Dan Orlovsky about the saints and Kellen Moore (36 Viewers)

I get your point and it holds no water to the point I'm making. Which is this team is not 1 or 2 years away like the Houstons or Washington because this roster and cap situation is dismal.
1-2 years away from what? Making the playoffs? We tied for best record in the division last year. We are competing again this year if not for injuries and historically bad HC. You underestimate how quickly things can turn around in the NFL.

Unless I'm reading this wrong we'll be 58M under in 2026 and 221M under in 2027. Yes, 25 is
going to be bad,but there is light at the end of the tunnell. It's not going to be a 4 year rebuild.

Don't forget to look at the contracts that say "void" next to them. Then look at the dead money numbers and add them up (nearly $50m, not including Young and Juwan that will hit this year). Those are not being taken into account when it comes to the cap numbers they have there. Also take into account that in order to get under the cap this year, there will be more pushed to the years you're looking at.

nfl is fully guaranteed coaching contracts. hell ill be that guy if they need someone to just stand on the sidelines for 2 years.
Oh right, forgot to account for “typical layperson who would never actually get such a call in the first place”

Silly of me to forget to put an exception for “fans who think they know what it takes to be a head coach themselves”

Here’s the thing, 265th edition of jayd:

They need someone to do juuuuuuust a bit more than “stand on the sidelines”

But you know that already

And we’ll still be 29th or so in cap room in 2026, as of now. Under, yes. But still behind almost the entire NFL.

I was just looking at this some more. Something changed in the way the numbers were showing earlier in the season. The $58 million IS taking the void contracts into account. I still think there will be much more added to it in the coming weeks due to clearing for 2025, so it won't be $58m for very long. In addition, in 2026 we only have 33 players under contract and in 2027 we only have 12. All other players are listed as voids in 2026 and 2027. So while the cap space looks good on paper for 2026, even if the $58m in space were to stand (it won't), you'd have to divide it over another 20 players leaving an average of $2.9m per player.

If we kick the can one more time on some of the smaller contracts, get a couple of aging vets to take pay cuts and get rid of the biggest cap anchor. We could be in pretty good shape come 2027.

And build heavily through the draft.

I don't think it'll be a 4 year rebuild. I don't think our roster is as bad as were being told...I think it's top heavy in talent and when injuries Ravage that top you're abosolutely going to have the type of season we had. However, if you can build a middle class w/ about 8-10 draft picks this year so you have some young developmental talent it should stabilize things.

We're not better than our record but were not as bad as the record. Exactly why getting a high draft pick was the best thing that could hae happened to us.

Want to knwo the worst thing? If we'd won enough to end up drafting like 22nd or later along w/ still having this aging roster. It likely woud have resulted in a let down in 2025 because it would have been somewhat of an illusion, and we'd still have Allen lol.

If we could trade back from the 9th pick and pick up extra 2nds and 3rds between 2025 and 2026 it would definitely give us some fresh players. It also lowers the cost of the 1st rounder. The 9th pick gets a $40m contract. The 32nd pick gets half of that. We could fit the Super Bowl winners 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks for the less amount of cap space as the 9th pick. I know we need star players, but we also just need good players. More picks in the top 100 helps us in so many ways.

I just did a mock draft where I traded back 7 spots with Arizona and picked up a future 1st and 2nd rounder for 2026 and used the 16th pick on Jalon Walker.

Something that is understated is Moore getting a chance to observe how Howie Roseman and those guys do it in Phily. Loomis has somewhat of a man crush on Howie, has talked him up several times and someone he likes to model things after, and someone that he perks up when he calls because he's wondering if Roseman is about to one up him.

Loomis likely values that Moore can bring some knowledge from that program. To me that gives him a significant leg up over Kafka.

The 58 million is going to disappear fast when we start restructuring

Loomis has a crush on Howie in the way a nail has a crush on a hammer.

SP said after the 2006 season that it wasn’t about getting the 53 best players but getting the 53 players that fit the team .

There are about 40 to 50 players in the league that can start for any team.
Then there are the good, average and other players. These players are mostly interchangeable and replaceable and many are replaced each year.

As a fan I expect a competitive team next season in the playoff hunt at a minimum. I hope the players coaches and the organization as a whole expect more.

Whoever the HC is I expect him to want and expect to win from day one. Set a standard of excellence that will stand for years. That’s what was lost with DA.

IMO
