Comic Book Talk (2 Viewers)

I haven't kept up with it. What's going on? I'll research it later, but a quick synopsis would be lovely.

The alt-right making their way into comics due to a lot of social justice in the industry, primarily by Marvel.

Can't we keep politics out of our comics? I read comics to escape from the real world. :(

This insanity between the Alt Right and SJWs has infected everything. Entertainment blogs and sites I've read for years that were never the least bit political now spend half their time preaching and condemning. The zeitgeist right now is "everything must be political," and I'm getting kind of sick of it on all sides. I don't follow any creators on social media anymore because they're all seemingly crazy and on one side of the extremist spectrum or the other. Like Mark Waid and Ethan Van Sciver are 100% diametrically opposed politically, but both are completely awful in their inability to shut the fork up about any of it and I now regard both guys as completely toxic personalities.

And it's not just comics. It's movies, video games, TV, music. Everything.

I'm burnt out bad on all of this. Probably a reason I've been deep diving into old stuff lately. It's almost calming to go back and just read or watch something for entertainment and removed over the insane social and political conflicts of the late 2010's. So, so burnt out on it all.

And yeah, I get that politics and social commentary obviously has a place in art and some of my favorite things are actually political and socially minded. But you can handle things with nuance or you can beat people over the head with a sledgehammer, and right now it's all just beating people over the head with a sledgehammer.

Right. I realize that there always has been some degree of politics in comics, movies, etc. As you said, though, it's just gotten to the point of insanity. I'm tired of hearing about political opinions from actors, authors, musicians, athletes. I don't want to know what they think. I want to watch them play a football game or watch an entertaining movie or read a beautifully drawn and creative comic.

Don't think it can be avoided. Frankly, individuals are free to do and say what they want, even on social media/whatever. But I shouldn't have to read about it in a comic book to the extent that some do. I still say Marvel is the biggest culprit of this. I remember there was this issue of X-Men Gold when it first came out that caused an deserving uproar because the penciller decided to add tenets of the Quran to it images without editorial approval. Like seriously, what the hell?

Wil Wheaton events is a product of his own making. They went out on a crusade to make sure that no one could say anything but what they wanted to say, and social media evolved it to a point where even he couldn't survive. If it wasn't Wil, it would be someone else. You can't lead a rage attack and not stand by your own guidelines. It sucks, as I really enjoy Wil on Geek and Sundry, especially his tabletop series. He and his friends want a blank check to attack anyone that does not fit their ideals, but as soon as their own rhetoric comes back on them, they cry foul and unfair. It's a two way street Wil.

Back to comic books.

I am really enjoying the new Avengers storyline and cast.

I don't even know who's in the lineup these days other than She-Hulk (since they can't seem to keep her in a solo title).

I will say this. This new lineup for the GotG they just announced is downright asinine. Cable? Jubilee? Rocket in Groot armor...?

What.

The.

Frock?

Yeah. I can't take DC comics, I am strictly a Marvel guy, but even I am not buying that one.

Sorry to hear that. Considering the mess Marvel has been doing, DC has been killing it, even with some of their mishaps.

I try DC again from time to time. But I just can't make it through a DC comic without getting incredibly bored and uninterested. None of the characters can make me invested in them. The closest is Flash, but even still, the writing in DC, at least the last time I tried, was akin to reading a technical manual for a microwave written by a Supreme Court Justice.

Meanwhile, except for the fiasco of killing off Cyclops, I have enjoyed just about everything Marvel has done.

After that debacle, I think I'm going to hide here for a few days...

Here is not a bad place to hide. I still have such a huge stack of comics to catch up on. I think that will protect me. :)

Me too. Plus I picked up my weekly pull yesterday so my pile is higher now.

On another note, I'm going to be in Shreveport in October. I need info on the best spot to hit up.

Excalibur Comics. They're at 937 E 70th St. Unless there's something brand new and way more awesome in town (which I doubt), they're the best in Shreveport. Might be one of the best in the state.
