Update Dave Ziegler joining the Saints as an advisor for Free Agency and the draft (Saints permanently hire Ziegler as Personnel Advisor) (2 Viewers)

One good draft
2017 Saints class is considered the all time greatest draft class for any team in the 2000s. Most teams aren’t hitting every pick or even most of their early round picks. We’ve drafted 2-3 productive starters in every draft class since the 2019 draft, which is really good and better than at least half of the league.

49ers haven’t hit on an early 1st-3rd round pick since they took Aiyuk in 2020. We’ve had 8 out of 12 successful 1st-3rd rd picks since then. The OT & DE picks not panning out yet doesn’t wipe out the greater amount of picks that have.

What position would Ireland have in Denver’s FO at the moment? They have a GM, asst GM, and pro & college personnel directors in place. Unless a firing’s happening here or in Denver, can’t see Ireland leaving an asst GM position here for a lesser job.

Ziegler’s advisory role seems to be filling in for former college scouting director Cody Rager’s spot for the draft.
If I can find it I’ll link to it but I read something about Sean not getting along with the GM there.

That plus all of the work going into evaluating and grading players has already been done for this year’s draft so when someone gets fired joins another team they won’t have a lot of influence on that year’s draft.

Changes in the scouting department normally takes place after the draft so you can add whoever you want for next year. Ireland came here before the 2015 draft but he overhauled the scouting department after that one.

Maybe Ziegler is here for Rager’s job or for a larger role moving forward I don’t know, like I said it’s just speculation.

Exactly.

2017 wasn’t his first good draft here. 2016 we got Rankins, Mike, Vonn Bell, and Onyemata.

Since ‘19 draft
2019: McCoy, Gardner-Johnson, Elliss
2020: Ruiz, Baun (as a pass rusher)
2021: Werner, Adebo
2022: Olave, Taylor
2023: Bresee, Howden

Perry and Miller also looks like they’ll take the leap to become starter level players in 2024. Landon Young has 6 career starts as a ‘21 6th round OT and has never been cut for the PS.

Ireland is like a gambler that used to hit alot then gets on that cold Streak where nothing can work out. He needs a change, I know we do. For as good as a couple drafts were, the latest drafts have been mediocre at best.

Fun fact:

Brittain Brown RB UCLA was an employee of mine the day he got drafted. His brother worked with us for about a year on and off and Brittain came and worked for us for a couple weeks after the combine and before the draft while he was here training with his brother, it was pretty cool and all our other guys were excited because I think he really thought he was gonna be a UDFA

Ireland has been more above average since 2017. What we tend to do a lot is exaggerate how bad the draft classes are and write off the rest of the class when one pick doesn’t work out. One unsuccessful pick doesn’t define a class when there’s 2-3+ productive players drafted with them.

Foskey was in the same class with Bresee, Miller, Perry, and Howden. Turner was in the same class with Werner and Adebo. Penning was drafted with Olave and Taylor. The rest of the classes are severely ignored to the point as if Olave, Adebo, Werner, Taylor, Bresee and others were never drafted or doesn’t exist.

It’s still too early to write off Penning and Foskey.
It takes 2 or 3 full seasons to determine if a player won’t live up to expectations. Turner hasn’t been a bust in pressuring the QB.
