Nick Underhill: Players organizing a Players-Only Meeting (2 Viewers)

Wound up getting to chat with Mrs. B. after the meeting. Totally unexpected but very pleasant. I feel more encouraged than discouraged. The longer this deathspiral goes the more I find myself getting caught up in the hyperbole, but talking with her gave me some insight into how she likes to operate. She didn't say anything about anyone's fate, and I'm not going to ask for information that isn't given. She did acknowledge she is aware, she hears the fan sentiment and sees the state of the Dome emptying at halftime.

DA talks like a guy who knows he is not getting fired, yet at the same time you could also say he is talking like a guy who knows he is getting fired. The last time the Saints let a coach go mid-season was Rob Ryan, in fact I am pretty sure in the Loomis era, Rob Ryan is the only coach they've ever let go of mid-season?

Also, not a single coach who was a part of the 2009 season, no matter how badly they performed after, was ever let go mid-season.

I would not be shocked at all if they're already looking at Head Coach candidates for 2025 and what it would potentially take to get them here.

Good stuff.

For what its worth, Gayle fired Stan Van Gundy after 1 season because Griff told her it was the right/necessary thing to do. So we know she's not completely allergic to canning someone quickly if its not working. But obviously nobody on the football side is telling her to fire DA just yet. She may get there on her own soon enough.

Or Lauscha will.

Yes he is. He's also an owner. I know he fancies himself a GM, but he's a rare bird. I lot of people choose to retire earlier. We'll see.
Loomis looks healthy and doesn't give any vibe that he is going anywhere anytime soon. He and Ms Benson are in their own rich world. I didn't think they care what the everyday fan thinks. Can't blame them. Just how it is

I think they care and they will certainly care if it starts to hurt ticket sales and game day revenue.

Gayle Benson fought off a car jacker on Carrollton Avenue. She's one of us an everyday New Orleanian. Who among us has not had to fight off a car jacker? (I was shocked but she was driving her own car.)

Idk, just above, a poster talked with her today and that doesn't seem to jive with your comment. And as others have said, she/management have fired coaches before. And clearly she's well aware fans aren't happy right now. Maybe she'd rather just wait til the end of the season because there's no point right now. At least some have made that case.

Fwiw, I'd rather they fire Allen now, but I can understand waiting until late in the season or after the end of the season to do it.

I played ball for a LOT of different coaching types and the idea that a coach HAS to be a hard arse for there to be accountability is completely ridiculous.

It's like y'all never watched Ted Lasso.

Tony Dungy was very similar to Dennis Allen with his temperament. Tom Landry was also known for being stoic on the sidelines, Marv Levy, I could go on, but mostly it makes me sad for y'all youth sports experiences.

You have to be able to connect to your players somehow, someway. There has to be a quality about a coach gets him through to his players; Dennis Allen has zero qualities. The guys just straight up don't play for him.

We'll of course they care then. It effects then directly.

Surprised she drives herself. 👍

I'm sure the truth is somewhere in between. I don't know what the truth is regarding the relationships in the front office. Not firing a friend does not always make good business. I haven't been happy with the business model the saints have taken for quite some time as a fan. But they've been making money all that time so maybe they aren't too concerned about it. We still have our season tickets. So I guess I'm part of the problem. It's just speculation on my part of course.

Personally I get the impression they all know its not working out with DA, but as with Carmichael, they're not going to let him go until the end of the year. People point to Carmichael's "hot streak" to finish last season and they still fired him.

And truthfully if they fire DA now, can we really believe any of the guys on the current staff can get the job done as an interim HC to win 7-8 games (out of 9) and have a chance at the playoffs?

Rizzi's ST unit is making the most baffling decisions on returning kicks. He can't get his kick/punt returners to use their brain, but now he'll get a whole locker room to dial in?

Kubiak's offense has completely fallen apart. Neither he or anyone else on the offensive staff has shown themselves to be worthy of a shot as an interim.

Every level of the defense is getting killed. I trust those coaches to run a team as much as I'd trust Wile E. Coyote with a stick of dynamite.

I can't see this team being sorry enough to lose to Carolina, but if they do, that's the breakpoint. At minimum we'd see scapegoat firings start, things still not improve, followed by DA being let go a week after Black Monday.

I think it will be just like Carmichael. The people in charge know its over, but the personal friendships and respect they have with the coach means we fans will just have to deal with it for the rest of the season.

McCoy doesnt play defense, and our defense is 32nd. As long as 8 wins and no playoffs makes you happy....
I don't think you understand football is complimentary. When one side of the ball completely craps the bed it effects the other side. The offense since the KC game and 75% because of injuries has been virtually non-effective. And due to multiple 3 and outs and INT's and TO's has put an extreme amount of pressure on the D to play pretty much perfect ball.
And it goes the same it the tables are turned.
In 2012 the yr SP was out we had the #2 offense , but we had the #31st defense and what was our record? 7-9

He scrutinized every detail, including seemingly irrelevant things like how the receptionist answered the phone. He wanted excellence to be the culture across the entire organization.
YUP, it is exactly those obsession to detail kind of coaches that make the great ones

Not anymore. She's a woman worth about $6 billion dollars that is at the head of a banking, car dealership, and sports franchise empire.

And Tom Benson was a car salesman, Robert Craft made and sold newspapers and then razor blades, the Heinz family made and sold ketchup, etc. Even Jerry Jones was a Wildcatter. Lots of people have humble beginning. Doesn't mean they can't run a business.

It's not like any of these people run the day to day operations of their teams outside of Jerry Jones and none of them were "football people" when they bought the teams with the possible exception of Jerry Jones. Dennis Lauscha runs the sports franchise businesses and she has other people running the Benson car dealerships and Benson owned banks.
What you do and where you come from does not matter, what DOES matter , and I think Mrs. B is a wonderful compassionate sweet lady, is that you be successful in what you have done in the past. Unfortunately, Mrs. B was not successful in her businesses. And while I do think Dennis Lauscha and ML can turn the team around They have NO fear of losing their jobs because Mrs. B is not going to fire either one of them EVER

Weird how everyone is saying Gayle doesn't care, isn't qualified, blah blah but back when it looked like Rita might end up with the team, everyone was furious and totally supportive of Gayle keeping the team and letting Dennis L. & Mickey L. run the show for the most part. Which is exactly what is happening and now everyone has their pitchforks out saying that she needs to care more, be more involved or the polar opposite and stand down altogether because she 'has no idea what she is doing & unqualified.

It's working as designed and when we were winning, folks were all on board with that structure and now that we are losing; demanding change.
I'm not suggesting that Mickey & Dennis should be let off the hook for anything but this was what the fans asked for.

A good leader doesn't always have to be the subject matter expert in everything. Good leaders know they know they couldn't be and assemble the best possible team around them that helps them see their blind spots and make the right decisions.
THE issue almost everyone has with Rita was that she would either sell the team or move them

Playoffs?! Dont talk about playoffs! You kidding me? Playoffs?! I just hope we can win another game!
