My guess is someone said she was being cast as a Silver Surfer like character (Nova) and after a game of telephone it has been reported as her playing Silver Surfer. We don't need to see the Surfer break away from Galactus again, so they will probably introduce him after he is no longer the herald and Nova is. I'll bet both SS and Nova are in the movie.

It just doesn't make any sense to gender swap him especially when she can just play Nova.

They're going to adapt that story where Aunt May became the Herald of Galactus known as "The Golden Oldie.'

To torture it a bit, the restaurant would have to notice that the customer base for their franchise is dying out and the next generation wants something different
Problem is that the transition is slow and filled with pitfalls
Status quo makes sense, but it’s got the shortest timeframe and the greatest chance to wither and die
The ‘compromise’ option is to try to find alternative meat sources but keep most of your recipes- that will ease the transition a bit, but doesn’t have much room to grow
Then there’s ’let’s keep the nostalgia’ but really update the menu - this one is the riskiest but with best chance to grow

But fossil fuels into alternatives might be the better analogy

BUT to answer your rhetorical question- it’s not a matter of who wants it, it’s an acknowledgment that when most of these heroes were developed it was mostly all white, str8 men creating characters from their demographic appealing to a fanbase they assumed was just like them
If the studio wants to use known characters- which makes the most sense- there’s really no reason the fantasy story/characters need to stay rooted in 1960s origins
Making Jane Foster into Thor for a movie doesn’t disenfranchise str8 Nordic men in any way

Why not? Isn't that the "something different" that they want? I bet those fossil fuels are looking pretty good to Marvel/Disney right now.

The customer base was absolutely FEASTING on steak. Yet the restaurant decided to switch to pork and expect the same customers to be happy.

She isn't Thor himself and she did not replace Thor; she is another completely separate character who was imbued with the power of Thor. Kinda/sorta like the whole SS/Nova thing I mentioned. Similar characters, similar purpose, but ultimately different entities entirely, and Nova eventually replaced SS as a herald of Galactus.

Your timeframe argument is a bit weak as well, at least as it is being applied in this specific instance. SS first appeared in 1966; Nova first appeared less than a decade later, in 1975. That was still pretty much smack-dab in the middle of the straight-man demographics timeframe you are referring to. So why not just use her?

Again, who is asking for SS to be a woman? Where is the outcry for him to be cast as such? If it's not coming from the "next generation", then where is this silent outcry coming from? Or is it nonexistent?

Except that a movie is not a restaurant that only serves a small regional clientele. It is a product that will be "served" nationally and worldwide to a number of different types of audiences, in movie theaters and via streaming services, and the overwhelming majority of possible viewers is not going to be comic book nerds...

I don't recall the timing, but I know ScarJo and Disney got in a row over something and she had threatened to leave the company or something, I don't recall the details. Not sure if that was before or after the movie. The pandemic affected the timing of the release date for the movie, but still, I think it was gonna release after EG anyway. But yeah, it was definitely an odd choice. Maybe they weren't planning on a show until it was too late, idk.

Marvel HAD to produce to stay competitive with Netflix and HBO and Amazon and Apple, et al - Marvel had the added context of being one of 2 (maybe 3) tentpoles trying to hold the whole thing up whereas other platforms could spread titles throughout (like I think Amazon took a big swing and missed with Rings of Power but could absorb it a bit more easily)
I'm sure all platforms/streamers went through beaucoup projection analysis that was part of determining which direction to go - problem is all analysis had no idea what the response to and length of covid was going to be and what public consumption was going to be like postC

Everybody likes/wants good living conditions with clean air, everyone is/would be happy with it. Marvel polluted the air for no good reason other than to do it. i think there are myriad reasons. Movie going in mired in a pretty bad slump, and The Marvels got hit by that trend. That said they've been outperformed by a couple of features. That's not good for Marvel.

They marketed the hell out of it, Beastie Boys in the (high energy and funny) trailer, Disney Plus TV tie-ins. Yet there it wallows, at the bottom of the heap.

I dunno, they did market it some, but it wasn't plastered everywhere like Oppenheimer and Barbie in the middle of the summer. Others get the enthusiasm for it because they haven't watched Ms. Marvel or Captain Marvel.
