Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore... (1 Viewer)

Very true, yet a lot of those northeast of Baltimore folks use the FSK to travel down to 695 then to Rt. 97 or Rt. 2 to 50 and then on over to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.

The thought is instead of dealing with double the traffic now in Baltimore, the northeast Baltimore folks will just take 95 up to Wilmington and then head down 113. Will it happen? Possibly but who knows. Beach traffic is chaotic any way you slice it......
They really need to do a better job connecting the eastern and western shores. God forbid the Bay bridge got messed up.

Can they add ferries or something like they have in Cape May/Lewes DE?

Ive done that run down 113 to Virginia from Delaware and it's not a bad ride. Would be a horrible ride if everyone and their uncle were all doing it at the same time.

It's funny. I agree with you that we need to have better ways to get across the Chesapeake however, there are a lot of people on this side of the Bay that would love to see the Chesapeake Bay Bridge shut down for good. It's a trip.

The ferry idea has been floated numerous times, mainly from Crisfield to St, Mary's. Always hits a snag for whatever reason. Money is my guess.

Thankfully this Easter weekend, I personally will not have to deal with Baltimore. Headed up 113 and then up to northern Jersey.....

I'd be surprised if they're allowed to comment. The company they work for probably would tell them they can't comment on the accident for a lot of reasons.
True. Unless the company starts to throw them under the boat.

it seems like they replaced the twin spans over Lake Pontchartrain fairly quickly after Katrina...it was obviously different since they were able to piecemeal one of the bridges as a temporary bridge to allow traffic to continue....

still, it was 2 separate bridges at about 6 miles each that went up pretty quickly, from what i remember....

The original Francis Scott Key bridge took 5 years to build.

Estimates have been between months to 4 years for a replacement. The primary factor will be what shape the supports are still in, and if they'd even use them or beef them up. So, a design has to be settled on, and funding. Seems like the Federal Gov't will foot the bill (at least until they file suit with the cargo company), so that should speed things up. US Army Corps of Engineers has been activated. So, we shall see...

I'd set the over under at 2 years.

I'll take the over on that one. The US is fundamentally incapable of completing large projects in any time frame shorter than 5 years.

Wave when you go past exit 7A on NJ Turnpike.....

You bring up a great point.

The summer traffic is banana’s as it is and now, they are going to have to find a new way to get here so Wilmington, Delaware down is going to be a major way to get to the beach. I work in Millsboro, DE and it is a nightmare as it is. 35 miles takes me an hour. Rt. 113 is clogged as it is and the only way to the beaches are single lane roads. So you have thousands and thousands of beach goers coming here and they had three ways to get out of Baltimore. Now, they have two and Delaware is going to be that more congested. Wonderful…….
Yep, you nailed it. I didn't mention it (but Terps sort of did), the West side of the Baltimore Beltway from White Marsh to Glen Burnie is going to be jacked for a while (especially between Towson and White Marsh) because that Eastern loop entrance accessible from the bridge for the people that live in Glen Burnie, Pasadena, Annapolis, etc. is closed off from them so they'll have to go up and down the Western side of the loop.

That's all that section of the beltway needs - more traffic.

False. They rebuilt the I-35 bridge in Minneapolis in a year after it collapsed in 2007.
Mn/DOT announced on September 19, 2007, that Flatiron Constructors and Manson Construction Co. would build the replacement bridge for $234 million.[165] The I-35W Saint Anthony Falls Bridge was opened to the public on September 18, 2008, at 5 a.m.[166] Using the innovative design-build project delivery method, the replacement bridge opened over three months ahead of schedule, and was awarded the "Best Overall Design-Build Project Award" for 2009 from the Design-Build Institute of America.[167]

I crossed bay bridge every few months on a motorcycle in the early 80’s while driving from Norfolk to my parents house in CT. It wasn’t fun then especially n the winter.

Well, I stand corrected. I hope it would be like that and not the clusterfork that was the Big Dig or California High Speed Rail, or the I-95 Springfield interchange in my backyard.

I will be pleasantly surprised if it gets done under 5, In the current political climate, with all the infighting, paralysis and schizophrenia., treehuggers on the left and nutcases on the right.

Do you believe the ship initiated the right turn well before the 13 second mark, or about the 13 second mark?

Also, when do you believe the pilot initiated the hard left turn in the video? Would it be after the power is cut at the 13 second mark?

Obviously the ship made a turn to starboard before the 13 second mark. Let's say they lost helm with a right 20 order, the ship's rate of turn, as in degrees per minute, is only going to increase as the rudder stays 20° to starboard. It's possible the black smoke you see is the main engine firing back up with an astern propulsion order, which would only increase the rate of turn to stbd. A right handed prop will make the stern walk to port in reverse. There does not look to be anything nefarious going on here. Ships blackout all the time.

Also, the ship would be operating on a marine version of diesel. US ports generally have high quality fuel. I kind of doubt it was a fuel quality issue. I've seen a fuel purifier break and spray water straight into the service tanks. The red MDO looked like a strawberry milkshake, but the engine kept running...
