Ingram benched [OLD THREAD BUMPED] (1 Viewer)

I'd take that in a minute but even Cleveland can't be that dumb!

Don't be so sure...

^This.

I like Ingram and have tried to support him like I would any of our players that I think it part of the big picture of our success. But you can't deny that Ingram looks different this year. He lacks the burst and the violence that I thought made him successful in the past.

Unquestionably, we're no worse with Ingram in a secondary role and it would be hard to argue against moving Hightower to #1. If it causes Ingram to get mad and get that spark back, great. But right now the only thing that matters is what helps us win now. There will be plenty of time to figure the rest out later.

The bigger picture is that Ingram lacks the Bama oline... he was never a 1st rounder. Compare him to zeke or fournette NOW. Trade him.

.

Slight Tangent - tell me again why the Saints let Sproles go!

He's doing an awesome job tonight!

(scoll also said that he made the Pro Bowl the last 2 years...)

.

Before we let him go, his role had diminished to that which Ingram's looking at moving forward...

Something to ponder when just blanket thinking we don't need Ingram. Maybe we can't afford to keep him as a committee back, but this season, he's at the very least depth.

Does anyone think maybe ingram has changed his running style or gained weight? I remember our last playoff appearance you couldn't tell me ingram didn't have elite acceleration. I was never the highest on ingram either, I wonder if there's more to his recent struggles. He looks much slower to me.

3.9 yards per carry on the season for Ingram.

3.9 yards per carry today for Hightower today.

But trade that bum Ingram amirite?

/f2

Hightower had 102 yards rushing against one of the better D's in the NFL. But the most critical - Hightower had zero fumbles on 26 carries. For the second week in a row Ingram had a crucial fumble (this one was returned for TD). I like Mark Ingram, he seems to be a good guy, works hard, doesn't complain, but honestly he just doesn't fit in Payton's Offense.

Ingram now has the reputation as a fumbler. Opposing players will now go for the ball rather than the sure tackle. This should make it easier to break arm tackles but for Ingram (a player without elite speed or power) it's a serious problem. I don't see how he will overcome it here. It might be best for both parties (Ingram, the Saints) to go in different directions this next offseason.

Hightower has had 12 fumbles in his career, Ingram has 8. That's with less carries as well for Hightower.

I saw a few flashes of the elite acceleration at times this season but certainly it hasn't been consistent. Perhaps there is an injury we're unaware of.

I think Ingram bounces back and solidifies his starting position again to the disappointment of many Saints fans. He'll have a great game in a week or two and many will complain that he should have been great all year or minimize his success. Because he was a first rounder, Saints fans have expected an all-pro RB and that he is not BUT he is way more than just average.

I do look forward to Ingram being traded to a more run-oriented team and to an offense that is a better fit for his skill set. The issue with Ingram is not skill but rather compatibility. An argument can be made that at times Payton underutilized Ingram in the passing game or failed in giving it to him more consistently to develop a rhythm as he did with Hightower yesterday. Flame away but my feeling is that over the course of the game Ingram could have had similar success as Hightower yesterday had he been given 26 carries OR touches. It may have looked different but I think there could have been a similar outcome.

The line scheme changed, and there is a new running back's coach. Probably the root issue right now, imho.

You might be right. Ingram is an effective RB. Because we've had more entertaining violent runners who were not picked in the first round or even drafted like Robinson AND Ivory, Ingram is often forgotten about by fans because more is expected of him and some of the things he does well goes unnoticed or is under appreciated. Just take a look at his career highlight and one might be surprised at many of the great plays Ingram has provided us since 2006:

Hightower's running style turned out to be the right stuff for this game. He wore down a tough front 7. I don't know that Ingram could have had the same effect had he stayed in. That said, I think benching him for a game was the right thing to do. He should be worked back into situations after this wake up call. He is not special, but he is serviceable if he is more mindful of ball security.

hopefully ingram will be better because of it later in the season but these games are way to important to have costly fumbles every week.

I love Mark Ingram. It just doesn't seem like he's trying. I'm not there at practice or in the meetings, so I can't say for certain. But something's up. He's got the ability, the talent, etc... He's not running like he wants it. Hightower is.
