Dennis Allen chewing out Isaiah Foskey (1 Viewer)

I feel like this was important for Allen to do and for fans to see.

It’s been my biggest beef with him. He sometimes looks like a spectator out there, especially when we are on offense.

I get that’s not his side of the game day play calling responsibility, but he’s in charge of the WHOLE team. If he sees a player false starting at a crucial moment, or making errors, no matter what side of the ball, GET ON HIM about it!

I don’t need him hooping and hollering like a crazy man all game long, but every once in awhile, show the players that you’re fed up with them and give them reason to fear their job is on the line by continuing to make you mad.

It was a short video clip in the OP, but for a brief moment there, Allen actually resembled what I believe a HC is supposed to look like after a player makes a mistake.

I have also been grilling this guy, but I did notice at least 1 series sometime in the 3rd where he won a few reps and got some good pressure. I noticed it because there was a clear hold against #55 on a 3rd down that prevented a sack right after one of our BS penalties.

All that to say that I think there is some skill to start with here, but he has a MAJOR effort problem. He took the whole 4Q off and ngl it kinda looks like he is upset about being so low on the depth chart so he is mailing it in.

When it is time to cut down I hope we don't keep him just because he is a second rounder. Cut him and allow him to be a practice squad guy. He isn't ready period. There are 2 or 3 players that are playing better than him. Not hating on the guy and believe he needs time. But my eyeball test tell me he is not even close to being ready.

Looking back at Isiah college stat sheet... He really played against creampuffs. He would disappear a lot.
That's the nature of Notre Dames schedule construct...they'll maybe schedule a top 5 for the sake of argument....but 95% of their schedule is against the Syracuses of the CFB world. They'll load up with mid teams from major conferences thus keeping their SoS up by not playing an Appalachian state or something...so when they finish the season 11-2 they'll always be in the Playoff Conversation...fake contenders.

Never thought it was possible for a DE to reveal himself as a possible bust so soon.

That being said, I’m a man that absolutely hated the DE we picked in round 1 of the 2011 draft; I thought he was slow, lacked burst, lacked great moves, etc., and after seeing him as a virtual non-factor as a pass rusher despite starting all 16 games, I thought my beliefs were confirmed.

12 years later, and he’s arguably the greatest Saints defender of all-time.

Let’s be patient and give Foskey more than a couple of preseason games to learn his job. It’s easy to forget sometimes that we are asking 20-22 year old kids to go play a game with grown men, and a game we are all used to watching (mostly) grown men play. Some guys take a bit longer than others to adjust to their new reality.

A few thoughts:

1. The draft was solid in certain areas but weak overall. We forced the pick at DE when I think IOL or TE might have been a better play, especially with O’Cyrus Torrence and Luke Musgrave available. Brian Branch also was available. Point is, we could have taken a BPA approach. But we saw Foskey as filling a need. Hopefully in the long run that’ll prove to be a good move.

2. Foskey has struggles. He looks lost at times and his football instincts appear questionable at best. That being said, I am convinced he’s doing “too much thinking” out there. I think a lot of what we are seeing is a result of him playing the scheme in his mind rather than the game on the field. He’ll have to sit and learn, and next year I think we will see improvement.

3. Finally, all is not lost. I saw Foskey give a good pass rush where he blew pass the LT and almost sacked Stick. Stick felt the pressure and scrambled out of it. Point is, we see a lot of disappointing play. But when I saw that play it made me think this is prospect who has to be given time to learn before we declare him to be a total lost cause.

Put your players in the best situation to succeed, let him be a stand up rusher.
Unfortunately, the Saints don’t seem to do that, especially on defense. They draft undersized college DEs that were mainly designated pass rushers and try to “make” them every down DEs. They also draft DBs that are effective man-to-man in coverage and have them play zone. Or they draft college DEs and try to turn them into every down LBs.

Let’s see how he responds this week in practice and against Houston. We should be expecting to see him making Some plays no doubt!!

The coaches are seeing every rep in practice to go along with the games. A lot will go into making these decisions, and that includes projecting which of the young players have the higher ceiling.

I think people on this site are way too quick to anoint players and write players off. Foskey has a long way to go but if the coaches stick with him, it's because they believe he can get there.

You're entirely too reasonable to be on the Internet.

He has $7m guaranteed on his contract and we already gave him a $3m signing bonus, there is practically a 0% chance he gets cut.

True. But reporters are too. Looking at him and hearing what most reporters saw, he doesn't seem to be ready. I just don't want to release a good player just to keep a second rounder.

Would have liked to see more of that with all the penalties last night.

On paper. I really want to see it in person. Bresee should be expected tobe a non-factor for a bit of the season as he acclimates.

I think Jaylen Smith as a rusher/Blitzer should be included as well .

A lot of uncertain working parts have to come together and get an identity up.

If Smith and Tanoh can make us 6 deep. I would feel a bit more comfortable.
I think Bresee is gonna produce a lot more than people think. He’s gonna get all the 3tech nickels snaps, and he has the speed and pass rush moves to get after the QB, he’s gonna prove a lot of people wrong.
