Yeah, we've seen how Americans react to contact tracing on this very thread . But hey, just because that's how those countries did it doesn't mean that it's the only way. Our population density is less than those places.

It's likely to vary by locality - but I don't think that many are. Participation will likely be at the big corporate level, and then below that, based on how committed the owners are. Some will be but many small and medium business owners (understandably) just want to get back to business.

It's a gamble at this point. It might reignite hot spots and light new ones - but new outbreaks probably take two or three weeks before they're fully appreciated. Or that might not happen - it might go pretty well. But nobody really knows that . . . I mean nobody.
What puzzles me is what in the numbers say we're ready? I'll use Ohio's because those are the ones I look at every day. What in these graphs say we're better than we were mid March when they shut down? I get it we can't stay closed down forever but they better be way more prepared than they were at the beginning because this thing is going to explode.Screenshot_20200509-002621.png

Can you post sourcing when you post charts? Without the axes, it's really hard to know exactly what those are showing.

But yeah. There's a lot of places where the ramps are pointing up.

Update on Hawaii.

We entered phase 1 of reopening yesterday statewide.

There are 0 active cases on Kauai.

Only 2 active here on Big Island.

Several still active on Maui and Oahu.

We also have the highest unemployment rate in the country at 35%.

Since the vast majority of those jobs are tourism related im not sure how much of an economy we will have until people can travel here again.

The lieutenant gov. is also a local ER doctor in the town where I live. He told one of my patients they are considering requiring covid testing 72 hours in advance for anyone wanting to enter the state. I'm not sure if they will lift the current 14 day quarantine for anyone flying into the islands with the testing. The 14 day quarantine is for anyone flying between any island or coming from out of state. I thought they actually waited 2 weeks late to implement that order. We probably wouldn't have had any cases here if they had.

Also made a Costco trip today. They had most things but it was sparse. Lots of the upper pallet holding areas are empty. Kind of spooky to see so little in the store. Not sure we are going to stay out here too much longer. We don't want to get caught on an island in a huge food shortage. Plus the economy appears wrecked for an extremely long time.

The quarantine issue is a real problem for places that have the ability to isolate but also depend on outsiders for economic activity. What does 14-day quarantine mean in HI?

I have seen similar restrictions at county lines at some places in the states. But does that mean the person has to hole up in some residence and can't even go to the store or a walk outside off their residence? For example, I know someone that wants to go to their rental property (condo) in the mountains of North Carolina. They own the property but they can't go there because the county has a strict 14-day quarantine for anyone coming in to stay overnight in the county. It's a significant fine and the word is being spread that it is vigorously enforced.

Legality aside, that sends a strong message to stay out - no one is going to travel into a place where they then can't do anything (including groceries) for two weeks.

Its really strict Chuck. If you are a resident you have to stay in your home. If you are a tourist you have to stay in your vacation rental or hotel room. The only valid reason to leave is for medical emergencies. Not even for food. The fine for violation is 5000 and up to a year in jail. They have arrested several people so far on each island. One couple was arrested several times and finally the police drove them to the airport and basically evicted them from the state. It angered a lot of people because the state actually paid for their return flights.

Sure ...it's Ohio's official site which IMO is not that great of a site. Under the trends drop down they started showing the 21 day trend instead of a 5 day like they were doing....I think hoping it would show more of a peak and decline which it really doesn't. To me it looks fairly random...maybe a slight trend down but not enough where you'd think we're ready to open.

Yeah it’s onerous but if you’re gonna do it - that’s how you have to. But then what? it’s hard to incrementally open risk. Containment is really hard with this one.

Yeah, that's why I think the economy is screwed for a very long time here. We can keep it out of the state but we would also keep unemployment super high by doing that. Not sure what people will do when unemployment runs out if this thing is still rampant in a year.

I'm not sure why they'd be angry. They got rid of a couple who refused to follow the rules in place. If they're that worried about state money, then just send the couple the bill. Seems easy enough to do.

That said, I'm not sure I'd want to wait around to find out what happens next there either. How do these people get food if they can't go out? Is there some special delivery service?

No way I know of for them to get food. They are required to arrange food before they come I guess. Its really just meant to deter people. I don't like that they paid their airfare either. I would just as soon as have them sit in a quarantine camp for 2 weeks at their own expense. We already had a quarantine center set up at Tripler airforce base so I don't know why they decided the taxpayers should get the bill to send them home.

The government can send them a bill just like the IRS does when you don't pay them. It's fairly easy and it's cheaper to ship them out than to quarantine them.

I agree that would have been a better option than paying their airfare.

Here is one of the articles about it.
