Harry Potter TV Series (5 Viewers)

Driver would be a good choice

the treating of fiction - in particular fantasy - as some mix of historical document and sacred text
Hmm I think there are certain characters that people love or become attached to. The idea of replacing them because of the color of one’s skin gets on people’s nerves. Snape was one of them. He had this redemption story no matter how much you hated him for most of his history. It’s not a racism.

Well they’re replacing everyone
And even if not Alan Rickman is dead, so….

If the chief complaint about the replacement is that the new actor is black while the other was white (which is what the post I referred to did)
It’s hard to arrive at any other conclusion

I believe people will see what they want to see.

He wasn't replaced BECAUSE of the color of his skin. Only racist think like that. He was cast because the showrunners thought he'd be great in the role.

The idea that the only reason this guy got the part is because he's black is inherently racist. They're not going to cast the person who plays Harry Potter with someone that's Jewish because the person's Jewish, they will do so because after auditions he was the best person according to the showrunners. No one is going to say he got the job because he's Jewish. Or substitute American, whatever. It's always skin color for racists.

Again, if someone's objection to the casting of a black person in a fantasy movie is, "it's because they're black", and not "they're not a good actor", it's racist. Only someone that's racist sees the former as a reasonable reason to object to a casting. Call it a racism cloud, but no being able to see WHY it's racist...is part of the problem.

It’s not racist at all. It has everything to do with the description of Snape in the book. The description helps portray Snapes Identity and why he is the way he is.

Call it what you want I suppose I don’t really care. I am not a racist.

. I am not a racist.
Out of curiosity
(And it’s legit an honest question)
As a white guy how do you make this assessment?

tbc I have the same question when a guy claims he’s not sexist or a straight person says they’re not homophobic
What are they using to make that assessment?
Outside of social context, I have similar reservations with a statement like ‘I am not a liar’ - in broad terms I don’t know how to value that statement

I will attempt to answer and I suppose be judged as well. How do I know? My son in law is black and I treat him the same as any of my other children. I look forward to being with him when we do things together etc. when we see each other we hug, kiss on the cheek etc.

I will also add because of my behavior in my youth. I was a racist. I used to say I wasn’t because I wasn’t the kind of person that called names, or things like that but I feel I did judge people unfairly. I recognize that behavior, I have changed that behavior and I did it on my own.

When a friend of mine laughed and started messing with me about 9 years ago because my daughter was dating a black guy I defended them and dropped out of his life when he didn’t want to stop.

I think ultimately it’s because I can look in the mirror and acknowledge I am a different person than I was before.

i appreciate you sharing all of that - and i value what you say
for me 'not racist' is not a destination but a process - in a way like how people talk about marriage being work
a guy declaring "I'm a good husband" seems a bit suspect bc he's only part of the equation - and I would infer that him saying 'i'm a good husband' is actually a bit suspect - him saying "I try to be a good husband" seems a more apt framing

most of the board knows my wife is AA and therefore my kids are - and I would never declare myself 'not racist' and I can't imagine how hard she would roll her eyes (at best) if I ever did say something like that
but I continually run up against (usually small) prejudices here and there that I must acknowledge and need to work on
I don't think i'm bigoted, but I certainly have prejudices

Was introduced to him in the Lazarus Project

UPDATED: Paapa Essiedu is being eyed for the role of Professor Severus Snape in the upcoming “Harry Potter” TV series, Varietyhas confirmed with sources.

According to sources, no deal is currently in place and Essiedu has not formally accepted the role. He is the latest actor to be mentioned for a part in the series. Variety previously reported that Academy Award winner Mark Rylance was in the running for the role of Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore.

Reps for HBO responded to Variety‘s request for comment with the following statement: “We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumor and speculation. As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals.”…….

Adam Driver was right there!!

Adam Driver was right there!!
Hasn't been cast yet, just in the running

We don't know if Driver already told them no

If I remember right it sounded like he didn't really enjoy making the Star Wars sequel trilogy and may not want to be involved with another big budget, CGI laden long term franchise (another beloved franchise with a rabid fanbase at that) commitment
