No, that's just the excuse. Florida did the same thing after Ian, blamed media and drones for the lack of response. Is it not because of all the aviation that’s going on there now?
Sounds like an individual authority figure making a bad choice. There has been substantial private aviation support on the search and rescue - there’s numerous videos online and dozens of private aircraft in the air on flightradar throughout the day. Cajun Navy is there with aviation and I donated to a WNC aviation group.
He even says that he was able to perform rescues before that interaction. It was Sunday, which was still pretty early - sounds like that one fire chief was on a power trip and not seeing the big picture. Probably has since changed his tune.
What authority does a local fire chief have anyway to tell a private aviator to stop?
I wonder if/when a "state of emergency" is declared in an area for the State, that gives them the ability to halt certain activities that might interfere with what the State authorities/officials are attempting to do in some sort of orderly ( safer ) fashion.
Which, Sunday, as you mentioned, wasnt the time to be worried about "Being in charge of coordinating" - but i can understand from the person in charge of coordinating response.
IF they drop them off at another location, now the Chief might be allocating resources to those very people who are no longer in need, but the Chief has no idea. Wasting time and resources when they were already down the mountain.
So, whats the reason storm victims this time around get 750$ from FEMA when we got 2k + and a fema trailer here during Katrina in 05?
People even got trailers in the river parishes after Ida.
Yeah I suppose that there’s an emergency management system with local response commanders with authority.
But even if the idea is concern that a separate rescue may make their own rescue efforts less efficient because they go to places with people already rescued, the answer is open direct communication – not telling them to stop.
None but one call to the FAA and they take his word over the world and a TFR went up immediately after.Sounds like an individual authority figure making a bad choice. oh fully agree- that moment the Chief should have said " go here, we are coordinating with local pilots " - but my guess is he wasnt even thinking that far ahead.
Not making excuses for this guy, but you have been Fire Chief for however many years in a relatively quiet/peaceful area of North Carolina....never seen ANYTHING like this, and all of a sudden you are thrust into a position that you simply arent equipped to handle, in THAT moment.
I cant imagine the amount of "what now" running thru his head Sunday - not knowing much and getting updated bad news probably every 15 min.

I'd love to think this is a one time issue but law enforcement, particularly in small towns have a lot of Cartmans every day. It's this insane culture that has been allowed to grow like a tumor. And for what it's worth, the guy is a fire chief, but he's also a human being that likely had his home and the home of everyone he knows destroyed. Not to mention that the way of life he had in that little tourist town is likely over. So, he likely was not thinking particularly straight and likely had very little sleep while all this was happening. It was a bad decision, but those happen in those situations. I don't envy the people who are expected to be fully functional at times like those and I don't expect that a fire chief in Lake Lure ever expected anything close to this to happen.
