Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore... (1 Viewer)

Steering a 1000 ft ship happens minutes before the action desired. For a ship that size, it could take 40 seconds from rudder stop to rudder stop. Once they lost power it was probably game over. You don't have much of any steering when you order astern propulsion when moving 8 knots ahead and bow thrusters are useless at that speed. This isn't a car man, you have little idea what you are asking.
I’ve steered a 300-foot sailing ship the S/V Fantome (maybe wasn’t supposed to be doing so but oh well). It took 20-30 seconds or so for her to respond to the helm at approximately 8 knots. I believe I was executing a 30-degree course change

On the water things happen slowly, there are no brakes, the accelerator is dicey, and the steering wheel is vague. Then the jib boom bout clocks you in the head…

That’s not what it says. It says the pilot made efforts to stop the ship from swinging right including hard left on the rudder. But without power that’s not a very meaningful measure.

So, pilot made a hard left, after ship had it's power cut, that just so happened to make a hard right, when power returned?

:confused2:

lol

I remember the good old days when you saw those magazines by the checkout at the grocery store, you just knew they were fake and and we all laughed about stuff like Bat Boy and my husband was reincarnated as my parrot stories. Now people post those stories on Twitter and Facebook and the dumbest among us think its true...
I've heard research on this phenomenon.

The cost to produce am actual magazine and reach fringe readers consistently is too expensive. This leads to publications designed for maximum readership.

With the advent of internet sites where you can pump out drivel for clicks that barrier was removed. Add in social media algorithms and bad actors then bingo, you have something profitable and useful idiots for your cause.

Just because the lights came on does not mean they regained steering. The rudder will have two electric HPUs providing hydraulic power to move the rudder. Those will need to be restarted. Nothing comes back quickly when you fully blackout a ship. It took us 12 hours to get everything back online when we purposely killed all power. My vessel is way more complicated than a container ship, though.

Only if BOTH found something other than mud to grab onto but I doubt that happens. Even if it did there was still a chance the chains would rib the windlasses right out. This is looking to be a freak accident or possibly a contaminated fuel issue. (There was a report I heard earlier that a contaminated fuel issue is being looked into). I just don't see there is a pilot or captian mistake at this time.
Mud is good bottom for anchoring. I'm sure the windlass brake and pall would fail long before the windlass was torn from the deck, not to mention the flukes on the anchor. I've seen the flukes get torn off a 15 ton anchor in Singapore. The windlass is still fine on that ship. Trying to drop anchor and put out the proper scope in blackness, in an emergency is a tall order for any crew. I bet they didn't have enough chain out.

Do you believe the ship initiated the right turn well before the 13 second mark, or about the 13 second mark?

Also, when do you believe the pilot initiated the hard left turn in the video? Would it be after the power is cut at the 13 second mark?

Do you have a hypothesis? You seem to be intimidating that you do.

You both seem to speak from experience, and your insights have been helpful. For this I thank you. Your experience matters much more than my 30 minutes at the helm! What do you do for a living, or what have you done in the past?

Then there are others who seem to seek arguments for arguments sake.

No, I really didn't. I commuted all the way to Annapolis every day for almost 8 years, but I hardly went over to your side of things. I'm not a big beach person, so I went over the bridge maybe a couple of times a year.

I'm up in Carroll County so it's about an hour's drive for me to get to the bridge without traffic. 14 hours on a Friday afternoon in the summer. :hihi:

I have a feeling that Ocean City is going to have a tough summer since (I think) the only other ways across are up to near Wilmington DE or all the way down to Norfolk?
You bring up a great point.

The summer traffic is banana’s as it is and now, they are going to have to find a new way to get here so Wilmington, Delaware down is going to be a major way to get to the beach. I work in Millsboro, DE and it is a nightmare as it is. 35 miles takes me an hour. Rt. 113 is clogged as it is and the only way to the beaches are single lane roads. So you have thousands and thousands of beach goers coming here and they had three ways to get out of Baltimore. Now, they have two and Delaware is going to be that more congested. Wonderful…….
