiar with that State and the local governments to coordinate disaster response between the Federal and State government? Declaration of a "disaster emergency" already removes bureaucratic red tape.
So im still trying to figure out what folks want the FEDs to do in a situation such as this? ( outside of what has already started to happen )
How does the Federal Government position supplies? Based on what info? Where? Wouldnt that be better off selected by State leaders familiar with the landscape?
Why arent Governors having Disaster task forces in charge of this?
Its a no win situation for the FEDS- damned if you do, damned if you dont. Shoot, what if they positioned 20 tons of supplies in a warehouse in downtown Asheville, in anticipation, only to have it washed away? Or higher up in elevation, only to have the only access road washed out? Some things simply are better left to State and Locals to figure out. FEDS dont have enough "local knowledge " to pull this off.
Hence the reliance on folks to band together and work in CONJUNCTION with/supplement the State and Federal response- because at the end of the day, arent we also responsible for helping our neighbor in need? ( Or do we sit back and say - nah- let the FEDS deal with- i pay my taxes )
I cant expect the Federal government to have 5 boats on the Tchefuncte river in the event the river overflows its banks- but i know 5 people with boats in Madisonville that do. Thats kinda my point.
OofJust saw a post that someone I grew up with in Mandeville lost her brother to the storm when he was swept away at his house in the mountains outside of Asheville. They went to every Saints game in Carolina for as long as they lived there.

How do we fix it? You build infrastructure for 1000 year floods, quit building in flood plains, bury power lines, build to strict codes along the coast and build with the foresight of climate change.
The Federal flood insurance program is a disaster. It has subsidized stupidity for 70 years and as a country we've refused to update our infrastructure. We chose to go the far more costly and miserable route. The good news, all these disasters stimulate the economy because big business is there to capitalize on all the government spending.
If they ever use common sense like Japan did then I would be out of a job.
If a giant storm was headed toward my house I would fully expect the government to show up after the house got hit and is on fire then throw a bunch of money at it. It absolutely is the American way.I'll just touch on NFIP for a moment since I'm on cell.
NFIP was born out necessity. Because here in the US, we tend to "ready, fire, aim" and then left with figuring out how to mitigate existing issue instead of scrapping it all and starting over. It's the American way. Infrastructure be damned. Water sheds? Who cares. What could possibly happen in our lifetime.
Western North Carolina.
Cedar key
Marathon Fl.
9th ward. Lakeview.
Paradise CA.
Boulder FiFL.
Etc etc.
We tend to ignore the obvious warnings nature continually throws our way all for the sake of development and the dollar.
So then we have to find a way to mitigate those risks because so many people now live in an area of exposure.
It's a shame that we haven't figured it out by now and I don't know we ever will because the horse that dictates is just too far from the barn.
