Cutting the cable, lets talk options and media setups (1 Viewer)

So let me ask this question with regards to antennas...

Is there a coaxial cable that is stronger than a RG6? What about shielding?

RG6 should be sufficient. I believe it's rated for outdoors, although you may require different terminations for outdoors.

This also means that ESPN has now lost 10 million subscribers in the past 2.5 years. Figuring that each of these subscribers is paying in the neighborhood of $80 a year and we're talking about ESPN losing revenue of $840 million a year in the past three years. That's over $2.5 billion the network was expecting that it will never see. Toss in the subscriber losses at ESPN2 and ESPNU and ESPN has lost over a billion dollars a year, three billion total, in revenue over the past three years.

What's more if these Nielsen numbers are accurate it suggests that cord cutting is accelerating.

even if it wasn't cord cutting, that balloon was going to burst
culturally we're just hooked into that hype/crash cycle - it's tiring

Im won't argue against how tiring that is but this doesn't fall in that category I don't think. For all ESPN's crapTV (and there is plenty of it) they have also had a sizable chunk of the only good TV programming left in live sports and that is all that has kept most people subscribers. Otherwise this would just be another part of the E,TLC, etc..bundle. Cable has known for some time that live sports was the only thing making some people not cut.

Hey, guys and gals.

I'm moving to the great white North and I don't think that I want to bring my DirecTv with me. Part of it is due to ever increasing costs...and another part is that I just don't use it enough. I'll be content streaming/going to sports bar for Sports. Internet is a must due to job. I have a newish Apple laptop.

I like Netflix but haven't tried the other services. What kind of setup would you recommend? I have some money to spend, but ideally I would like to be able to save compared to the cost of DirecTv/cable. Thanks!

The short version, IMO, it is only questionable if you choose to download certain things on to Kodi.

Kind of like some of the photos on BobE's computer. :ezbill:

Does it matter if we have only Apple cell phones/computers? Is Apple TV any good? I have no interest with dealing with glitchiness. Ultimately, I would like to have unlimited internet and be able to stream Netflix and HBO for a reasonable price. Sports would be nice...but not a necessity.

It doesn't matter. Apple TV is nice.

Don't know if it was brought up already but Sling TV has a new TV deal. You can switch out ESPN/ABC channels and get the Fox channels which includes Fox Sports Regional and FS1. Same price $20.00 a month. It is called Sling Beta. More info,

It would be nice if they were to get the USA Network.

I think that NBC/Universal has Hulu. It may take some time if it ever come to Sling. However it does sound like they added a package of CBS/Viacom channels.

Sling TV launches on Apple TV - Jun. 13, 2016

Sling keeps its entry-level price point low by having a core bundle of channels.
For example, Sling is adding Viacom's suite of cable channels, like Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central and VH1.
But only one of those channels, Comedy Central, will be in the core single-stream $20-a-month service.
