Is Rattler your guy next year? (33 Viewers)

I think Carr is our guy next year and that we should look to upgrade the line and skill positions through the draft. I think the other obvious is that we need a new HC who will bring in his OC/DC candidates. We are terrible on both sides of the ball. Injuries/depth offensively, defensively aging roster and talent.

You’re naming guys with first round pedigree. Now name all of the ones drafted in the 5th round or later over the past decade not named Purdy.
So by that logic, if Penix slipped to the 5th round for whatever reason, would he all of a sudden lose his talent? Remember, Rattler was a late first round talent and was once considered a future top pick. Draft position is not always an indicator of ability.

This is the problem. People getting it in their head that Rattler is as good as the 1st round guys.

It’s easy to say just eat it now but we have to come up with another 30 mil in cuts/restructures (63 mil total) somewhere else to do that. Then we have to spend more money signing another QB.
This is when you realize that most people don't realize what true tanking really is. Why would true tanking team have to sign another QBs unless we believe that all we need is a good experienced QB to contend?

A true tank job would be to go with the three cheap QBs we have and expect nothing from any of them. We (fans & franchise) would have to accept going with these low cost contracts and be willing to suffer through another miserably bad season in order to pay off some of the cap debt.

But that is NEVER going to happen. As any GM would do, Mickey will pretend that we really have something special and can actually compete by having signed a few more key players. Neither the fans nor the league will allow for an obvious tanking going into a season. That simply won't sell tickets or improve advertising.

You would go into next year with just Rattler and Haener? If you name anyone else it costs money to sign them. We aren’t tanking.

That's the point. If you're thinking about going into a season with the hopes of being a contender, then you MUST keep Carr or sign someone else with a huge price tag. But if the Saints were really wanting to tank to clear debt, they would not need a high priced QB right now. They would just go with Haener, Rattler, and that kid on the practice squad they picked up from Dallas a few weeks ago. But no team is ever going to go into a season deliberately trying to tank the season simply because they are not allowed to do so.

But NO quarterback that they might sign for next year could possibly flip the script and make the Saints winners in 2025. And Mickey cannot go into the season making it obvious that the Saints are willing to sacrifice a season in order to improve the salary cap issues we have. There will definitely be more 'can kicking'.

I like what I have seen from Rattler. He's got a ways to go, but considering the circumstances, he's played about as well as you could expect and has been far from our biggest issue in the games he's played. These starts and reps that he's getting right now are invaluable. He has virtually everything working against him and is getting very little help from his teammates, but he's battling out there every play and flashing.

I doubt he goes into next season as the starter, as he probably won't quite be ready yet, but I'm encouraged that there is something there to work with for the future. Carr isn't going to be cut, and will almost certainly go into the '25 as the starter. I think Rattler would rather easily beat out any QB we might potentially draft, as I highly doubt we'll use an early round pick on one.

Y'all need to brace yourself for another rough transitional year and just understand it's part of the process. There is simply no quick fix available.

But you can stick his booty on the bench and start with your future QB like Atlanta did with Cousins. May not be look good for the accounting books but it's time to move on from him. Carr is great if you're into fantasy football and need good stats.
I have zero against Carr, he isn’t the future tho. Rip the band aid off and let’s get this party started. We’re in for a couple (at least) very low win seasons so Rattler (he’s terrible) will be perfect to captain that ship.

Accumulate picks, clean the books, hopefullly draft right, get right after a couple of take our medicine seasons.

JMO.

Many people said the same thing about Russel Wilson!.
The Broncos didn’t restructure Russell after year 1 like we did w/ Carr. Monetarily it doesn’t make sense to take a large cap hit to have him play on another team in 2025.

After 2025 we can do it tho. However you can tell their handling of Carr ie not shelving him after the wrist suggest they have every intention of paying him next season.

As long as we don’t restructure him again in the offseason it means we’re preparing for life after him in 2026

You’re one of my favorite posters on here over the years by far, truly, having said that I couldn’t disagree more on Rattler.

Agree that the circumstances haven’t been good at all, for any of em, but Spencer is showing what he’s always shown.

One read rifle arm prone to the occasional big play with tons of turnovers. I just have never seen it with him, and of course hope to be dead wrong.

For those reasons I’d love to see him driving this tank next season. 😊
