Now for Bob Harras to be canned.

Even though specifics are scarce, I'm willing to bet 5G was/is shaping up to be every bit the disaster it seemed like it was going to be, and the rumors that even DiDio was getting cold feet about it probably signalled internal conflict at the company and the higher ups finally pulled the trigger to get rid of him because of it. DiDio just had lots of terrible ideas and was always given few reign despite that. Maybe he finally had an idea so bad the powers that be had to step in...

As to Harras, he was never more than DiDio's puppet. He was arguably the least powerful EiC in the history of the industry. I can't see him sticking around long with his overlord gone.

Now, where they go from here is crucial.

Yeah. From everything we heard, they were severely cutting down the time of 5G and that AT&T was now against the name (they started saying Fifth Generation cuz of this). If DiDio was canned, that order most definitely came from the higher-ups at Ma Bell.

Could it be that the uproar over 5G was so strong that they just scrap it completely? Please?

At this point, we don't know what's going to happen. We won't see the effect of DiDio being gone for a few months at a minimum.

I don't typically quote Bleeding Cool, but they broke the story. They're claiming Scott Snyder was the major pushback against 5G and that, along with the recent editorial departures led to DiDio's firing. It's quite concerning if a single writer have that much influence.

Maybe Snyder's got enough sense to realize that Marvel already tried this and failed miserably? If so, and his influence is that significant, then perhaps that's a good thing.

Gotta disagree here (about Snyder, not the firing).

I'm sure we'll get more in the coming days. DiDio hasn't been shy about talking to Rich Johnston in the past so it wouldn't shock me if his version of events is "leaked" to Bleeding Cool soon. As far the Snyder stuff, I'm going to assume they'd been looking for a reason to get rid of him and took the pushback+turnover+general skepticism over 5G as their chance. It's pretty telling that the praise he's getting from industry types at the moment amounts to "He's a really nice guy and he genuinely loves comics." I'm sure he is a nice guy and I'm sure he does love comics, but he was not a good publisher and he's been throwing random sheet against the wall to see what sticks for years, generally with diminishing returns.

Whatever the case may be with Snyder, I'm just glad that we might get some course correction on 5G before that iceberg hits the ship.

Johnston said, as far as he knows, the plan is still for 5G to launch in October. Of course, a lot can happen between now and then, and even if does launch, it could be an Elsewords or Time Crisis style event to make it easier to ignore. So I doubt we're free of it entirely, but maybe it takes some other less harmful shape.

Agreed

Ethan Van Sciver? Really? Might as well believe Rob Liefeld in everything he says.

I listened to his Youtube video on this. He sounds like he knows it all.

Van Sciver is legitimately insane. He's damn near chased himself out of the industry because of it despite being a talented artist. He's burned bridges and has big axes to grind as well. Gonna need a way better source than him for this info. It wouldn't shock me if his "source" exists only inside his head.

The thing about this whole "DC is going to shut down!!!" stuff is no one reputable is reporting on it. It's all marginal characters and clickbait sites. Rich Johnston, who is a questionable person but undoubtedly the top rumor monger in the industry, hasn't so much as made a peep about it and you know if he'd heard anything about it he'd be wallowing in it like a pig in sheet. No one with any legitimate connections to the industry seems to be acknowledging it much, if at all. I'm not saying it's impossible, but so far the information is coming from areas that are lacking credibility to say the least.

I've listened to several podcasts / videos last night on this topic. There were some "sky is falling, DC is done" types, but probably just as many saying that DC isn't going anywhere. Basically, the comics division is too important to the movie division. That, and there's too much money involved. After listening to all of it, I'd say that Superman, Batman, and the rest will be just fine.

Now, if we can just get Geoff Johns to come back and toss Bendis on his arse.
