Saints re-sign Young and Simoneau [MERGED] (1 Viewer)

Are you seriously comparing Vilma to Simmons?

Talent wise? Is that what you mean? No!

Vilma is a pro-bowl caliber player.....I'm worried that his injury might hamper him so he won't be 100% at the start of the season........in which case Simoneau has an excellent chance winning the starter job! Gary Gibbs seems to reward player who might do a good job in the classroom, but are lousy football players. (see his comment on Bullocks)

Young and Simoneau are good resigning when you think about the grand scheme of things, it doesnt mean that MLB and DT wont be targeted, but somebody has to be the backup, we should of kept this guys when you think about it, there the depth we all want, there just not the starters we want, we are now building, we kept players who may not want as starters but realized they have value, then went after players we want to start for us....smart move, getting rid of players for the sake of gidding ride of them is what fans do.

I can't stand these two moves. Other than Jason David, Simoneau is a close 2nd as far as not pulling his own weight and contributing on Defense. Young is always hurt and has never impressed me.

I've already totally debunked the whole "hes always hurt" bullcrap. Its not true. And if probowl numbers in 2006 don't impress you then who would you of rather signed?

I see alot of griping about signing Young, but none of you have any other options. I guess we should go into the season just short a DT right?

some of you do understand that we need backups on this team also. free agency brings out some of the most misinformed fans out there.

No, I'd rather throw in a rookie or wait and see what other DT gets released. I was hoping we had seen Youngs last season here. I don't see him doing anything special in 08'
You will see too...

You are aware that by signing Young we aren't barred from signing or drafting another DT right?

You need 3-4 DT's to rotate in order to keep your line fresh and a great pass rushing tackle like Young has alot of value. And we also don't get to magically get a rookie DT to "throw in"...we don't draft for need (for good reason) so if a DT isn't BPA in the earlier rounds we might not get one. So then what? Young at the least will provide a great player for the rotation. If things don't work out with the draft you then have him as insurance to play as a fulltime starter. Either way, you need alot of bodies to compete in camp. For all we know Thomas/Clancy could be cut.

gross

too much money for young and simoneau is a sack of trash as a football player

well hell, at least we got vilma (allegedly)

That is pretty harsh on Simoneau, he has been in this league for many years. How much football have you played and how good were you?

Its also against the TOS. Mark you should probably go edit that before you get banned.

I'm not that bothered with re-signing those two, but I am glad to see we re-signed Copper. He's been a pretty solid receiver and has been really good on STs coverage.

I believe both of them are great debt and top notch backups. I just don't believe they are starters, but if they have to come in we know what we've got.

Yes, I'm aware...all I did is tell you what I'd rather the team have done instead. Does that make sense to you? Bottom line is we're better off getting a few FA DT's to throw in the mix then retaining a guy that has never amounted or contributed to much of anything for this team. If you can't see that then you obviously are content with having one of the worst defenses in the league.

Simoneau isn't a starter. Young is a starter on most of the teams in this league. I'm not sure where peoples memories are going about this guy. He was a very good DT until he got hurt last year. He had a great 2006 season for us. And his injury wasn't serious. It was just inflammation and fluid that kept popping up because he couldn't let the knee rest.

I honestly don't get why people think he isn't a starter

What part of 46 tackles and 5.5 sacks in 2006 don't you understand? Those are probowl numbers for a DT. To say he hasn't amounted or contributed much of anything is pattenly false.

And your answer was pointless. You say we should get some FA DT's or people who are cut. Who are those people? Go ahead, name me some FA DT's that are better then Young? Or those that will be cut? Your just saying stuff without having a real plan. We were the 11th ranked Defense in 2006, 5th against the pass. Young was a major reason why. When he got hurt in 2007 and didn't play most of the games our pass rush suffered greatly.

46 tackles off the line of scrimmage in pursuit ??? He's a high motor guy and a LIABILITY against he run. I'd rather two Hollis Thomas with 10 tackles a year than a motor guy who can run down someone 5 yards downfield. In a great defense your tackles alter anything inside to the outside, they collapse the pocket ( NOT PASS RUSHING ) They close the pocket from the inside out and cause QB's to get outside and make mistakes. This isn't Madden football where stats get you in the Pro Bowl. The Jacksonville Jaguars have their entire defense built around two mammoths like this. That is what teams want. Tackle stats at the DT position are meaningless. The best ones don't have the best stats, and I don't have to look it up to know that. The best DT's make their DE's and linebackers shine.

What does 06 have to do with 07? Are you just gonna ride that out and remember Young for 06? Not all DTs have been released yet. After the list is final then I'll list everyone I'd rather have than Young as he's had enough time here. It's time for someone else to come in.
