This is the kind of thing many people went through. They were in their homes and as the water got worse and worse, they became cut off from being able to walk away - so they were entirely at the mercy of their home’s foundation. If it gave way, it became an urgent emergency. Luckily this person had a life jacket and was able to get clear and get to land. I think many did not end up so fortunate. And I’m sure in many cases it happened more quickly and violently than this video. And at night.

I’m pretty sure this is what happened to the guy from Mandeville that died - I also just learned that he was roommates with one of my best friends (groomsman in my wedding).

That was insane to watch this early in the am.

Cannot stress how lucky both were to have "obstructions" ( a tennis court fence ) to slow the current and allow them to swim toward the bank. Had it not been for that fence/court, no telling where they would have ended up.

Unbelievable act of selflessness by that man. Not all heroes wear capes.

The water vapor time lapse shows just how much the region was already getting before Helene joined up.

I know the feeling of hopelessness/helplessness as you stand in your house as the water comes in. I was in my house when Hurricane Isaac pushed two feet of Lake Maurepas into my house. But, it was slow and wasn't life threatening. We just felt like we were going to be stuck in a flooded house for days. Luckily a guy with a gator boat came by to get us to dry land and poster here managed to get us from a rescue shelter and take us to my brother's house. (I've mentioned who before, but they don't like the attention.)

But, I can't imagine what it's like when the water has that much force and you know your life, and the life of your family, are in danger.

Wow ! A positive!

Heavy rainfall related to Hurricane Helene has helped slow the advance of salt water pushing up the Mississippi River and New Orleans area drinking water is still forecast to remain safe from the threat, the Army Corps of Engineers said Tuesday.

The Corps meanwhile completed construction of a sill, or underwater levee, on Thursday to block the salt water's advance. Built near Myrtle Grove downriver of Belle Chasse, the sill rises to around 55 feet below the river's surface, and current 28-day forecasts do not show the wedge of salt water advancing past it.

That outlook means water plants at Belle Chasse and all points farther upriver would not be affected by salt contamination. But whether the forecast holds will depend on how much rain falls farther north in the Mississippi River basin and makes its way to Louisiana to flush out the salt water.

The situation in NC is absolutely dire in many communities that are completely cut off. An armada of helicopters are trying to find people and deliver supplies but it’s no easy to know where people are on this landscape.

The final death toll on this storm is going to be much larger than it is now.

Not a joke but isn’t this the area where Eric Rudolph was able to hide out for years?
I Imagine accessibility is quite the issue

Ohhhh, nice callback. Just Googled. He was captured in Murphy, NC, Nantahala Forest, which is about 100 miles southwest of Asheville halfway between Atlanta and Knoxville.

Careful what you believe on that page. The guy is a Russian pirate. We already sued him out existence from youtube and meta, now he’s on TikTok. Half the content on that page is mine and not the event they are claiming it is from. The video you posted is from NC shot by Aaron Rigsby. Here is the non-pirated version.

Thanks - I just quickly grabbed a representative video on a search.

I dont even know where engineers begin to start - how do you repair/replace this road on a hill side rocky outcrop? and there has to be 100s if not 1000s more just like this scattered all about western NC.
