The C.E.O of youtube recently had an interview with one of the networks that said any video on youtube that goes against the W.H.O will be removed from the platform.

You know, because the W.H.O has literally been wrong in almost every facet of this pandemic should maintain any credibility.
It would be good if we could move away from these cartoon caricatures of international organisations and countries. If you want to see how the WHO has actually done as the situation has progressed, you can see all their situation reports here, from the 21st January to today. They've got a lot right, and many nations - including the US and UK - would be in better positions if they'd been paying more attention to them.

As for YouTube, of course they're going to use the advice and information provided by the WHO as a basis for reference for removing harmful content, because otherwise, what would they be using? Their own medical expertise? The opinions of cranks on the internet? No. Referring to the WHO is the reasonable thing to do in this situation.

That doesn't mean the WHO isn't open to criticism; of course they are. But saying they do almost nothing right and painting them as a cartoon villain that should be ignored is just plain daft.

So healthy people should not wear masks?

There you go with your nuance again. We live in the age of perfect or worthless. There is no middle ground and there are no mistakes, just nefarious intentions. Get with the program!

There is a tremendous amount of disagreement about the value of facemasks. The CDC recommends them and I see it as a "why not?" sort of situation. However, how effective they are against Covid is absolutely an open question.

Well, the point is that there can be competent sources that have conflicting medical advice. If YouTube is saying they are going to silence medical advice that is in opposition to WHO, a lot of us see this as an issue. Most of the people on this thread would say you are being unwise to downright evil if you go out without a mask.

How about YouTube lets people post what they want and leave it to the viewer as to what they want to see and what advice to follow?
If Arathrael only want to follow WHO advice, go ahead, and other people can choose other experts to follow.

They're being recommended for everyone because we don't have the testing capacity to know who is or is not positive, or who among the positive are asymptomatic. Otherwise, a healthy person wearing a mask is a waste of that mask and can absolutely lead to a higher risk of infection since people seem to think the mask makes them impervious to infection.

If you want unfiltered "information" go to Facebook.

I've already stated in this thread YouTube shouldn't delete content, so we are in agreement there.

I don't see where Arathreal said we should only follow W.H.O. advice, he said it's not completely worthless or incompotent as it was being presented. He can clarify his own thoughts if he chooses.

Last I checked, youtube wasn't a government entity. Those quacks can post a video on their own site and it will never be taken down. They've got a site for their urgent care biz, so they've got a venue for it.

YouTube now a branch of global Ministry of Truth.

I guess we should not mention Taiwan on YouTube as WHO refuses to acknowledge they exist.

YouTube has the same first amendment rights as you or me.

Im not a fan if that interpretation, but it is the law.

I think YouTube are in charge of their own platform, and if they don't want it to be used as a platform for amplifying dangerous misinformation that will result in lives needlessly being lost, they're free to act accordingly. And if they want to use the WHO as a basis for reference for doing so, that's a sensible approach.

As for the WHO advice, let's take the mask example. It's being presented incorrectly in this thread. The WHO advice, as I linked to above, is that wearing medical masks "is one of the prevention measures that can limit the spread of certain respiratory viral diseases, including COVID-19", but caution that "the use of a mask alone is insufficient to provide an adequate level of protection, and other measures should also be adopted". They also note that there is limited evidence that healthy individuals wearing masks in households or among contacts of sick patients, or as attendees of mass gathering may be beneficial, but that there is currently (emphasis added) no evidence that wearing a mask by health persons in the wider community setting is beneficial as a preventive measure.

They go on to say medical masks should be reserved for health care workers, as there is the risk of it being counter-productive (creating a false sense of security leading to a reduction in practice of other essential measures such as hand hygiene and distancing, along with increasing touching of the face), and where there are supply problems exacerbates problems with the supply to health care workers.

They also note that "In some countries masks are worn in accordance with local customs or in accordance with advice by national authorities in the context of COVID-19. In these situations, best practices should be followed about how to wear, remove, and dispose of them, and for hand hygiene after removal."

And they also say "The use of masks made of other materials (e.g., cotton fabric), also known as nonmedical masks, in the community setting has not been well evaluated. There is no current evidence to make a recommendation for or against their use in this setting."

Summarising that as "healthy people should not wear masks" is flat out wrong. The actual advice is rational, evidence-based, and nuanced.

Oh geeeeeez........you got that right! 👍😞

It makes me wish everyone in the USofA could read this thread on SR and get EDUCATED!!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

I saw a nice looking older lady, on the National news, at the airport, about to get on a flight. She said, “oh, nobody is sick on this plane, so we will be fine.” ???😳😳!!!!!!!!!!
P.S. no mask in sight, either ?????!!!!

Then I saw a nice looking young guy on the National news, sitting in the barbershop, no mask on, getting a mop chop. He said, “oh, I am not in the high risk group, so I will be fine.”

Then I was out walking a pup, and I saw a beautiful little girl with her dad, out taking an evening walk. They bought had masks on.
And all I kept thinking was, “superchuck (I think it was), said, “masks on kids are not good, because it affects their oxygen levels, masks on kids are not good because it affects their oxygen levels......”

Oh Lord, help us get this monster contained. 🙏🏻 😡😡😡

Pretty sure that was sammymvpknight who talked about the masks not being good for kids because of lower oxygen levels.

I'm still skeptical of WHO's influences. I do think that they're subject to pressure from China and other nations to slant their advisories in a given direction. They're certainly not all bad, but we can't ignore some of the poorly worded and obviously politically influenced statements they've made. They accuse others of politicizing while doing exactly that themselves hurts their credibility.

FWIW, I always thought highly of the WHO before CV19 happened. Now? Not nearly so much.

Coronavirus death toll may be much higher than reported in hard-hit locations - based on evidence that overall deaths are substantially higher (as much as 50%) with no explanation other than the pandemic.
