Best Female Rock Vocalist (2 Viewers)

Nicks' songs have more of an adult contemporary vibe to them rather than what I think of with pure rock music. Thus her ability to still emulate her older songs is much easier than what Wilson or Benatar would have to cover.

Ann Wilson played a local casino a few years ago and did some of her Heart tunes. Being around 70 at the time there is no way she would ever be able to perform as she once did. The same would be true of any older rocker that may still be on the concert scene. Making a selection regarding 'best female rock vocalist' it's reasonable to assume that we would be choosing based on when they were at the height of their ability and/or popularity.

I would have to go Jen Ledger from Skillet. Some may not like her and she is not the lead singer, but I have to give her bonus points as she is also their drummer. I dont think the other answers are wrong, but I would turn on one of her songs before the others.

I have also been enjoying Royale Lynn as well. Again would listen to her before other mentioned. All of this could be because is new music vs songs I have heard countless times but I will stand by those two.

First time hearing Jinjer, that wasn’t bad I’m not really into what I call “screaming” metal (is that what’s it’s evolved into?)

To say she’s better than Ann Wilson, I want what you’re smoking

From my perspective, the vocal coach was more shocked at Tatiana's singing, than Ann's. That's shows higher appreciation in my book. Translation: Anne can sing lovely, but Tatiana is from another world. End of story...

By the way, I really can appreciate Heart's guitar playing. Definitely worth listening to!

Not sure you can handle it, best to stick to what you know, laboratory produced toxic smoke. :)

She obviously likes her singing, because she an opera singer herself. Bias alert for sure. She found her soul mate, but it definitely isn't ground breaking, or maybe it is to someone else?!?!

I mean is opera singing considered rock singing now?!?! I didn't get the memo....

You realize there are other genres of metal I can listen to, some I enjoy a lot. I just find that screaming sheet to just be annoying noise

Don't get caught up in that opera style, there were around 5 styles of singing in that song.
Here one with pop and rock stylings and an insane scream near the end.

And your talking to someone who isn't really a metal fan, so enjoy the kinds you like. Metal isn't my favorite genre, but I know there are more metalheads on this forum, so was catering to you guys, just to have music conversations. You won't hear me drooling all over long haired men, that cross dress, screaming in girly high pitched notes. lol

Death and thrash metal at least have some of the elements I like in Punk Rock, they probably share some common influences. I have seen Metallica wear Misfits T-shirts and Marky Ramone plays Motorhead quite often. Always considered Motorhead to be hard rock/heavy metal band, but what do I know? I think Marky Ramone was in a metal band one time.

The growling does get over done in death metal, but at least it isn't screeching high pitch sounds. To each their own I suppose.

Call it what you want, it still sounds like an opera singer to me. I get the old viking battle cry in metal music, well, at least that is sorta the vibe I'm getting from it. I don't have any Viking heritage, so maybe that's part of it.

Enjoy the music you like, but I think Despised Icons have a few dynamite songs. Even with their growling tendencies.

All good, thanks for checking them/her out.

I remember the sound of a Dutch singer named Mariska Veres for the psychedelic rock group Shocking Blue who had a unique power to her voice. When the song Venus came out a lot of people assumed it was a male lead vocalist due to the androgynous sound of the voice (and possibly due to the subject of the lyrics).

Though her vocal skills weren't even close to the women we've been discussing, it was the perfect sound for that song. So obviously the opinions that we have about a particular singer's vocal quality can often be developed due to how well it fits with the particular songs the person is known for. Mariska's entire singing career was due to that one hit song.

I remember hearing Pat for the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame (that they finally put her in!) and remember being just slightly disappointed that she didn't seem to be able to hit the higher notes she used to be able to (which was an incredible range). But I think I'm being hypercritical.

I think I remember the last time seeing a video of Stevie from recent and still sounding pretty much the same but I haven't heard Ann sing recently. I was just curious what everyone else thought.

Now, Linda has Parkinson's and can't sing at all now. Which is heartbreaking because I adore her.
Wilson just finished chemo so it remains to be heard if she recovers.

Ann Wilson is my favorite but I noticed the absence of Amy Lee in this thread so I figured that she should be mentioned.
