Cutting the cable, lets talk options and media setups (7 Viewers)

I had a digital antenna that I was using last year. I put it up in my attic and it work very good.

It's on the outside wall. I think my biggest problem is that my apartment faces the north and I'm north of Baton Rouge. I believe the towers are all to the west of the city.

Oh man, I think that's your problem right there. If you can figure out a way to get that antenna facing west, I think you'll be ok.
Like I said, You're limited in what you can do in an apartment.
If I hear of anything you can do to enhance your reception, I'll let you know!

I really hate cable companies....
Netflix, CW Near Deal That Accelerates Streaming Window as Hulu Ends In-Season Pact (EXCLUSIVE) | Variety

Hope this isn't true. CW ending their deal with Hulu for in season viewing of new episodes! No more Flash, Supernatural,DC Legends. Was probably gonna try Supergirl. Maybe I'll get a labatomy where tv/movie viewing has no interest to me. I'm feeling like Abed from Community "Mmmmmahhhhhhhhmmmmmmm"

It's now confirmed. As a Hulu and Netflix user, I have mixed feelings about this. I'm probably more disappointed than anything because it eliminates next-day watching of CW episodes.

Next year, you’ll be able to binge-watch the whole season of Arrow just over a week after the premiere of its finale.

In sealing with The CW a new multi-year content licensing deal, Netflix hasn’t just secured the continued exclusive right to stream previous seasons of the network’s fare, it’s made provisions to stream full seasons of CW series starting only eight days after each of their finales air.

The new agreement includes not only The CW’s current lineup but also any series produced over the course of the pact, which starts with the recently-wrapped 2015-16 broadcast season. In other words, the contract covers freshman offerings Frequency, No Tomorrow and Riverdale, as well as the newly inherited Supergirl.

Sling TV added BBC America to it's basic package. Not a bad line of channels for $19.99 a month. Also you can add channels packages for on $5.00 extra.

I followed most of this thread and don't recall how much we discussed this but my main cord cutting issue on the horizon is lack of DVR. I don't really care now but I want to knock this out before football approaches because I will be working for many games.

I am not overly fond of the Tivo OTA idea because taking on a monthly service charge for so little use seems to defeat the idea of cord cutting. Anyone using an external tuner/older media center combo? Do you consider it a successful alternative?

Build Your Own Over-the-Air DVR

for 40-60 bucks I am considering trying this.

That looks interesting. Might look into it as well. Like you, I did not like the option of going to Tivo for what they are charging. Hulu helps a lot with regards to television shows, with the exception of CBS (and now CW).

yea, live sports is maybe the only way many cable companies are still keeping many on the hook. We have another option here in an incredible SR contributor and I will probably still continue to take advantage but I would like to have the games ready as soon as I get home as well.

I downloaded a free App on Roku called "News On" . It has news telecast from TV stations from all over the country. I'm watching live coverage from WFAA in Dallas right now.

I have a dumb question for u guys with Cox internet. Today, I am going to be turning in my Cox DVR and cancelling my cable tv with them. I am going to keep their Premier internet service though. My question is will any of my Roku channels that require a provider login be affected? My email address and password will still b the same. Thanks for any help!!

Yeah, they'll be affected. The provider logins are for cable customers only. So if you don't have a subscription to a TV service, it shouldn't work. You will need to either use someone else's login or sign up with a service like Sling.

You will still get networks streamed over the Net like ESPN 3 . However you will need either Sling or Vue to get the ESPN networks(ESPN,ESPN2,FS1 etc.) For me I just went with Sling and so far so good. I lower my bill by $71.25. Sling has deals such as a free Apple TV of Roku for 3 months prepay. Basically they are giving it to you for free(Streaming device). Sling only $19.99 a month for the basic package which includes ESPN1&2.
