Jarvis Landry visiting Saints tomorrow (1 Viewer)

I think Landry’s draft situation should be a lesson we learned for the Saints. 2014 was an absolutely loaded WR class. The Saints traded up to get Brandin Cooks, but the error they made was not taking advantage of that draft class and drafting SJB instead of Landry. I hope this year the Saints won’t be content with just grabbing one WR. Heck…get three of them if all I care. And throw in a TE on top of that. This is a great WR class and value will be found throughout the draft.

Yeah well everyone seems so desperate to draft a lack tackle I think most would convince themselves the "reach" we make to draft one in the first round (e.g. Raimann) is the best left tackle of all time.

Heaven forbid we draft Willis instead.

Show me a thread dedicated to reaching for Raimann. No one wants that, but I can show you a thread dedicated to reaching for Willis.

And if the Saints reach for Raimann or Willis, then I'm going to hope for the best. If to you that means hoping that Willis is the best QB of all time or that Raimann is the best left tackle of all time, then so be it.

Kamara and Hill aren't WRs. What kind of wack arse grasping at straw man argument is that.

Double digit drops isn't reliable hands. That's the point. I know you probably got Purple and gold memories. It isn't what it's been.

Tyreek Hill is most certainly a WR (actually the 2nd highest paid all-time WR in the NFL) ... So are Keenan Allen and Jamar Chase (2 of the best WRs in the NFL actually).... Which you decided not to quote from my post originally.... And Kamara is the biggest receiving threat for the Saints not named Thomas... You sound like a sour patch girl over this, and you are ignoring fact, excluding information, and making things up to backup a whack opinion. Tons of great players have double digit drops every year... many things go into those... Not all of them make 5 pro bowls while on bad teams like Jarvis did, and not all of them have a literal highlight reel that show off his hands like Jarvis does.

Jarvis, after 4 years in the wasteland of Cleveland and a fractured locker room last year, your floor is turning into quicksand. The Saints are there for you with a safety net at $5M per year for 2 years if you want to come home.

Landry would provide a lot of value to the WR room, especially now that it looks like his price has come down. It's been mentioned in this thread and in previous Landry threads that his ideal role in the offense would be the Y (Slot / Lance Moore role). MT with Landry on the field would pretty much own the short/intermediate routes and middle of the field. He also brings leadership and mentorship to the very young WR room which could be paramount since the only veteran presence we have at WR is MT and developing young WRs is proving more important now that ever at the position with the current contracts WRs are getting on their 2nd contract and turmoil some are causing before their 1st contract is up. Signing Landry does not change the fact we still need a true/every down Z (Devery role) to add top end speed to the position.

Looking at the current WRs on the roster, there are 3 would would benefit the most from Landry's mentorship as they could occupy the same position/role on the team going forward.

Kirk Merritt (6' 215lbs)
Kaawan Baker (6'1" 215lbs)
Easop Winston Jr. (6' 192lbs)

All of the WRs above have ST experience in college or in the NFL with Winston getting some return duty experience and Baker getting some kick coverage experience last season. I bring up the ST because Landry made a name for himself at LSU as a freshman running down and destroying returners which brings some attitude to the WR position. He also has returned punts/kicks in the NFL showing a willingness do do whatever it takes to get on the field and benefit the team. Baker played slot in college, but was considered position flexible and articles from last season indicated that he was training outside. They are all similar size or slightly bigger than Landry and all are bigger than Lance Moore who excelled in the slot role. They also are all faster than Landry, Moore or anyone else we've had primarily in that role with Merritt a 4.33 guy, and Baker/Winston both 4.42.

Overall should he sign it would be a positive signing for the team and our young WRs to help develop the current ones and potential drafted WRs which will be needed in the current state of the NFL and WRs.

At the right price, he would add value to the WR room. I don't really want to hold his 2021 season against him considering he was playing with a 1-armed QB. In 2020, he missed time, but still had over 800 yards, 70+ receptions and his normal 70% catch rate. As unproductive his 2021 season was, he only had 2 drops whereas in 2018, his 2nd best season in Cleveland, he had 11.
Still 2 seasons where production appears to be declining. He is a possession receiver and should be paid as such.

I'm not doubting the paid as a possession WR part.

The declining may be overblown. He was ascending in Cleveland from year 1 to 2 and even 3 before missing 2 games, but he still had a 10% higher catch rate from 2019-2020 with 2019 being his best season in Cleveland.

I think he still has some good years left in him, and I think he would do well in our offense, but I hesitate when I imagine what he is probably asking for, and what he would probably accept. I couldn't see us paying him any more than maybe 9-10 mil a year, on a short term deal. I still like the idea of watching the draft to see if London/Williams/Wilson fall to us at 16. Olave would also be a good option.

It seems to me that we may be willing to get another veteran contract, for either Landry or Mathieu. If it was my choice, I prefer Mathieu but I don't think he will come to our price.

It is very important to understand the role Landry will play with us, more of a 3rd down/moving the chain receiver. We don't have that right now, and it won't diminish the need to go for a speedster at the first round.

What signing Landry will allow us, is to use an earlier pick on getting either a compliment running back or a tight end, both positions of need.

But since Landry's contract will be short termed, the need for a similar player will be delayed for a year or two.

Loomis gonna be like : 4 year $50M deal for you Jarvis!

Signing Bonus: $10M
