Match Up Spencer Rattler named starting QB ; Jay Glazer reports Rattler expected to start next 3-4 games (month) until Carr’s return (3 Viewers)

I am a terrible judged of talent - especially when it comes to NFL QBs.

I remember when people were going gaga over Pat Mahomes and I was like “he’s just another one of those college QBs who has goofy stats because he plays for a team that throws 60 times a game”. Even when LSU played Texas Tech in the Cotton Bowl, I failed to see an NFL star in the making.

Same with Lamar Jackson. I couldn’t see what everyone else was seeing with him.

So, having admitted my putrid eye for talent - I’m curious what all the people so pumped about Rattler see in him that makes them feel like he’s a star in the making?

I want to understand why he’s different than all the other college QBs who put up good numbers and are little more than footnotes in the league.

I want to understand what makes him more than a, say, Desmond Ridder type player?

I want to be able to understand why everyone is so jazzed that our starter is injured (not the injury itself but the opportunity it presents for Rattler).

I want to see beyond my clearly poor eye for talent.

Enlighten me, friends!
I feel you. Have the same Problem with a lot of guys. The last one was Matt Corral. I really thought that he'll be something special. But heart alone isn't enough in the NFL - so I get that meanwhile.

I also wasn't really pumped when we selected Rattler in the draft. But this was because of his behavior at QB1, which was everything I really noticed about him. I call myself somewhat of an SEC fan, but no team in particular. Maybe the Gators, but that's mainly because of a few Florida vacations and two games I saw in Gainesville. So I saw some Gamecocks games from time to time (isn't that easy to follow College Football in Austria - believe me) but it was like the TV was on, but "I'm anywhere in the house but in front of the TV" type of things.

But after the draft I did some research, like many here I think. And I thought: "Okay, that's value in the 5th". He had a horrendous O-Line at SC, he played some sort of a pro style offense, he has a tremendous arm, he has heart, leadership and isn't afraid to take hits. Then he played the preseason and you clearly saw, that there is a spark going through the entire team. I know .. he faced 2nd and 3rd stringers, but he also played with our 2nd and 3rd stringers. He made that offense roll. And you saw the difference in the team when he took the field and when Heaner was out there. It was different.

I'm the last one who thinks that Rattler goes out there and made this team look like contenders. There will be growing pains, there will be some really bad reads and throws and he will make Rookie mistakes, but I do think that he can develop in a CJ Stroud type of Player.

On the other side, there was my Corall thing … so what do I know. So, as I said, I feel you. But let's hope the best.

Got a quick question please and did not want to start a thread
Got 4 tickets to the game and they came through on my phone today
Can l use just my phone for the four of us please?

Yes, all tickets are digital now.

Taysom Hill was the third string QB in 2020 when Brees got hurt against the 49ers. Winston came in to replace Brees, then Winston backed up Hill who was named the starter for the four games Brees missed.

A huge amount of this comes down to preparation and style. Haener is very similar to Carr in style so an offense built to Carr's strengths can best transition to Haener in an mid-game emergency.

Rattler is capable of being much more mobile than Carr and Haener and things like designed QB runs suddenly enter the playbook.
If healthy, I would think TH7 takes over midgame if something happens to Rattler.

Bad OLine. Rookie QB. Buc defense that gets after it. 16-35. 1 TD. 2 Int. 1 Fumble loss. Bucs 34 Saints 19. First thing that came to my head.
If we have zero turnovers, we win. With this O line, no Taysom and a rookie QB, your prediction might come true. But if we scheme for ball control and the defense forces a few breaks, we can win.

He is a QB with a very unique path to get to where he is today. One that does require a bit of nuance in attempting to evaluate him. He was a massively hyped QB prospect going from high school to college. He had a great freshman season with Oklahoma displaying top level arm talent and ability to improvise and create something out of nothing with his mobility. He had arguably the most hyped up QB out of high school in the past 20 years (at the time) sign at Oklahoma in Caleb Williams following Rattler's great Freshman season. This led to a bit of a toxic situation at Oklahoma.

Rattler transferred to South Carolina which honestly was not the best decision for him to find success (looking at guys in the same draft class like Penix and Nix who transferred to much more friendly offensive systems to showcase their ability). They had arguably one of the worst offensive line situations in college football last season having to start several true freshman due to a multitude of injuries across the OL. While playing one of the toughest schedules in college football last year.

Rattler was under constant pressure and there were several games where you couldn't even get a decent evaluation on him last year because of this. Rattler showed his talent quite often while at South Carolina the toughest part was trying to decipher his decision making. He made more "poor decisions" than you'd like to see out of a top tier QB prospect, but trying to decipher how many of those were due to the constant pressure he was facing because of his OL situation and the need to make plays to keep his team in the game make that aspect of his game really hard to evaluate.

I thought the Senior Bowl was huge for him. It finally gave him a chance to show what he could do when in an equal setting with some of his peers in this draft class. Guys like Penix and Nix were also at the Senior Bowl this year. By most accounts and from what I saw in watching the Senior Bowl footage that was available, Rattler looked the best out of those 3 during the week of practice and during the game. Rattler even won Senior Bowl MVP. Fast forward to preseason and he continued to impress and make some real nice throws while showing his ability to improvise and for the most part kept the offense moving and came away with points on many of his drives.

Some examples of impressive "wow" plays that have people like myself so excited about him:

One of the things that stands out to me is his spacing and footwork. He seems to have a knack for buying time by seeing where on the field he'll have the most time to throw. He's slippery and his release is really quick so he can wait til a guy is almost in his face and still put the ball where the WR can catch it. While it's CFB, those characteristics he shows are going to be really important in the pros. His arm is unquestionably elite.

The rest, we'll have to wait and see how he does.
If healthy, I would think TH7 takes over midgame if something happens to Rattler.
Really depends on who the designated QB2 is, which most likely is Haener. Hill, even if 100% wouldn't be designated QB2 in this situation.

SR has one thing , one thing over JH, arm strength, not arm talent just strength. My guess the reason why we're starting SR is he's used to running for his life, more so than JH
This is simply not true.

Haener is not an overly accurate QB for someone whose arm strength isn’t great. If you’re going to be undersized at that position (Haener is barely 200 pounds), you better have some incredible gift that overcomes it. Rattler has that kind of arm talent. Haener does not.

Rattler has also shown a better ability to navigate a pocket when he’s under pressure, and get out and make big plays on the move.

I hope Carr never plays for us again... in that Rattler is IT and we are good for the long run with him!
That would be the ideal scenario, right? Once given the opportunity, he takes the job and makes it impossible to sit him, and then the Saints figure out what to do with Carr in the offseason. That's honestly what I'm hoping for, that this kid is the next big thing.

The opposite would be that, with the injuries on the line too much is asked of him and he struggles to the point that it's an easy decision to go back to a healthy Carr, at best stunting his development, at worst exposing why he lasted until the 5th round.

But I'm kind of bracing myself for something in between -- flashes of talent mixed with the pitfalls of inexperience, so that there's no clear answer what to do when Carr is healthy -- that would be on brand for the Dennis Allen Saints.

This is what his ceiling looks like... Remind you of anyone?

Plays like Brett Favre to me

edit: It got me looking at Favre's 1st NFL start and his first series reminds me of what we saw w/ Rattler vs Titans. A spit ton of drops in fact his 1st series was.

1st down - reverse negative yardage
2nd down - PA, incomplete
3rd down - Incomlete
4th down Punt

Going to finish watching but drops for whatever reason showed up on Rattlers scouting report as well, still think it's because his ball location can be off despite typically being accurate but we'll find out more on Sunday. I'm form the school of "if it touches your hands, it should be a catch"
