Coach Pete Update: Not Good on Davenport. Some on Hill and Bridgewater, Some Saints Good News also (2 Viewers)

My thoughts -

On Davenport....reporting to camp out of shape would explain why he was still playing when they pulled the rest of the starters. The coaching staff were trying to play him into shape. It would also explain his lack of burst and his looking slower than last year.

On Brees....sorry but I have my doubts. If Brees were confiding in people (even people he trusts) he was retiring after this season it would get out. Someone prominent in the sportsmedia would put it out. It’s too big to keep it quiet. Something that big would be out tomorrow in ESPN’s crawl - “Brees to retire after 2019 season” verified or not. I’m sure Brees has a plan but I think it involves another Super Bowl appearance.

Hey Ti Rider! Really good stuff! Thanks for the insights. I agree with you on Brees. As long as Brees can play near the level he has the last few years, as competitive as he is, I can't see him stepping down until he owns every major passing record and at least one more SB ring!

Everyone has their opinions. I am too excited about the 2019 Saints and the opening season to give any more negative energy to other fellow Who Dats over a thread now. I am thrilled about this team. Coach Pete was ranked as the 2nd most favorite source of all analysts on SR in a poll last year, which he really isn't. This thread got over 30 positives to 6 negatives. As long as the great majority of my Who Dat brothers and sisters enjoy Coach Pete, I will continue to feed them his info. I hope you can enjoy this season as much as I do. To me, that's what being a Saint Fan is all about. Our egos, and I speak of mine here also, are such a burden to enjoying life and each other.

Who Dat Brother! Let's all enjoy this amazing team together.
Yeah, I don't get it. When we think the source is "the janitor", we can't get enough.

Marsha - you are truly awesome. What a sense of humor. What a great and fascinating personality. Your posts always make me smile and usually laugh and you make powerful points in the process. Go Get Em Girl!!!

Hopefully, you're right and lots of conditioning coaches are wrong. If he spends 2/3 of the season in mediocre play like Lattimore did last season, the Saints' pass rush will suffer.
Mediocre play? On the Baldy rundown of Demario Davis, MD was in on the tackles, holding the line. I dont know what you are expecting from a 2nd year player.

I think everyone in sports media has penciled in that this is Brees retirement year. So, it's no secret.

Brees had an interview talking about how at 40. Recovery is getting longer and longer. So, I think anyone saying Drew is retiring in 2019 isn't shocking. Granted, his cap for next year at 15 million is still odd and probably needs to be reworked.

Always could pull a reverse and decide against retiring. Play 1 more year to outlast Brady. Extend 2-3 years and work a more manageable dead cap situation than the one he gots now.

I believe that 15 million next year will change, tho. It doesn't make sense knowing Loomis could fix that easily.

I like Coach Pete. I think he is Swimmer's altar ego at work( aka imaginary friend), but he has some good takes. Unfortunately for people who don't understand what it's like having to rehab from a big toe injury like Davenport's, there's really not a lot the guy can do to rehab until the thing is ruled completely healed. Because if he does, he stands the chance of aggravating it to the point he's back to square one. So if a 24 year old guy comes in 15 pounds over weight & healed up from his wounds. what do you do? You give him an extra 400 yards of grass drills & 6 extra gasers a day for three weeks & before you know it, this guy is back at playing weight & ready to kick butt & take names. People really need to lay off of Davenport until the regular season starts anyway. He was having an excellent rookie campaign until the injury. Once the regular season starts & he begins to be a no show there is plenty of time to beat this guy up for not doing his best.

There's something wrong with the phrase "21-year-old kid".

Having experience 24-28 year old caucasian males on trial for raping women be referred to as "kids" prior to extremely light sentencing I'm going to veto this and say there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. Especially since the brain technically isn't in an adult/mature state until around 27-28. He can purchase alcohol but he is still a kid mentally and thus susceptible to callous mistakes like this one.

It's a minor adjustment for the staff/team as they'll just assign someone to him that can help with his diet etc. It's a situation that you'd prefer not to find him in but cerebral mental guys such as himself also get lost in their own thought's a lot...which can then lead to inaction(I suffer a similar fate). He had a lot of weight on him having been not only a 1st rounder but a guy the Saints gave up an additional 1st round pick to acquire. If you read Deuce Windham's scouting report he had a 3rd round grade on him but 1st round measurements. He was always going to be a year 3 guy for the most part but following the loss of Okafor and Rankins I'm sure the pressure began to build.

He's got time to continue to learn how to be a professional and as someone else mentioned it's a rather common mistake for young guys as Marshon Lattimore also ran into the same issue his sophomore season.

He'll be fine, baby steps like staying healthy all training camp(didn't happen last year) are things that I can appreciate. Thanks for the insights Swimmer!

You're not saying anything that argues my point. In fact, everything you stated supports my point. In saying that there's something wrong with the phrase "21-year-old kid", I wasn't saying that there are NONE. I was saying that there is something wrong with someone who is 21 years old and is still acting like a kid, and there's something wrong with someone who thinks that society shouldn't expect 21 year olds on the whole to behave like adults.

As evidence, you cite an experience where young adults acted like kids because they were actually criminals. That means they are outside the norm of behavior so much so that society condemns their behavior and puts them in confinement away from the rest of society because of their behavior. So, that supports my opinion that 21 year olds should not be expected to act like kids. For one, it can be dangerous to society in its extreme cases.

In the case of Davenport, you say it's no big deal because the team can just hire someone to watch over him. I don't disagree with that. However, it doesn't change my statement that I'm sure it's not what the team wanted or expected out of a million dollar double first round pick, not at all. Case in point, if they did expect that kind of unprofessional kidlike behavior, they would have put a "babysitter" on him from the beginning and not waited until he pissed away half the season. Further, if they expected this kind of behavior from him, I'm sure they wouldn't have drafted the guy in the first round and given up next year's first round for the privilege.

Second year has very little to do with it. Yes, he's a second year player. So are Keith Kirkwood and Taylor Stallworth. Grouping MD in with all second year players is kind of ridiculous. I'm sure you would agree that the expectations for MD are much, much higher because of what the Saints gave up for him and what they're paying him. So, he's holding the line and was in on some tackles. That's awesome. I'm sure that's what the Saints are paying him for. I bet Stallworth held the line and was in on some tackles, too. The Saints aren't paying him close to what they're paying MD.

If he only has 15 lbs to lose- it is not a big deal unless there is some sort of medical condition we’re not aware of. If he is “out if shape” in that he lost a lot of muscle and quickness because of an incredibly sedentary lifestyle then we have issues.
But He’s 25 years old. He shouldn’t be battling a slowed metabolism.

Can we please close this thread. It’s gotten out of hand and now it’s just a pissing contest. If you don’t believe swimmer, that’s fine, most of us do and we enjoy the occasional bits of information. If you don’t believe, than just keep your opinion to yourself or show your proof if you disagree. Debating his information is useless when you’re only using your opinion.

No need to close the thread. Just have a debate about what's presented. We all have our own ideas about the source. If you don't like the source, feel free to not read the thread. It's not that hard.
