Jersey Mike's coming to Da Metrys... (3 Viewers)

Wait till you find out what’s actually on a philly cheesesteak.

if what you are trying to say (albeit obtusely) is that a ‘true’ Philly cheesesteak is made with white American cheese- well then, i never claimed to be an expert on the Philly cheesesteak.. ive only had an authentic Philly cheesestaek once , in Philadelphia , circa 30 yrs ago, and couldnt tell you much about it.. but if they make them with white American cheese , then they are misguided .

White American cheese is a thing and you can get it sliced (or whole) at any grocery deli. And the reason cheese is orange is because of food coloring.

I never said it wasnt a thing  … I just think it’s a nasty-tasting thing that is designed to save a buck, and literally isnt even actually cheese.. it’s ‘cheese product’, and as i mentioned earlier, is a mix of chemicals that is designed to resemble the taste of cheese and is cheaper to produce and buy than real cheese .

You're thinking of Kraft singles, and actually white american cheese (particularly from a deli) is generally real cheese unless it explicitly says otherwise.

You may think it's nasty but it's legitimately cheese (and usually preferable, IMO, to the orange crap, which is more likely to be "cheese product" but also not always).

It’s way worse than that.

The most common cheese for a Philly cheesesteak is Cheeze Whiz.

So yea, it being a “cheese product” is kinda the point.

I listened to a podcast on philly cheesesteaks not too long ago, and apparently the better places (read not the tourist spots) have options. I.e. you can get whiz or "regular" cheese (or not), peppers, mushrooms, whatever. So, yes, whiz is common and pretty much always an option, but you can have an "authentic" cheesesteak without it.

Have to say, I'm inclined to try it.

Most "real" cheese steaks are made with cheez whiz. the best I've ever had I ate almost daily during undergrad from a place called Roma's Pizza which at the time delivered to the dorm for less than $5. I prefer it hoagie style with lettuce, tomato, onion and vinegar.
Jersey Mike's is pretty close, but if you've ever eaten real ones, it's like getting a "poboy" served to you on a split-top bun.

There is no substitute for the po-boy on real NOLA french bread....absolutely none...I've lived away for a long time and every time I go back the first thing (either at Kenner or Harbor seafood, which is near my sisters) is a cup of seafood gumbo and a shrimp poboy.....none of the chains or any sandwich shop can compete with that IMO.....same for the muffaletta (though I can make a pretty good one with ciabatta and my own olive salad that is pretty close to CG)....

That said Jersey Mike's is pretty good, not blow your socks off good but better than most....

So of course i had to grab Jersey Mike’s for lunch today.. #26 Chicken Bacon Ranch, hold the cheese… and dontcha know who i happened to see enjoying a Jersey Mike’s sub on this particular day, but Mr Anthony Bourdain himself…..

.. in all seriousness, this guy bore an uncanny resemblance, i just wish i coulda gotten a better shot without being too obvious .. and wouldnt it just be the most 2023 thing ever for Anthony Bourdain to rise from the dead and go to eat at a Jersey Mike’s of all places ?
