Derek Carr world tour thread (updated with combine visits) (2 Viewers)

If he really wanted to be a Jet, he would have signed tonight.
If he doesn’t sign with the Jets tomorrow or Tuesday, then the slight lean is just smoke. Not sure why that info from Carr’s agent/camp was newsworthy for Fowler to report cause it doesn’t really move the needle. I see Rapoport is silent on it and Schefter only retweeted Fowler.

Carr’s brother Darren hasn’t reacted to that recent Jets tweet or many Carr-Jets tweets either if that means anything.

We might be paying $30 million+, but not likely $35+. And I don't think they will stink with Carr behind center. The question is how healthy and available the rest are. I think if they're serious about winning now, they need Carr. If they're more about rebuilding, then you go for a younger QB prospect and slowly build towards that.

I'd rather have Carr, but I can see why some would rather rebuild.
I mean, I get it. I wouldn’t be upset if we signed Carr, he just isn’t my preference (given our limited cap space, and need to build out the roster more than at just one position).

And you're not wrong. There's more than one way to skin the proverbial cat.

Because anything involving the Jets/Giants gets about a million and one retweets.

I don’t think we’re going to be big players in FA, with or without signing Carr. As far as additional splash signings goes. We’ll probably sign an affordable veteran RB and DL, along with retaining our decent FAs, which will all fit into the cap by Loomis. Everything else that’ll build up the roster seems like it will come through the draft and undrafted.

Redoing Michael Thomas’ contract will likely be our (other) biggest FA move.

Him signing with the Jets saves us from ourselves.

I'm not sure what that even means. Can the Saints potentially hit on a QB? Sure. But, the real question is, is the draft pick more likely or not to be better than Carr? Personally, I think not. So, if the question is "who gives the Saints the best chance to win?" I think that's Carr.

If the choice is between being "only pretty good" or "likely not very good", call me crazy, but I'm gonna go with pretty good. How did the draft work for Denver, for example? Have they even had a winning season since Peyton retired? I would take Carr over that any day.

I guess the devil you don't know is always better than the one you do.

It means, for the price he is commanding, you could spread that cash out and secure enough talent to end up in the same spot you would have been in if you shot your load on Carr.

Even if the Saints go with a rookie. They will eventually have to pay him if he works out. A QB is a lot like buying a house. You complain about how expensive it is, but the longer you wait the more expensive it is. Underhill pointed out that if the Saints gave Carr $38 million, after the Burrow and Hurts contracts, that would put him in the middle of the pack, which is about right. QBs aren't cheap.

If the odds were better that a drafted QB would work out better, that's one thing. But, they're not.

I think that sounds smarter on paper, at least. But, I've just never seen it work out anywhere. Maybe SF?

Any QB that can immediately upgrade who we have will command $25-30+ mil for a few seasons. We aren’t looking at a cheap option at QB in the draft or with re-signing Dalton unless we’re forced to.

Settling on a QB at #29 or #40 is like the default plan C/D if we strike out on Carr and Garoppolo, and can’t pull off a wildcard splash trade for Jackson or a top 10 pick. We aren’t resting our chances of winning a weak division on a lowend rookie QB with the team’s current makeup of win now veterans.

I don’t think we’ll ever approach improving QB with a cap-saving mindset until Jordan, Davis, Mathieu, Kamara, and Thomas are all gone when their contracts expire. We’d have to lose enough to get a high top 10 pick to be in range for a top QB, which won’t happen in this beatable division.

Carr just leaves me with a big ol fat meh, it doesn't move the excitement needle one way or another with me. You get him at max for 5 years and pray the wheels don't start falling off by year 3. I would still draft a QB even if we get Carr.
I think Carr is a talented QB and is an outstanding leader. We can't underestimate the intangibles. Do I think he wins games for us? I'd say we would have been plus 2-3 games last year. That would have gotten us to the dance.

I'd be excited to have him in the black and gold. Otherwise another year with Andy (believe it or not it could be much worse) and hopefully we draft and develop a QB of the future.

I don't how I was pulled into this. Didn't Vegas say Sean was going to the Cards? Also, I've never said Carr wasn't an improvement; I don't think he's elite.
He's the most elite QB in this group in free agency this year. Not every team has an elite QB and still have winning records. All we need is for Carr to be a good QB and we will win. Win the division and maybe a playoff game. We just need to keep winning until we can build our team back up to championship form. I believe we can do that with Carr for the next 4 to 5 years or however long of a contract they would sign him to.
