Saints re-sign Young and Simoneau [MERGED]

Same offseason, different day. Signing a NFL caliber backup DT to a $4 million deal is horrible. Simoneau is horrible at any price. To recap, the Saints have traded for a MLB with a bum knee, over paid for a injured, backup DT. and re-signed the worst MLB in the NFL. Come on guys. Call it like it is. I love the Saints and want to think positive, but these moves are bad unless a miracle happens and Vilma can overcome a serious knee injury.

What if Vilma can't beat Simoneau out of the starting lineup? After all, it happened with Simmons last year!

Right now the smart bet would be that Simoneau is our starter! I bet Mark is LHAO!!

Are you seriously comparing Vilma to Simmons?

Great now Vilma will have to be a backup:9:

That's the very first thing I thought when I saw the thread title.

At back up linebacker we need youth and speed, speed, speed, mostly to improve our special teams. I can see Simoneau as a back up but not a key special team contributer.
I am really pleased to have young back. He has a non stop motor.

The only positive with Simoneau is he knows the scheme and the plays (he's not GOOD at either, he just knows them) and has the "ability" to play all 3 LB positions, so effectively it's 3 backups in 1. I just hope he never has to play in '08.

Talent wise? Is that what you mean? No!

Vilma is a pro-bowl caliber player.....I'm worried that his injury might hamper him so he won't be 100% at the start of the season........in which case Simoneau has an excellent chance winning the starter job! Gary Gibbs seems to reward player who might do a good job in the classroom, but are lousy football players. (see his comment on Bullocks)

Young and Simoneau are good resigning when you think about the grand scheme of things, it doesnt mean that MLB and DT wont be targeted, but somebody has to be the backup, we should of kept this guys when you think about it, there the depth we all want, there just not the starters we want, we are now building, we kept players who may not want as starters but realized they have value, then went after players we want to start for us....smart move, getting rid of players for the sake of gidding ride of them is what fans do.

I can't stand these two moves. Other than Jason David, Simoneau is a close 2nd as far as not pulling his own weight and contributing on Defense. Young is always hurt and has never impressed me.

I've already totally debunked the whole "hes always hurt" bullcrap. Its not true. And if probowl numbers in 2006 don't impress you then who would you of rather signed?

I see alot of griping about signing Young, but none of you have any other options. I guess we should go into the season just short a DT right?

some of you do understand that we need backups on this team also. free agency brings out some of the most misinformed fans out there.

No, I'd rather throw in a rookie or wait and see what other DT gets released. I was hoping we had seen Youngs last season here. I don't see him doing anything special in 08'
You will see too...

You are aware that by signing Young we aren't barred from signing or drafting another DT right?

You need 3-4 DT's to rotate in order to keep your line fresh and a great pass rushing tackle like Young has alot of value. And we also don't get to magically get a rookie DT to "throw in"...we don't draft for need (for good reason) so if a DT isn't BPA in the earlier rounds we might not get one. So then what? Young at the least will provide a great player for the rotation. If things don't work out with the draft you then have him as insurance to play as a fulltime starter. Either way, you need alot of bodies to compete in camp. For all we know Thomas/Clancy could be cut.

gross

too much money for young and simoneau is a sack of trash as a football player

well hell, at least we got vilma (allegedly)

That is pretty harsh on Simoneau, he has been in this league for many years. How much football have you played and how good were you?

Its also against the TOS. Mark you should probably go edit that before you get banned.

I'm not that bothered with re-signing those two, but I am glad to see we re-signed Copper. He's been a pretty solid receiver and has been really good on STs coverage.

I believe both of them are great debt and top notch backups. I just don't believe they are starters, but if they have to come in we know what we've got.
