Pros and Cons after the 49ers game. (3 Viewers)

Ok. Lets go. Pros: Our first team defense minus some key starters continue to play well. Orji and Rico Payton had a solid game. Penning improve a lot and hope to continue (very happy about this one), running game was ok.

Cons: WR. WR and WR. Gees we have no one after Shaheed. AT Perry can occasionally gives you a few catches here and there but I see a Brandon Coleman clone there. Add to the insult Shaheed in walking boots. No one stood out in this game. Offensive line throughout is still our weakest link. What's up with Lemieux and his snaps today? He is a veterans for sake. None of our back up quarterbacks are ready. Haener in the lead but still. I am not advocating to sign a veteran. Keep both as back up and hope we don't need them to play this year. CB Wright had a terrible game. Foskey still doesn't stand out.

Meh: Payton Turner had some moments to make a play but he needs to finish. Doesn't seem to play with authority.
Agree with everything except Haener. I give Rattler the edge for backup at this point.

Pros: the Taysom Hill in the Kyle Juszczyk role seems to be a positive. Chase Young looked promising. Cons: This offense needs all the playmakers it can get. The offensive line looks better in a run first to disguise we are going to struggle to pass block against good pass rushers. It looked like most of the top 49er defenders were out (Warner and Bosa?)

We are going to be Dennis Allen's team. Play defense and run the ball. We have to be able to use our backs and tight ends. We are going to have to keep games low scoring and win 24 to 17 or 17 to 14 a lot to have a chance.

I am a big anti foskey guy, but to say he did nothing is crazy, he had 3 pressures and a qb hit.

I actually like Foskey but am frustrated that he hasn't put his talent on the field. I didn't notice those things, but I stopped really focusing on him and the specifics of the game sometime in the 3rd quarter. If he had 3 pressures and a QB hit then that's good news.

Pros
1. Chase Young looked energized.
2. Brian Breese's spin move is incredible.
3. Tasom is going to be used more effectively than he ever has before.
4. TE Kevin Rader can block his butt off.
5. Penning is better but still on skates when he lets people get into his chest.

Cons
1. Fosky looks slow and lacks agility
2. The backup QBs still need a lot of work.
3. I'm not sure I love any of our DTs outside of our starters.

There were a lot of good things out there that I saw last night.
Offense performed a lot better compared to last week, still not getting my hopes all the way up though.
Chase Young seems motivated to get his career back on track.
Penning was solid.
May have found another diamond in Rico Payton

Both backup QBs were not good last night.

So many “ifs” with the Saints (and most other teams).

But Bresee closes the gap to the QB very quickly. He’s going to be a problem. This D-Line doesn’t just tap the QB when they get close. Both Bresee and Young were physical towards the QB.

If Bresee takes that next step in year 2 and if Chase is near 10 sacks then this defense is legit.

I am curious about Cam Jordan on the field though. Father time is undefeated.

Maybe Cam’s waiting for the regular season to turn it on, but if not, I thought Turner looked like a decent option even though he couldn’t finish when he got in the backfield.

That third drive was great, but a major factor is that practically none of the 49ers projected defensive starters played. None of the starting DL or DB's played. One of their projected starting LB's got extended work, but he's a starter at SLB and will likely not see the field too much.

We looked way better than we did last week against backups, so it's a step in the right direction.

Certainly not a finished product, but they did look much better than last week and it looked like they were actually running the Shanahan/Kubiak scheme.

I also notice they they weren't as vanilla as they were the week before which I know you wanted to see less of. You actually saw more of the motion and bootlegs in this game. In fact if some of our better pass catching TEs had been on the field later in the game, there were a few big plays to the TE on the bootleg to be had. The QBs were just a little off or the TE couldn't quite make the grab on a few of those.

But, the biggest thing to me is that we actually saw a functional professional running game and it's been quite awhile since I've seen that with the Saints.

I think an old veteran like Can knows what the real value of his preseason is, and that’s to get a little play and not get hurt.

I think the pros revolve around how it looks like they’re going to use TH and the defense looks stout

Oh and also that there are not 28 new Rattler threads with at least 3 of them nominating him for the hall of fame. (And I do like him. I think carries himself differently. Whether that means he’s a stud or not. I dont k ow. )

It would sure be nice to see a little more offense. But again, it is preseason and who knows what we’ll see when it matters

To be clear, the person starting beside Bresee, is of backup quality. And the actual backups are of a lesser quality. My only concern about the defense.

Cam inside is helping to free up Bresee.

I would agree that they tried to get some work in for their offense. It just makes to much sense to do it. I’m curious whether anyone talked about vanilla play calls after the game (which again translates to me as the excuse that “we weren’t really trying”). The team certainly didn’t bring it up when Carr scored on the opening series last year.

I’m also glad they found some success on the third drive, if Carr and the offense couldn’t score then it would be tough to imagine us looking much better once the real games start.

are you sure? i read that both SF starting safety's played, see below taken from a SF game review website:

"Alas, the Niners’ lack of safety depth had the starters in action early, and Brown made his presence known with a great tackle for loss on the Saints’ second drive"

Not defense, but also this nugget about SF starting RT:
"The 49ers starting right tackle repeatedly lost one-on-one reps on Sunday, even against second and third-string defensive ends".

I think Carr, or someone else, mentioned after the game that they were still somewhat vanilla and didn't run the full offense, but it seemed kind of half hearted.

I do think there is much more to the offense, but they clearly used more motion and bootleg than last week. And they showed at least some of the Taysom Hill packages. I don't really recall much play action, but I wasn't paying a lot of attention to that as I was more focused on the OL as a whole than anything else.

But, I agree that the offense needed that drive to demonstrate to themselves that they could run the offense and score a TD. Going into the season without any success for the first team offense would have been tough on them mentally. Somebody mentioned after the game that it was good to get that drive and that it helped them to know that they can run the offense and that the scheme works.
