Saints re-sign Young and Simoneau [MERGED] (2 Viewers)

Young is always hurt and old. Why are we paying him 4 million a year?

Because 4 million a year in a 120 mil salary cap is 3.3% of the entire alotted cap, and if you divide 120 by 53 = 2.26 million per year per player ( think of people like copper who make half that, and kickers, punters, etc.) 4 million a year is cheap for a starting DT.

some of these posters apparently do not watch saints games. Young has played very well, is seldom injured and not old. it's a bargain and still allows us to upgrade the DL without breaking the bank...also, why not sign simoneau a a backup? we do need backups, and having one with losts of starting experience at a cheap price is a plus....oh well...

Hes 30 years old and only missed one game 04-06. Last year he had a minor knee problem that was never able to heal correctly. It'll be a non issue after a full offseason.

Seriously, do any of you even watch Saints football? The guy had probowl numbers in 2006. Who else would you like to sign? Seriously....give me some names.

And 4 million a year for a starting DT is chump change.

He has a great heart, but I don't see him as an every down option. If our line returns as is, which I doubt I point to this move as the same problem we had last off season with the LBs. Because it wasn't a glaring problem last off season, management thought we could get away with minimal additions. Clearly an overhaul (minus Fugita) was in order via Free agency and the draft. I didn't happen. I think it would be a huge disservice to look past the issues on the DL interior.

Young is decent on passing downs and mediocre on runs. He's a year older as is Thomas. The age of our line has to be addressed. I guess will take aim at that during the draft, but we can't wait until the seventh.

There are very few everydown DT's in this league. You have to have a solid rotation. Signing Young, even as a 2 down DT was a great move. We will add more pieces through the draft, and we also have Thomas and Clancy under contract to rotate also.

Well, if he beats out someone for their position, most likely Scott Shanle, than I don't see how you would complain. If he wins the training camp battle at WLB, do you still bench him because people don't like him?:dunno:

Exactly! I would love for the Saints to sign and bring as many bodies to camp as they can fit in the dorms! If they make the team, then they're the best player available.. if they don't, the contract is null and void. The Saints pay nothing except for any signing bonus. Sign 'em all!

Same offseason, different day. Signing a NFL caliber backup DT to a $4 million deal is horrible. Simoneau is horrible at any price. To recap, the Saints have traded for a MLB with a bum knee, over paid for a injured, backup DT. and re-signed the worst MLB in the NFL. Come on guys. Call it like it is. I love the Saints and want to think positive, but these moves are bad unless a miracle happens and Vilma can overcome a serious knee injury.

What the hell would you have them do then? Oh I know "sign Briggs/sign Samuel". Yeah, just snap your fingers guys.

I can't stand these two moves. Other than Jason David, Simoneau is a close 2nd as far as not pulling his own weight and contributing on Defense. Young is always hurt and has never impressed me.

Sim is a waste of time but he could just compete with Simmons and Shanle for a starting spot at WLB with whoever else we bring in.

The Young deal makes a lot of since we do not knoe who will be available in the draft and no FA is really hands downa huge upgrade IMO.

Nice. I wanted Simoneau GONE before FA started, but it makes sense to keep him now that we have gotten Jonathan Vilma. He can back up all three LB positions, and may even be able to challenge Shanle for the WLB spot.

Also, this could mean that Brian Simmons will be released. His $3.1 million salary is too much for a 3rd stringer, at least IMO.

Yeah I wanted him gone to, but thats because I didnt want him starting for us anymore, but with the inpending trade for Vilma, #53 will be backing him up and will be insurance incase he isnt ready to start, its a good move because we got someone who can stabilize the MLB spot and now have even better depth because we resigned Simoneau instead having Mitchell as the backup...great depth, that and the Young resigning...dont mean we wont go after a starter at his spot, but its good depth and provides a good rotation....now we just gotta find the guy who will start for us...or does that 3yr 12mill deal mean he is a starter?

What if Vilma can't beat Simoneau out of the starting lineup? After all, it happened with Simmons last year!

Right now the smart bet would be that Simoneau is our starter! I bet Mark is LHAO!!

Are you seriously comparing Vilma to Simmons?

Great now Vilma will have to be a backup:9:

That's the very first thing I thought when I saw the thread title.

At back up linebacker we need youth and speed, speed, speed, mostly to improve our special teams. I can see Simoneau as a back up but not a key special team contributer.
I am really pleased to have young back. He has a non stop motor.

The only positive with Simoneau is he knows the scheme and the plays (he's not GOOD at either, he just knows them) and has the "ability" to play all 3 LB positions, so effectively it's 3 backups in 1. I just hope he never has to play in '08.
