That first round pick we gave the Eagles (1 Viewer)

Ruiz has arguably been our second best player on the OL. He’s shown clear improvement. Turner is on game 8? Finally healthy? How are they misses?

Marcus Davenport has been one of our best defenders.

And hired Dennis Allen? The guy responsible for our solid to elite defense? His head coach tenure is 4 games in. Even Belichick needed time at his second HC gig to find his pace.

You’re on some nonsense.
Turner is a 1st round pick that is in his second year that was a healthy inactive vs Carolina …. LoL.
That’s a miss in the NFL.
As I said last year , last seasons injury status w him is subject to reading between the lines.

Seriously y’all give this a rest. It’s not like we got nothing out the deal. We did get a very promising young player.
If we wanted Olave that badly I imagine we could have moved up from 18 to 11. Didn’t need a brand new first and lose next years.

This is why I hate when we’re losing. All last season, most of the board was killing the front office for not getting top WR help to complement MT.

Before the draft, folks were praying DA would pick one of the top WR in the class. When we took Olave, Saints Twitter and many on this board applauded DA and the front office for pulling a Rams type of move—forgoing future draft picks to land the piece you want today. People also praised the front office for snatching up Tyrann and Juice. They lauded Dennis for being willing to being in home grown talent, while dragging Sean b/c they believe he had gotten too complacent and cute. That Payton just wanted to win w/bargain basement talent and his own genius play calling. But DA was different and willing to lay it all out on the line.

Now fast forward to today and suddenly the Front Office is a liability. They were nuts to sign an old Honey Badger and spot player like Jarvis. And they were equally insane to give up our #1 for a…checks notes…possible Rookie Of The Year WR. The recency bias in this fandom never fails to amaze me.
This!!!

FINALLY someone gets it!!!

We shot our shot and just because it looks bad now doesn’t mean it won’t get better.

People fail to realize that we played this game without our starting quarterback, starting running back, starting wide receiver, starting guard. What more do you people want? I’m sure the result of the game would’ve been different if Jameis had played, AK had played, Michael Thomas had played while cousins, Dalvin Cook and Justin Jefferson were all out.

All of that is still TBD. 4 games into a 17 game season, Olave is offensive rookie of the month, Penning is injured but looks like a solid player when healthy, we don't look like a playoff team, yet with that mess of a game today, still nearly managed to win against a solid Vikings team. Winston hasn't looked the part, but he's on a 2 year contract and we could unload him after the season if he doesn't pan out. I wanted to draft a qb last draft but other than Pickett there wasn't a whole lot to look at there.

I get fans are emotional right now, but I'm not giving up on the season yet. If we haven't righted the ship by week 8, I'll be a lot more concerned.
That’s my point. Olave is playing like an OPOY and I am still not sure that the trade was worth it. That tells you the odds that were against us in that trade

That's because everyone and my mama was screaming we needed more help on the offensive side of the ball at the WR and OL positions, and we got that. The consequences of a draft won't become completely clear or worth grading in the first year or two. Some take longer. We're 4 games in of 17. Let's give these guys a season of two to see whether the moves were good or not. People have zero patience these days. Meh.

The wildcard is Penning imo. If he becomes the solid player we hope he'll be, then I think it's worth it. Olave was well worth picking where he was at. I don't know if the trade was worth it from strictly a numbers standpoint, and I've seen some numbers both for/against, depending on what metrics you use.

I think not pulling the trigger when they did would have left us without an answer at WR. The question is whether we should have forgone a season and just gone full rebuild mode, but you know the front office would have been raked over the coals for doing that too.

I was happy with the Olave and Penning picks. I've been disappointed with Winston’s play, but I'm not giving up on this season just yet. The way the defense is playing, we should be in most games late.

Ho yeah ? who's the second ? Penning ?Who's injured (maybe not even that great) and wasn't part of the trade ?
We don't know if he'll be great or not. Ruiz is finally starting to play like we thought he could. Sometimes it takes 2-3 years for a lineman to really become a solid player. Penning might take that long, but hopefully not. And while not technically part of the trade, he was part of the overall plan for sure.

I’m not sure that you understand that no one knows if it’s even going to be a top 5 pick. Your question was “WTH care what the pick is?” And I was answering your question as to why people might care.

The point is that it doesn't matter. It's in thr past and it can't be changed. The FO isn't worried about that pick anymore because they got the player they wanted when they traded it.

How Penning turns out is largely irrelevant to whether the trade with Philadelphia was a good one when made or should be considered a good one going forward.

In the trade, we received from Philadelphia picks 16 and 16 and a sixth-round pick, and we gave up pick 18, a third-round pick and a sixth-round pick in 2022; a first-round pick in 2023; and a second-round-pick in 2024. There is little difference in value between 18 and 19, and hardly any difference in value between six-round and seventh-round. We essentially gave up for pick 16 a first in 2023 (again, in a draft that is supposed to be quarterback-rich), a second in 2024, and a third in 2022. And let's say there is a difference in value between pick 18 and 19, then we gave up a one in 2023, a two in 2024 and still additional draft compensation less than a three for pick 16. That's serious compensation for a team that needs a future quarterback and still has salary-cap challenges going forward.

Our compensation to Washington to move up from 16 to 11 to pick Olave was very reasonable--for 11, we gave up 16, a late three, and a late four. But these picks do add up. We could have moved up from 18 to 11 to pick Olave by offering Washington 18 and something a tad higher than our late three and a late four. In effect, we gave up a 2023 one and 2024 two plus more for pick 19, which we used to pick Penning. Even if Penning turns out to be a really good player, that is far too much compensation. A Mercedes E class is a really nice car, but it is not value at $90,000.

And a reason we keep trading up and giving away draft picks is that we have every year so few draft picks because of what we have traded away.
